HP integrates VMware API, offers PC backup service
HP today announced it has qualified its entry-level P2000 disk storage array with VMware's API for Array Integration, which will reduce some virtual server administration tasks time as much as 70 percent and reduce CPU utilization. The HP P2000 G3 Modular Smart Array (MSA) is among the first entry-level storage arrays in the market to support (VAAI), HP said. It also supports HP Insight Control Storage Module Manager for VMware vCenter, enabling small and medium-size businesses to simplify storage management and increase performance.

Update: Police arrest teen from Lulz Security for DDOS attack
U.K. police arrested a 19-year-old on Monday for allegedly attacking a police website earlier in the day, in what is the first arrest connected with the rogue hacking group Lulz Security. The Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) said the teenager was detained following an investigation into network intrusions and distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against "a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group."

Tilera takes aim at Intel and AMD with 100-core chip
Tilera on Tuesday announced a new general-purpose CPU with 100 processing cores, which the company hopes will provide headway into a server market dominated by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. The low-power 100-core TileGX-3100 chip was co-developed with "leading cloud companies" with the aim of installing it in servers that run database applications and handle large volumes of Internet transactions, the company said. A Tilera spokeswoman declined to name the cloud companies that helped co-develop the chip, saying announcements would be made over time.

Online storage service Dropbox accidentally turned off password authentication for its 25 million users for four hours on Monday -- although "much less than 1 percent" of those accounts were accessed during the period, the company said. PlanetLab creates a more advanced Unix sudo tool
Researchers at the PlanetLab global research network have developed a potential replacement for the widely used Unix sudo tool, called Vsys, that will offer administrators far greater control over what end users can and can't access. "Vsys is a tool for restricting access to privileged operations," said Princeton University's PlanetLab researcher Sapan Bhatia, who introduced the technology at the Usenix conference held last week in Portland, Oregon.
