iPad 2 Smart Cover Evidently Not So Smart, Fresh, Clean
The much hailed, aesthetically pleasing Smart Cover for the iPad 2 doesn't seem to be working as Apple would have you believe. Sascha Pallenberg of Netbook News was very displeased to find that the cover kept his iPad 2 neither clean nor protected after having purchased one at the recent SXSW Interactive event. He had been originally very enamored with the idea and with Apples' pervasive marketing campaign advertising the beauty and simplicity of the cover:

Apple announced the case with almost as much fanfare as it's vessel as the iPad 2 launch, and many have noted that it seemed like the event was tailored more to the various apps and accessories that the iPad 2 was bringing with it, including the HDMI-out cable, the new versions of iMovie and Garageband, and of course the array of Smart Covers specifically designed for the iPad 2.
Apple's website is suspiciously vague on the subject of protection, touting the case's magnetic features as well as its folding capabilities. Netbook News's Sascha Pallenberg was very, very blunt in his analysis of the case, saying
It is a piece of crap.

In the video, Pallenberg complains that the material is very susceptible to outside dirt, noting that he had only carried the iPad 2 around in his bag at the SXSW Interactive Tech show, not "throwing it around" or anything. The video clearly shows lots of dirt and smudges on the outside of the case, but even worse is the evidence of dirt on the inside. A cover is not much of a cover if its inside facing is dirty. Despite the scratch-resistant high quality glass that the iPad 2 is sporting, no one wants their brand new post-pc device to look like this after a few days of use:

iPad 2 Smart Cover Evidently Not So Smart, Fresh, Clean

Though smudgy touch screens are common after continued use, what's really disheartening are the clearly visible smudge-stripes from the indentations of the folds in the covers. Pallenberg was quite vocal regarding his feeling for the cover, saying in the video:
This Smart Cover is, ah, I tell you what: It's smart for Apple to sell a piece of crap like this, because this should be goddamn cheap. I guess they're gonna, they're gonna make it for like 39 cents in China.

The latter half is a stab at the asking price for the "smart" cover, a whopping $39 for something that evidently doesn't behave that intelligently, especially not concerning tech hygiene. Full video below:

AMD blames DirectX for lack of amazing PC graphics, refers to it as "getting in the way" otherwise known as rooster blocking
This is something I've complained about for years but it seems the big players are only just realising this. It won't stop though as I'm sure AMD are bending over backwards trying to get contracts for next-generation console GPU/APU - yet, wonder why PC gaming is suffering... on with the story! AMD's worldwide developer relations manager, Richard Huddy blames Microsoft and more precisely, DirectX for the lack of great looking games on PC.

AMD blames DirectX for lack of amazing PC graphics, refers to it as

It's funny, we often have at least ten times as much horsepower as an Xbox 360 or a PS3 in a high-end graphics card, yet it's very clear that the games don't look ten times as good. To a significant extent, that's because, one way or another, for good reasons and bad - mostly good, DirectX is getting in the way.

Huddy sounds like he's pissed off and rightly so. There is so much more horsepower in a single mid-range GPU when compared to current-gen consoles yet the graphics we receive on PC is barely any better. Should this mean we should pay less for our games? PC's get higher resolutions, AA/AF options, but at the end of the day we're simply not seeing the leaps and bounds we used to in the 90s when the PC was the lead innovation for gaming.
Another quote from Huddy:
I certainly hear this in my conversations with games developers, and I guess it was actually the primary appeal of Larrabee to developers - not the hardware, which was hot and slow and unimpressive, but the software - being able to have total control over the machine, which is what the very best games developers want. By giving you access to the hardware at the very low level, you give games developers a chance to innovate, and that's going to put pressure on Microsoft - no doubt at all. Wrapping it up in a software layer gives you safety and security but it unfortunately tends to rob you of quite a lot of the performance, and most importantly it robs you of the opportunity to innovate.

ICANN approves XXX Domain: Does This Change Anything?

ICANN approves XXX Domain: Does This Change Anything?

