AT&T are set to acquire T-Mobile for $39 billion
The swipe of AT&T's ultra-platinum-super-crazy credit card can be heard the world over with news appearing today that AT&T has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a cash-and-stock transaction currently valued at approx. $39 billion.

The agreement has been approved by the Board of Directors of both companies, Deutsche Telekom will receive an equity stake in AT&T that gives it an ownership interest in of approximately 8-percent. The deal also allows a Deutsche Telekom representative to join the AT&T Board of Directors. The deal is meant to be sealed, awaiting regulatory approval within the next 12 months.
AT&T will of course enjoy the T-Mobile customers, but they're also now owners of T-Mobile's (Long Term Evolution) network assests which will improve network quality for both customers' customers and gaining more of the limited wireless spectrum. With the transaction, AT&T is committing to a significant expansion of robust 4G LTE deployment to 95-percent of the US population to reach an additional 46.5 million Americans beyond current plans - this includes rural communities and small towns.
Randall Stephenson, AT&T Chairman and CEO said in a statement:
This transaction represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand critical infrastructure for our nation's future. It will improve network quality, and it will bring advanced LTE capabilities to more than 294 million people. Mobile broadband networks drive economic opportunity everywhere, and they enable the expanding high-tech ecosystem that includes device makers, cloud and content providers, app developers, customers, and more. During the past few years, America's high-tech industry has delivered innovation at unprecedented speed, and this combination will accelerate its continued growth. This transaction delivers significant customer, shareowner and public benefits that are available at this level only from the combination of these two companies with complementary network technologies, spectrum positions and operations. We are confident in our ability to execute a seamless integration, and with additional spectrum and network capabilities, we can better meet our customers' current demands, build for the future and help achieve the President's goals for a high-speed, wirelessly connected America.

Heavy Rain will not get a sequel, for now?
The news is grim for fellow Heavy Rain fans with developer Quantic Dream not interested in making a sequel to its multi-BAFTA winning PlayStation 3 crime saga. Quantic Dream studio boss David Cage confirmed the news at the BAFTA ceremony in London last night where the game picked up multiple awards.

Heavy Rain won awards for technical innovation, story and music - Cage also revealed that Quantic Dreams next game while "still very dark" will explore new territory. He goes on to say:
"We created the genre," he insisted, referring to Heavy Rain's brand of interactive storytelling.
"We own the genre, and we want to show that Heavy Rain was not a coincidence or a lucky shot - that it was really something that makes sense and that we can build on.
But at the same time I didn't want to make a sequel. I made that very clear before knowing whether the game would be a success or a failure, because I want to show that it's really a genre. Which means that you can use a similar drama to tell any type of story in any genre and in any style.
So, we are going to explore different directions. Still very dark, still for adults, but completely different from Heavy Rain. We want to satisfy our fans, but we want to surprise them too. That's our challenge.
Cage said in July last year that Quantic Dream were working on two separate titles.
We continue to explore how we can go further with interactive drama, working on emotion and interactive storytelling for a mature audience, but with a very different story and a different approach.
To me, this news does not confirm a sequel will never get made - but is just supposedly not in production right now.

Microsoft and ASUS tease with the Eee Slate
Microsoft are still trying to throw some bait into the ever-growing tablet market and now partnered with Asus might be able to at least attract some customers to a Windows-based tablet. Enter the ASUS Eee Slate, a 12.1-inch, Core i5-powered, Windows 7 equipped tablet that comes with a Wacom digitizer and dedicated house in its side to slide the stylus into.

Also supplied is a Bluetooth keyboard in the box which lead Microsoft to describe the Eee Slate as a device that is "very PC" and "not very PC". Some of the videos below will make more sense of that, check them out for a look at the upcoming Eee Slate.

Volition says PC gaming is still worth investing in
Volition have come out and said that they still love themselves a bit of PC gaming lovin' even with the onslaught of other developers blaming piracy on PC for lack of sales. The THQ-owned studio has taken a different approach to it with Volition studio manager Eric Barker saying:
Let's make a game that's worth stealing, and then we'll worry about making sure they don't.

