Smartphone users can now shop Amazon's Appstore for Android
Amazon has opened the Appstore for Android, providing another option for app shopping to U.S. users of smartphones with Google's operating system. Amazon is trying to lure users away from Google's Market by offering users a free paid app every day. The first such application is Angry Birds Rio, which usually costs US$0.99, and is an exclusive for Android users via Amazon's store. Users can also test applications with a feature called “Test Drive,†which runs applications on a simulated smartphone.

Apple patches unused Pwn2Own bug, 55 others in Mac OS
Apple on Monday patched 56 vulnerabilities, most of them critical flaws that could be used to hijack machines, as part of 2011's first broad update of Mac OS X. Microsoft sues Barnes & Noble over Android
Microsoft has filed a patent lawsuit against bookseller Barnes & Noble, accusing the company of running infringing software on its Android-based Nook e-reader. The lawsuit, filed Monday in U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington, also names device manufacturers Foxconn International Holdings and Inventec, Microsoft said. Accompanying the lawsuit is a complaint at the USITC (U.S. International Trade Commission), which has the power to ban imports into the U.S. of devices that infringe patents.

AMD hires former HP executive as CIO
AMD continued shuffling its senior executive ranks on Monday, appointing former Hewlett-Packard executive Mike Wolfe as its chief information officer. Nearly two-thirds of enterprises are supporting more or "far more" applications than they actually need to run their operations, according to a survey released Monday by Hewlett-Packard and Capgemini. Just 4 percent of the roughly 100 IT decision-makers polled consider every system they run to be "business-critical," according to the study.

Eclipse offers hosted access to Web dev tools effort
The Eclipse Foundation is offering on Monday beta access to a hosted version of the organization's planned Orion platform for building and integrating Web development tools. The OrionHub service will let developers experiment with Orion and provide feedback. An early release of Orion features an editor for JavaScript, HTML, and CSS that runs in browsers and can link to popular Web-based tools, Eclipse said. Orion is intended to move software development to the Web, in recognition of more and more applications going to the Web and cloud infrastructure.