After years of discussion and appeal, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has finally approved the ".xxx" domain suffix for adult entertainment sites. Though it won't be for some time until the 281st domain suffix becomes applicable, the approval has generated quite the controversy nevertheless.
After browsing close to 100 articles on the subject and standing on the sidelines of the numerous anonymous comment wars of tech blogs, the only thing I could glean, for certain, is that the real beneficiary of the dot-XXX suffix would be the company that originally proposed it: ICM Registry. The Florida-based company initiated the process back in 2005, only to be inundated by protests and threats from religious groups and the Bush Administration, who even threatened to enact legislation to override ICANN if it ever approved the TLD suffix. The Obama administration doesn't seem to care, and I'm not entirely surprised.
Red Light Districts exist, whether by name or by principle, in almost ever major city. If you live in a metropolitan area, you're generally aware of those neighborhoods that contain Sex Shops, Adult Bookstores, Exotic Dancing (and in some cases, more lascivious services). Imagine if someone came to your city and built a warehouse that spanned twenty or so square blocks and named it, I don't know, something like The "ALL PORN IN THE HISTORY OF EXISTENCE IS LOCATED HERE, IN THIS WAREHOUSE. SERIOUSLY, ANY PORN YOU WOULD WANT OR COULD FIND OR HAVE EVEN DREAMED OF ONCE WHILE YOU WERE AT WORK OR IN TRAFFIC IS PROBABLY HERE WAITING FOR YOU TO DISCOVER IT" Building. And they wrote that on the top of the building, which you can conveniently see from space.
There would be no inherent reason for any of your local sin-shops to relocate to this building. But with that kind of advertising, why wouldn't they?
Cyberspatial architecture often deliciously evades physical comparisons to our reality, but this is pretty close. There's a very interesting Orobosian process at work here: Porn sites have no obligation to register for these domain names, but now the entire world believes that the ".XXX" is an ontological content determiner rather than a few letter after a period to which ICM Registry has attached a semantic signifier.

ICANN approves XXX Domain: Does This Change Anything?

For the layman: "There's porn there because we say there's porn there, even though there's no porn there. Yet."
Further proof that the optimistic sensibilities of "Field of Dreams" is not entirely dead: "If you build it, they will come."
Back in the day, the idea(l) was that all commercial sites would have ".com", all non-profits would use '.org", etc. But these days, dot-orgs and dot-nets are more likely to be sites whose dot-coms were already taken, or held at such a high cost that your average internet user trying to start (MyName).com blog wouldn't want to fork over the dough. So you get (Myname).biz, .net., etc. Yet we continue to perceive these suffixes as indications of content, even though that ship clearly sailed with the "whitehouse.com / whitehouse.gov" (ongoing) debacle.
ICM has exclusive control over this TLD, so everyone that wants to register a dot-XXX must pay them, which is pretty much every porn site that wants to benefit from that kind of traffic. But the shining (and most likely economically motivated) idealism from ICM about creating a domain suffix where internet denizens can enjoy fraud-free, malware-free, child abuse/molestation-free content doesn't much change the current cyberspatial pornographic ecosystem: All of the ".com" porn sites are going to remain on those domains as well. This is not so much a replacement as it is an addition to an already porn-riddled web. It won't make filtering any easier for parents or IT- they'll just have to add another filter input.
As far as keeping children safe from being corrupted- let's be honest here people. Americans are probably the only ones worried that children will be corrupted by sex, yet MTV these days has less and less M and more and more T ( and A)- and is available on basic cable. Also, there are already probably millions of porn and sex sites out there on the dot-coms, easily accessible. How many children, by the time they get to the age where they might be searching for pornography, know less about their computers than their parents? How many children don't know how to put in the billing information for a credit card?
How does a dot-XXX suffix legitimize the sex industry any more than what's currently in place? God forbid, religious groups, that you even own a computer connected to the web, lest your children discover 4Chan.
And first-amendment activists, no one is forcing these sites to relocate- they're still going to have access to all of their original domain names. Porn sites, I know you're worried about dictatorships and conservative administrations being able to singlehandedly shut all of you down in their respective nations. It's a valid concern, but you could, I don't know, keep your existing domain names? Organize an industry-wide coalition, consortium, or boycott of the dot-XXX sufix? Keep making porn?
All that has really changed is that Porn sites now have the "option" to buy into a domain suffix that would be moderated by a single entity, thereby allowing them to offer to their clients a virus-free, "clean" website. But how long is it going to be before someone figures out how to troll ICM's suffix for user data, credit card information and the like? In fact, wouldn't having all of those sites in that giant internet warehouse increase the pot just a bit? Also, if a prostitute were to show you a note from her doctor pronouncing her clean of STD's, does that remove your fear of contracting one?
ICANN is evidently on its way to approving the submittal process for any and all suffixes (pending certain guidelines). Even if this leads to the internet becoming a sea of arbitrary suffixes, relevant content wouldn't be that hard to find considering that every browser comes with a search bar, if not the ability to search within the address field. Search is already an integral part of our internet experience- the existence of a few (million) more domain suffixes isn't going to change that.