He continues with:
Some people say PC is dying. Some people say PC is the future, PC is the most variable, because it depends on what you've got under the hood. For us, the key thing was making sure the PC version was done in-house.
This stems from the PC ports of Saints Row 2 and Red Faction: Guerrilla both being done by external studios which suffered quality issues. For their sequels, Volition have decided to bring PC development in-house and Barker has said PC gamers will reap the rewards.
You should see [the PC version of Red Faction: Armageddon], it looks absolutely beautiful. If you've got a great graphics card it looks fantastic. We definitely believe PC games are great and if they're done right and done well by a studio, they're phenomenal.
There's a lot of debate and discussion. I can't predict the future, but I'm really happy with how Red Faction: Armageddon looks on PC. It's beautiful.
I think the best quote from Barker is his thoughts on piracy which I agree with:
I don't think [piracy] is something at the forefront for us," he said. First and foremost, we want to make sure we're making a game people would want to pirate. Let's make a game that's worth stealing, and then we'll worry about making sure they don't.

Ah, Sidekicks - you were ever so awesome for your text messaging abilities, but on came the iPhone and really smashed the whole "let's have two phones, shall we" mantra that I had. T-Mobile has announced an Android-powered Sidekick that is coming from Samsung 'later this spring'.

The Android-powered Sidekick 4G runs an Android 2.2-based OS, has a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 3 megapixel cam and a touchscreen 3.5-inch WVGA screen. Nice specs for a Sidekick device. It includes Samsung Media Hub and Qik video calling. Other features included are DriveSmart (which locks out texting while driving for the text messaging obsessed) and Sidekick Group Text and Cloud Text.

Microsoft tease us with the future of video gaming
Microsoft have shown off its goal for its next-generation gaming platform, the video below is dated from May 2010 so it's quite a bit old now but it shows the direction Microsoft have in mind for their ever-growing gaming platforms. The video shows off some concepts and principals of what the WGX (Windows Gaming Experience) team hopes to achieve. We see a blend of Windows, Xbox and mobile platforms being merged into one.

The video shows off some Kinect action and gives a bit of hugging action toward PC too, remember Microsoft being quoted as "doubling down" on PC gaming. The companies WGX team which is comprised of all gaming-related attempts between Microsoft platforms has been quite hard at work, obviously. Let's hope that this work goes toward something new and exciting.
A LinkedIn ad that has since been removed gives you more of an idea of the team's work:
The Windows Gaming Experience (WGX) Team is a very passionate team embarking to create a new world-class gaming platform that comes alive in the presence of services and leverages the power of the PC to help define the next generation of Windows and Web gaming to 300 million potential customers. WGX team is realizing its strategy via the delivery of Windows and Web gaming solutions built upon existing available services (internal and external to Microsoft) as well as building as needed Azure-based services to enable this vision.
We are at the early stages of defining and architecting and developing excitement around gaming in Windows and the Web. We have a highly visible company-wide charter to promote gaming and empower game developers to create compelling, immersive, rich experiences in Windows and on the Web. We are on a mission to make games a first-class citizen in Windows through our efforts and in collaboration with other groups across the Interactive Entertainment & Devices (IEB) division.

Razer TRON: Legacy Gaming Mouse Review

The TRON: Legacy Mouse from Razer is inspired by the movie and it seems to have done the original and the sequel justice. If you're a true fan you'll immediately spot the details of the finger-scroll being similar to the lightcycle's wheel.

The first sign that this is a mouse inspired by a Hollywood movie comes when you plug the mouse in. The lights flicker madly and it sounds like it's a car being turned on. Neat the first time, but how great is it going to be the thousandth time? As there is no way to turn it off. It sounds like the movie, but I think that ultimately it makes your mouse sound like a cheap toy.

No one can argue that this mouse looks fabulous, but how does it feel? Well, it's made of plastic, shiny plastic, not that smooth rubberized plastic we've come to love from gaming mice. Apart from the main mouse buttons there's an extra two on each side, and by default the left side buttons are assigned to browse forward and backward functions in your browser, while the right button's for on the fly DPI switching. However, when you start to click the buttons you notice that the top buttons are very 'clicky' while the sides are a little more solid cushioned.

What about performance? It turns out that the 5600dpi sensor can work on fabrics, books, tablets, the back of your hand, a pair of jeans, and anything that isn't glossy. The mouse felt a little big in my hand at first, but I quickly adapted. It must have been the right angles that surround the entire mouse that made me keenly aware of its size. Other gaming mice tend to have curved rounded edges that form to your hand. It is unavoidable to have such angular construction in the mouse. After all, it wouldn't be TRON inspired without it!

Looking at connectivity, it's 100% reliable since it's a wired mouse. This is a con in my book since we are living in a wireless age and I am a laptop user, there was too much cord cluttering up my desk. However, desktop users would the extra length handy.

To summarize, I'll firstly run back over the things that appeal most to me about this mouse. Firstly, there's that superb 5600dpi 3.5G sensor, and the fact that it's inspired by such an epic blockbuster would be a plus to many (although no doubt a con to others). The funky lights during usage are a nice touch, but you may wish to (and can) turn them off via the settings panel.

