Microsoft targets Barnes & Noble's Android e-reader with two lawsuits
Going after the increasingly-popular Android platform, Microsoft has yesterday filed two complaints through which it accuses Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec of patent infringement. The two lawsuits specifically target the Nook Color e-reader which runs Android.
According to the papers submitted with the US District Court of the Western District of Washington and International Trade Commission (ITC), the Microsoft patents violated by Android and B&N's ebook reader allow for 'natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need, surfing the Web more quickly, and interacting with documents and e-books.'
"The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft's patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights. To facilitate that we have established an industry-wide patent licensing program for Android device manufacturers," said Horacio Gutierrez, Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Intellectual Property & Licensing. "Other vendors, including HTC, a market leader in Android smartphones, have taken a license under this program, and we have tried for over a year to reach licensing agreements with Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec. Their refusals to take licenses leave us no choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations and fulfill our responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year to bring great software products and services to market."
Our Fairly Legal sense is tingling, there must a settlement in the air.

Apple sues Amazon, wants 'App Store' all for itself :: Posted by THRASHER2
Amazon's own mobile app store has yet to be released and already it's in trouble as Apple has filed a complaint against the Kindle seller last week in order to prevent it from using 'app store'.
Apple is currently engaged in proceedings to register App Store as a trademark and says that Amazon's use of the words would confuse and mislead customers. Of course, iOS users wouldn't really be 'confused' since Amazon's store would sell Android apps but even so, Apple doesn't like it and wants the court to throw the ban hammer at Amazon.
If Apple succeeds with its lawsuit then Amazon will have to figure out a new name for its store.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini smartphone exposed, packs 1.4 GHz :: Posted by THRASHER2
UK carrier Three has been a little careless with its release plans and as a result the world has been 'warned' about the upcoming arrival of a new Samsung Galaxy series smartphone, a 'high end' model called Galaxy S2 Mini which runs Android 2.3.
Expected to make its UK debut in April, the S2 Mini features a 3.7-inch (800 x 480) touchscreen, an unnamed 1.4 GHz (likely single-core) processor, a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, a front VGA camera, WiFi (WiFi hotspot capabilities included), GPS, and HSDPA/HSUPA support.
This one certainly seems like a worthy little brother to the dual-core-packing Galaxy S2 (S II), hopefully its pricing will reflect this. Now how about a mid-range Galaxy S2 Micro?

AT&T to acquire T-Mobile USA through $39 billion deal :: Posted by THRASHER2
The US carrier landscape is set for a major overhaul as AT&T announced the signing of an agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom through a cash-and-stock transaction valued at $39 billion.
AT&T plans to shell out $25 billion in cash and $14 billion worth in stock to get T-Mobile USA, the end result being a major customer and capacity boost. According to AT&T, this deal will enable it to 'improve network quality in the near term for both companiesآ’ customers' and will provide an additional 46.5 million people with access to its 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. And this would only be the beginning for the titan that AT&T hopes to become.
"This transaction delivers significant customer, shareowner and public benefits that are available at this level only from the combination of these two companies with complementary network technologies, spectrum positions and operations," said Randall Stephenson, AT&T Chairman and CEO. "We are confident in our ability to execute a seamless integration, and with additional spectrum and network capabilities, we can better meet our customersآ’ current demands, build for the future and help achieve the Presidentآ’s goals for a high-speed, wirelessly connected America."
According to the two companies, the transaction is expected to be closed within the next 12 months, but only if they can convince regulators that the 'expanded' AT&T doesn't pose a threat to the US communications market. Sprint already objected the deal.

Fanless dual-core Atom in Q4 2011 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cedar Trail that is
Intel is quite happy with its Atom N455. It has found its place to many netbooks and keeps many users happy. This Atom has a 1.66GHz core clock, 512KB cache and 6.5 W TDP. It is not spectacular but it has been doing rather well. This is a single core CPU with two threads.
However, with official Intel Tray 1ku Budgetary Price of $64, itآ’s not the cheapest kid on the block, either. As of Q4 2011, Intel plans to offer a new product in this price category, the Cedar Trail dual-core CPU that can even work without a fan. Intel shared some of the specs with its valued partners but so far we can only confirm that itآ’s a dual-core CPU with a 3.5W TDP. It uses the same old NM10 chipset which will make motherboard design a bit easier and cheaper.
There will be another Cedar trail dual-core, the one to replace the N475 netbook Atom, but this one aims for higher clocks and a 6.5W TDP.

Black Ops on PC to get First Strike DLC :: Posted by THRASHER2
Will arrive on March 25th for purchase
Treyarch has confirmed that the First Strike downloadable content pack for Call of Duty Black Ops will finally arrive for purchase for the PC version of the game starting on March 25th. The First Strike map pack DLC has already been released for the Xbox 360 more than a month ago and for the PlayStation 3 on March 3rd.
While Black Ops players on the PC will likely be pleased that the First Strike DLC is finally coming to the PC, we suspect that many of them will be complaining about the purchase price. Apparently, if you pre-order the Frist Strike DLC though Steam you can save $1.50 by choosing to do so, but that will apparently be the only way to save any money on its purchase.
Still, many Black Ops fans are already expressing their thanks to Treyarch for making the content available to PC players, as it was apparently rumored that it might not arrive for the PC platform.

AT&T to buy T-Mobile USA :: Posted by THRASHER2
Combination makes the most sense
After a few false starts and stops, Deutsche Telekom has entered into a deal to sell T-Mobile USA to AT&T. The decision has been approved by Boards of Directors at both companies in a transaction that is valued at approximately $39 billion in combination of cash and stock. AT&T will assume no debt from T-Mobile USA, as the company has a strong balance sheet.
The deal provides perhaps the best combination of the companies in the fact that both companies are currently on the GSM platform and both are committed to LTE 4G deployments going forward. The combinations of networks provided significant spectrum which would be an advantage moving forward. AT&T says as a result of this plan it will be able to reach an additional 46.5 million Americans with its 4G LTE deployment meaning that it will have coverage for 95% of the US population. It is estimated that the gain in coverage from T-Mobile USA cell sites would have taken five years to build.
It is estimated that AT&T will gain an additional 33 million customers from T-Mobile USA as part of this transaction. For T-Mobile customers, the transaction will be pretty seamless as both carriers have GSM/UMTS network that is compatible which is the clear advantage in the deal. Current T-Mobile USA customers will enjoy better coverage than they have ever had before.

Radeon HD 6990 OC BIOS switch under warranty :: Posted by THRASHER2
XFX puts the foot down
We already wrote about the warranty issue back when the HD 6990 was launched and we told you that it is simply a matter of time before some partner steps out and says that the cards are oficially covered by a proper warranty despite AMD's dodgy warranty statement. The wait is finally over as XFX has boldly stepped out saying that the warranty stands under usual RMA terms even under 880MHz OC.
The XFX didn't really surprise us as some partners that we talked to have already said that, unoficially, the card is still covered under warranty and regular RMA terms. The reviewers that have pushed the HD 6990 to work on 2nd BIOS have already tested the card and it works pretty good, although some do suggest that the fan should be pushed to a bit higher RPM just to keep the temperatures a bit down.
It is nice to know that at least XFX had enough questions about it which made them put its foot down and say officially that the card is still under full warranty. Let's see which partners are joining in on the fun.