Super Flower Golden King 550W Power Supply Review

Super Flower Golden King 550W Power Supply Review

Introduction
Most of the time we focus on enthusiast and gaming power supplies here at TweakTown. Occasionally, when a product warrants it, we will cover other power supplies as well. The unit we are taking a look at from Super Flower today is one of those units that warrants taking a good look at. It is the Super Flower Golden King SF-550P14PE 550W power supply. After taking a look at the Super Flower Golden Green 800W PSU last month, we were quite interested in seeing what else they had to offer, so we had them send one over.
At this point you're probably wondering just what is so special about a 550W power supply. Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is one of the first 80Plus Platinum power supplies to come to market. You heard that right, Platinum efficiency. Up until now, the 80Plus Platinum logo has just been a myth that nobody has really seen it. For those unfamiliar with the certification, 80Plus Platinum certification requires that the power supply be able to achieve 90%, 92%, and 89% efficiency at 20%, 50%, and 100% loads respectively.
At the time of writing this article, there are only 18 power supplies listed with Platinum certification on the 80Plus.org website. Super Flower has designed six of these. Let's check this thing out and see what Platinum is all about

Specifications, Availability and Pricing

Super Flower Golden King 550W Power Supply Review

The Golden King 550W power supply certainly doesn't have the high amperage rails that we are used to seeing, but it still has some respectable outputs. The 45.5A single 12V rail has enough power to run a moderately powered graphics card or even a pair of low end CrossFireX/SLI cards. Both of the 3.3V and 5V rails are capable of 20A each and have a combined output of 100W. This should be plenty of power, but probably won't allow for much, if any, overclocking.

Super Flower Golden King 550W Power Supply Review

Even though the Golden King 550W power supply isn't capable of powering a fully featured enthusiast rig, it is still packed full of features. All of the protections are here for current, power, and voltage as well as Short Circuit Protection. The four natively wired cables are sleeved while the modular cables that come with the Golden King 550W are all of the ribbon type and do not need to be sleeved. Super Flower even rates the Golden King 550W for 100% continuous output at 50C.
Availability in the U.S. is very poor because Super Flower doesn't directly sell power supplies in the United States. Super Flower lists the Golden King 550W for $159.99, making it one of the most expensive power supplies in the 500W-600W bracket. About the only power supply in this range that is more expensive is the Kingwin LZP-550 which is listed for $169.99 on Newegg. This unit is identical to the Golden King, inside and out, as it is manufactured by Super Flower as well. Doing some searching will yield the Golden King 550W available overseas for آ€149.