The other cool thing is the sound it makes when you boot up, but as mentioned earlier, there's no way to turn that off and eventually it may annoy. And did I mention the fabulous design? This mouse really looks the part!
So, what didn't I like? - Not much I'm happy to say, though the fact it's built completely out of plastics is disappointing, as is the fact that it's wired-only. A bit of rubber aside from the finger-scroll would have made all the difference to the feel of this mouse.

AMD Radeon HD 6950 1GB Video Card in CrossFire
Introduction

I'm a huge fan of the HD 6950 1GB; it brings the power of the HD 6950 to the table without the price tag that is associated with the 2GB version of the card that launched originally. Already impressed with the 1GB version from Sapphire we looked at a bit back, we'll today be having a look at the reference AMD one.
Instead of just doing the boring ol' thing and sliding it into our testbed by itself and seeing it inevitably performing near identical to the previous Sapphire we looked at, we instead paired it with the said Sapphire version and looked at CrossFire performance.
Due to the fact it's an AMD reference card, we don't have any sort of package going on, so instead we'll just have a quick look at the card, its specifications and then just roll into the benchmark line-up.
The Card

The HD 6950 1GB doesn't hold any surprises since it carries the reference design. We've just got that typical black and red cooler with the fan that sits down the end. Power comes in the form of two 6-Pin PCI-E power connectors and closer to the front we've got two CrossFire connectors and our little dual BIOS switch.
Connectivity doesn't hold any surprises; we've got a Dual-Link DVI, Single-Link DVI, HDMI and two Mini-DisplayPort connectors.
Specifications
Continuing on with the fact that we're dealing with a reference card, we're of course just going to see reference clocks. This means that our core comes in at 800MHz while our 1GB of GDDR5 carries with it a 5000MHz QDR clock.

The main thing we want to make sure of here is that we're of course running CrossFire and you can see down the bottom that it's indeed enabled and 2 GPUs are running.

Viking Modular SATADIMM 200GB SSD Review

Introduction
There is no doubt that the most innovative SSD to come out of 2010 was the Viding Modular Solutions SATADIMM. Based on another 2010 standout, the SandForce SF-1000 Series controller, the SATADIMM is not only a great example of SSD technology revolutionizing the storage market, but also how thoughtful manufacturers can shape future standards.
Viking Modular Solutions isn't a high volume manufacturer and you aren't going to find many of their products in the retail market. Viking is far from a one hit wonder, though. The company was started in 1988 and since their first product has been manufacturing high quality parts for the enterprise market space and for some of the world's largest OEM manufacturers.
Vikings current product line-up consists of many memory products. You can find everything from standard 2.5" SSDs and memory DIMMs to the custom SATA Cube and SATADIMM. Today we are looking at the Viking Modular Solutions SATADIMM, a SandForce SF-1000 Series based SSD that is designed for the enterprise market, but is unlike the current crop of 2.5" SSDs that are in the channel now. To be more specific, the SATADIMM is a unique implementation that gives users the ability to run up to 400GB of capacity in a single DDR3 DIMM (memory) slot.
To know the innovative value of the SATADIMM is to know the current state of the server market. 1U servers are 1.75 inches tall. This size has very limited space for disk drives; only five 2.5" drives can fit across the front in drive sleds in a 1U chassis and that number drops to four when using 3.5" drives. With server motherboards now offering an increased number of DIMM sockets (The Tyan S7016 has 18!), Viking engineered a way to make better use of unused DIMM sockets while giving more flexibility to users looking for more high speed storage capacity.
Once you add in virtualization the SATADIMM makes even more sense. Just imagine using an array of SATADIMMs for database tasks and four 3.5" SAS drives handling long term storage duties (storage server) all in the same 1U form factor server. This not only saves on rack space storage costs, but also on power usage fees.

Winning Eleven Nintendo 3DS Hands On Preview

No matter your sporting persuasion, it's hard to deny that Football/Soccer is the world's most popular sport. Offering players the chance to earn millions per year, there really is something special about the sport where you kick a ball into a goal. And for years we have seen many video game developers try and build that sport into a successful game.
Recently two heavyweights have fought for the title; FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. With the 3DS around the corner it was natural that someone would try and get a football game ready, and they have. Winning Eleven 3D soccer is the 3DS Pro Evolution game and we took the final Japanese version for a spin.
The first thing that is apparent is the improvement of the interface when compared to the Nintendo DS versions of the game. As well as this, nothing has been left out from the console versions, meaning that you are getting one very meaty game if you pick this up on launch. This includes all the major licences such as the UEFA Champions League from the console big boys as well.