HIS Radeon HD 6990 4GB Overclocked Video Card Review
Final Thoughts
Really, when you look at the performance the HD 6990 4GB offers out of the box there's not really any reason to flick that BIOS switch over to position 1 and unleash the beast that is AUSUM mode. So you find yourself wondering, why flick the switch, throw more voltage through the card and push the clocks even further?
Well, I answer that question with another question! Why not? Sure, you probably don't find yourself overclocking for everyday use, because it's not really necessary, especially at the moment as the card eats up every game benchmark at any single screen resolution. If you're going to benchmark, though, the chances are you're going to want to overclock and if you're happy to get right into benchmarking, you can push that core to 1GHz while pushing the fan to 100%.
More often we overclock because we want to, not because we need to. If you want to make use of even more power and don't mind the extra dBs that the setup will carry, go for it, but if you buy yourself a HIS HD 6990 4GB and don't touch overclocking or the AUSUM switch and you're going to be just as happy.
The HIS HD 6990 4GB is a great card and it feels like it's been forever since we saw a dual GPU model not just from AMD, but from anyone. It's here now and while stock is a little in and out, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting a card. The biggest problem at the moment might be getting one for $699, as there seems to be a little bit of an early adopter's tax thrown on top. Still, at an extra $20 or $30 the card continues to be amazing and at $699 the extra few dollars don't seem as significant.
HIS has done a fantastic job with the package by including a load of convertors that are going to make getting the card up and running straight away with any monitor an absolute breeze.
As you would expect, the HIS HD 6990 4GB is a fast card and overall just a great card for people who demand power. Overclocking potential clearly exists, but it's fairly safe to assume a lot of people probably won't bother due to the simple fact it's not really necessary.

SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX simplifies Eyefinity for Gamers!
SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX simplifies Eyefinity for Gamers!
Direct support for 3 DVI monitors in Eyefinity mode with SAPPHIRE FleX family
SAPPHIRE Technology has just announced the SAPPHIRE HD 6950 Flex Edition, bringing a new level of gaming performance to the company's unique solution for multi-screen gaming.
Most graphics cards based on AMD technology require the third monitor in an Eyefinity set-up to be a DisplayPort monitor, or connected with an active DisplayPort Adapter. The SAPPHIRE FleX family can support three DVI monitors in Eyefinity mode and deliver a true SLS (Single Large Surface) work area without the need for costly active adapters. The first two monitors are connected to the two DVI ports and the third to an HDMI to DVI cable (supplied) with no extra hardware required.

SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX simplifies Eyefinity for Gamers!

The SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX is now the highest performing card with this feature, allowing gamers to use low-cost DVI monitors for all three screens. Additional monitors can be added to the setup, but must be DisplayPort connected.
Like the standard HD 6950, the SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX Edition boasts true DX 11 capability and the powerful configuration of 1408 stream processors and 88 texture processing units. With its clock speeds of 800MHz for the core and 1250Mhz (5 Gb/sec effective) for the memory this model brings multi-screen enjoyment to even hard-core gamers.
A Dual BIOS feature allows enthusiasts to experiment with alternative BIOS settings and performance can be further enhanced with the SAPPHIRE overclocking tool, TriXX, available as a free download. Cooled by the award-winning SAPPHIRE exclusive Vapor-X technology, the SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX Edition has great thermal performance too - and quietly speeds through even the most demanding applications.

SAPPHIRE HD 6950 FleX simplifies Eyefinity for Gamers!

Meet the family !
The SAPPHIRE HD 6950 Flex Edition joins three other members of the FleX family, providing a choice of price and performance points for different applications and users, including the pioneering HD 5770 FleX Edition introduced last year.
The recently introduced SAPPHIRE HD 6870 FleX was the first FleX series card to feature AMD's second generation DX11 architecture including the latest core technology for streaming 3D content. It has 1120 Stream processors and 1GB of the latest GDDR5 memory, which together with clock speeds of 900MHz core and 1050MHz (4.2GHz effective) for the memory, make it a great performer for most applications. Its efficient cooler with three 8mm heatpipes and sealed dust resisting bearings keep the card cool yet running quietly even under load.
For more cost conscious users, the new SAPPHIRE HD 5670 FleX delivers a cost-effective Eyefinity solution for increased productivity in tasks such as editing or business applications. The SAPPHIRE HD 5670 is the highest performing DX11 graphics card that requires no additional power connector, making the SAPPHIRE FleX edition ideal for upgrading existing PC systems and providing additional monitor support. It has 400 Stream processors and 1GB of the latest GDDR5 memory, which together with clock speeds of 775MHz core and 1000MHz (4GHz effective) for the memory deliver excellent performance and great value.
HD Video
The SAPPHIRE FleX family all have on-board hardware UVD (Unified Video decoder), considerably reducing CPU load and delivering smooth decoding of Blu-rayآ™ and other video content for both VC-1 and H.264 codecs, as well as Mpeg files. The UVD can decode two 1080p HD video streams simultaneously and display HD video in high quality with Windows Aero mode enabled. Both of the HD 5670 and HD 5770 have HDMI 1.3a with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The HD 6950 and HD 6870 FleX Editions have HDMI 1.4 which additionally supports Stereoscopic output.
The SAPPHIRE FleX family is supported by AMD's DirectX 11 WHQL certified graphics driver which delivers support for all of the key DirectX 11 level features required for new gaming experiences and acceleration of next generation high performance applications.