The first two things you will notice is the 3D featured in the game as well as the incredible gameplay. One of the most popular features of the console Pro Evolution Soccer games is that the animations are so crisp and clean and the developers have managed to convey this over to the 3D version of the game as well. Players react to the ball as if they would in real life and having skilful players dribble and play with the ball is a better tactic than just shooting over and over again.
The improved controls of the 3DS system become very apparent as well and the addition of the analogue stick is perfect for Pro Evolution Soccer. The movement is a lot more crisp and you feel like you have a much more direct control of the players when comparing to previous PES games on the Nintendo DS and having to struggle with the DPAD.
Of course, the game ships in 3D and there is no doubt when it clicks (that is, when you get the system the correct distance from your eyes) that it looks absolutely stunning. The 3D gives the field and players a layer of depth as expected, but to watch a replay of a stunning goal in 3D really does take the game to the next level.
However, the 3D is not without its problems from what we can see and it will take some time to adjust. Football is a game that traditionally is played at a very fast speed and the best teams in the world react on fast counterattacks to score quick goals. This is represented well in the game, but the 3D struggles to keep up.

We found the screen blurring a bit, or not really keeping up with the 3D as much as we would like, and this game when compared to for example Street Fighter IV, does occasionally have some real issues with the 3D implementation. However, that said, once you look past this the graphics and detail of the players is nothing short of amazing for a portable handheld.
Of course, we have seen PES on the PSP in the past, but we would go as far as saying based on the Japanese import that the game plays a much better game on the 3DS, even without the spiffy addition of 3D.
Winning Eleven 3D Soccer fills the void that many fans will want filled on the day of the 3DS launch. The 3D implementation has been done well despite the fact it may take some time to adjust for gamers and the gameplay is that traditional PES style we've all come to expect from Seabass and his team. Based on the Japanese import, Winning Eleven 3D Soccer (otherwise known as Pro Evolution 3D Soccer) is most definitely a game football fans need to look at come the 3DS launch.

Cubitek Launches ''Magic Cube'' Modular Case Series
Cubitek presents another unique case series after the successful launch of the "Tank" Series. The "Magic Cube" enclosures are made of 100% Aluminum and offer a revolutionary, modular design. Two models - the Magic Cube B210 and Magic Cube B211 with freely configurable modules are available immediately.
After the success of the "Tattoo" series and the launch of the highly anticipated, all Aluminum "Tank" family of enclosures, Cubitek presents an absolutely unique new case concept. Also constructed purely of Aluminum, all traditional parts of a normal chassis have been modularized with the Magic Cube cases. These sets consist of three separate enclosures: the main module for the motherboard, CPU and graphic cards, the storage module for 3.5 inch hard drives and the drive module for optical drives and card readers.

Both Cubitek Magic Cube cases have an anodized black layer on the outside and inside, while the use of Aluminum makes them extremely light weight. The heart of the system consists of the main module, which may house a Micro-ATX, ATX or even E-ATX mainboard. Cubitek has also added two USB 3.0, one eSATA and a pair of Audio connectivity to the chassis. Since the Magic Cube can easily fit long graphic cards with up to 310 mm length and can be used for high-performance processors, a potent cooling system is also possible. CPU coolers with a height of up to 180 mm along with four included fans within the mainboard module guarantee a cool and stable system. Two 2.5 inch hard drives may also be installed on the floor of this module.

The separate drive module offers enough space for two 5.25 inch units, while a single slot may also be used for 3.5 inch drives or card readers thanks to the included adapter. The Cubitek Magic Cube cases differentiate themselves through the different sized HDD modules, as the Magic Cube B210 offers enough space for three 3.5 inch hard drives and a pair of 2.5 inch ones, while the Magic Cube B211 can hold up to eight 3.5 inch units and two 2.5 inch drives. Both the drive and storage modules have multiple openings through which one can route all cables back to the main module.
If a separation of all three modules is not wanted, the user may configure the three parts freely by connecting them to each other. One can connect the drive and storage modules, while placing the main unit next to them for examples. Such possibilities make the seamless integration into an existing work space or home theater a breeze.
The Cubitek "Magic Cube" series is available immediately at www.caseking.de. The Magic Cube B210 carries a price tag of 179.90 Euro, while the Magic Cube B211 sells for 199.90 Euro. A special overview of the new series can be found at http://www.caseking.de/magic-cube