COPENHAGEN, Mar. 21, 2011 - SteelSeries, the leading global manufacturer of gaming peripherals, today announced a fundraising initiative for gamers to help support earthquake relief through the Japanese Red Cross Society. Starting today and throughout the next month, on every purchase of a mouse in SteelSeries' branded line of professional gaming mice, which include the SteelSeries Ikari, SteelSeries Xai and SteelSeries Kinzu, the company will donate 25% of the proceeds to the Japanese Red Cross Society to aide in earthquake relief. SteelSeries will also offer a 25% off discount of this product line in the SteelSeries Web Shop as an incentive for gamers to fuel the fundraising initiative: http://steelseries.com/japan.
"The tragic events in Japan have touched us deeply, and while we have been lucky that so far our Tokyo-based SteelSeries team and partners appear to be safe, our thoughts and best wishes go out everyone in the region who has been affected," said Bruce Hawver, SteelSeries CEO. "We hope our global community of gamers will help to drive this fundraising initiative or will aide in donations and support for victims by other means."
Japanese characters, culture, competitive gaming in Japan, and the innovation from Japanese companies which helped to sculpt the video game industry, are what influenced the SteelSeries team in designing and the naming of its line of professional gaming mice. These influences were filtered into SteelSeries' first mouse in 2007, the Ikari (anger, rage), and carried into the recent Xai (talent) mouse. Additionally, some of the components used in these mice are Japanese, simply because they offer performance and durability unmatched by other similar components. These influences were what made this SteelSeries product line the obvious category for this initiative.

AVADirect Now Offers ATI Radeon HD 6990 Graphics Cards

AVADirect has added the long awaited ATI HD Radeon 6990 graphics card to our website. This card boasts double the specifications of the previous the ATI HD 6980 card released, and continues to offer Eyefinity support, improved shader model 5.0, and DirectX 11. A jaw-dropping 4GB of shared video RAM is definitely appealing to those who follow the GPU wars closely. It's important to keep in mind that the HD 6990 is a two-in-one, dual GPU in a single card. Driver support has improved greatly from AMD within the past year, and price points continue to grow increasingly competitive to their Nvidia competitors. What truly makes this card one to consider is the lowered nanometer size, dropped to 40nm which should technically reduce the amount of heat generated by the card itself. (A known issue with most ATI graphics cards) The overall 150W consumption of the card backs up that theory further, and will leave end-users enticed further. For you "ease of use" fanatics, HD 7.1 surround sound can be routed through the HDMI port creating the ultimate HD experience for media center use. I personally cannot wait to see the direction AMD and Nvidia will take a year from now. Performance becomes tighter, and prices are more competitive than ever. Keep up the good work ATI! Now it's Nvidia's move. We will list more brands of ATI's HD 6990 as they become available.

AVADirect Now Offers NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Graphics Cards

AVADirect recently added the new line of Nvidia's GTX 550 cards to our website. These cards are based of of the GTS 450 process and have improved cooling, performance, and video RAM. In respect, the cards are practically parallel with the GTX 460 card, but run much cooler and quieter. The card is not in any way to compete with high-end cards, but to provide an alternate solution to a once problematic configuration caused from heat or noise. The drivers are also a bit different, and any Nvidia enthusiasts can tell you Nvidia did not do the most stellar job with their 400 series drivers. They did correct numerous driver-signing issues with the 500 series cards and continue to make even more improvements with the physical aspect of the series as well. More than likely, these cards will be placed in the "price to performance" category and will be considered for systems that require more than average video performance, but not so much for the high-end workstation/gaming systems. Either way, Nvidia does a good job at cleaning up their previous mistakes and I cannot wait for future releases from the world renown graphics card manufacturer.
