Milli HD breaks cover at CES 2011
CES 2011, Las Vegas- MiLi has been creating some really cool power devices for all sorts of gadgets like external battery packs that will keep your favorite gadgets all charged up and ready to use. The company is on hand at CES 2011 in Las Vegas and is unveiling a new docking station that will work with any dockable Apple device from the iPad to the iPhone and can shoot content out to your TV.
The device is called the MiLi HD and it is a charging dock with HDMI output for your big screen that supports up to 1080i resolution. The device also has an integrated speaker and a mini USB connection. The dock will charge your device while it streams the content to your TV. Using the dock you can stream anything your iPad plays to your TV like Hulu Plus and Netflix. The device will sell for $99.99.

Zotac unveils new AD03 and AD03 Plus Blu-ray barebones rigs
Zotac has unveiled some new barebones HTPC machines that look more like a normal Blu-ray player than a HTPC. That is a good thing too since these machines will be in an entertainment center along with your other gear. The machines are the Zbox Blu-ray AD03 and AD03 Plus. They are exactly the same save one key feature.
The Plus version comes packed with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD whereas the standard version has no memory or storage and the user has to add their own. Neither of the machines come with an OS installed. They both use the AMD E-350 APU running at 1.6GHz with dual-cores. Graphics for the machine are handled by AMD Radeon HD 6310 GPU with 80 shaders and an engine clock of 500MHz.
Other features include a USB 3.0 port, a single mini-PCI Express expansion port, a slot-loading Blu-ray drive, Gigabit Ethernet, and WiFi. The machines support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD sound and ship with Cyberlink PowerDVD software for playback of Blu-ray movies. The Plus version will sell for $499 and the normal version is $399.

PlayStation root key has been released
George Hotz, otherwise known as GeoHot has posted what he claims as the world's first PlayStation 3 root key, which is used for code signing games.
The root key enables the PS3 to know which is a genuine piece of software and which, is not. If other hackers start using it, the key will allow the use of custom software and pirated games. It will enable the use of homebrew without the need for PSjailbreak-type USB devices.
The bad news for Sony is that the key cannot be changed without hardware modifications - firmware updates are not enough to stop it. Even if it was, it would render current software inoperable.
GeoHot was also responsible for helping crack the iPhone.

Nintendo 3DS gets leaked images and video
Leaked video and pictures of Nintendo's upcoming 3DS have arrived. The media shows that Nintendo have tweaked the final hardware by flattening the Start, Home and Select buttons so that they are flush with the device.
Other than those changes, it is relatively unchanged from the DS. The above leaked video shows it includes a 1,300 mAh battery (compared to the DSi XL's 1,050 mAh battery, the DSi's 840 mAh, the DS Lite's 1,000 mAh, and the DS's 850mAh). The video also shows the differences in size between the 3DS, DSi and DS Lite.
A new feature that the 3DS includes is Virtual Console that allows a user to download Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games, a Tag Mod which lets 3DS owners locate nearby handsets to connect to and exchange data with, a Mii Studio that can automatically create Mii avatars from real photos and also Augmented Reality Games that come preloaded on the system.
3DS owners are also able to tweak the 3D effect for games and content via a slider on the right. The 3DS is also capable of taking standard and 3D pictures with the devices multiple cameras and includes connectivity for 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.

RumorTT: Windows 8 has reached Milestone 2
According to Russian forum Winreview, Microsoft has passed Milestone 2 which means it's on it's way toward Milestone 3. Build numbers also show this, where builds 78xx are supposedly under the Milestone 1 umbrella, with 79xx builds under the Milestone 2 umbrella.
Microsoft are obviously hard at work on the successor to Windows 7, Windows 8 is early in development but is meant to include some very cool stuff like support for USB 3.0, Bluetooth 3.0, facial recognition, stereoscopic 3D, instant on booting, HID, accelerometers, proximity sensors, hard drive encryption, GPS integration, as well as a strong focus on boot time, shut down time, and battery life.
Rumors have also included two user interfaces, a new push for PC gaming (hopefully!) and a sneak peak at CES 2011.

Apple are now worth in excess of $300 billion
Last night Facebook was held on the shoulders of the internet, being bragged that it was worth $50 billion. But it has woken today from it's post-party hangover and not only realised a tooth was missing, a tiger was in the room and that they were about to be punched in the face by Mike Tyson - but Apple had taken over as the new cool kid on the market cap block, now valued at over $300 billion!
This move now makes Apple the second public company with such a high value, second only to Exxon Mobil. Twelve months ago Apple were at the $213 billion market cap, which at the time were only $40 billion behind the great Microsoft. Now they're $60 billion in-front of Microsoft, which is obviously a great achievement.
Are Apple able to take the top spot? Exxon Mobile is currently valued at $375 billion, so at the pace Apple have been going lately - it might not take long if all things go right this year with the next-gen iPad and iPhone launches, things could look very, very good for Apple stock owners.

BitFenix finally coming to the US!
We have talked about some of the cool BitFenix compute cases before here at Tweak. The company has some of the coolest cases that I have seen in a long time. I am particularly fond of the cool Colossus case with the green lights and black housing. That is a sweet case for my next computer. The big problem for geeks in the US has been that the cases weren't offered here.
All that will soon change. BitFenix has announced that staring at 11am on January 10, 2011 it will start taking pre-orders for an "extremely limited" number of computer cases through its new US online store. It's not clear, if the whole line will be offered in small numbers or if only one case will be offered. I would assume that after the initial batch is sold out the company would be trying to get more of the cases available for computer fans in the US.
"After receiving emails almost daily inquiring about BitFenix in the US, we are excited to finally say that both Colossus and Survivor will be available for pre-order," says David Jarlestedt, BitFenix Product Manager. Swann Security unveils new SportsCam waterproof camcorder
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Anyone that is into sports and has tried to film themselves performing their favorite extreme sport knows that taking a normal camcorder on a skiing trip or to a skate park with you is asking for the death of a normal gadget. If you are a swimmer or diver, a normal camera isn't an option at all. Swann Security has all sorts of cameras in its line up and most of them are aimed at home and office security.
The company has announced that it will be showing off a new consumer camera at CES 2011 that is called the SportsCam Waterproof Mini Video Camera. The camera records in relatively low 640 x 480 resolution and comes in a watertight housing. That housing will keep water out down to 65-feet deep and it is also shock proof to prevent the camera for breaking if you drop it or crash. The camera can be mounted to just about anything with several included mounting options.
Those mount options include several Velcro straps, a double clipper, pouch, and several different clips for various mounts. The camera stores video to microSD cards and a single 16GB microSD card is good for five hours of video and the internal rechargeable battery is good for 2.5 hours of recording. The camera will ship in February for $99.

Lexar unveils 128GB and 64GB SDXC cards
Lexar has been making storage cards for cameras and other devices for a long time now. The company has announced a new storage card for SDXC compatible cameras and camcorders that has the highest amount of storage in the industry. The new card is the industry's first 128GB offering. The card also comes in a 64GB SDXC version as well.
Both the 128GB and the 64GB versions of the memory card are speed Class 10 offerings with 133x performance. That means that the cards offer a minimum of 20MB/s data speed. That should make them fast enough for HD video recording and for fast burst shooting. The pro-level cards are aimed at the professional photographer.
As you can imagine, cards with this capacity are far from cheap. When these cards land in Q1 2011 they will be priced at nearly $700 for the 128GB unit and nearly $400 for the 64GB offering. Both will come with software to help you recover deleted images.

Lenovo announces Thinkpad Edge E220 and E240 laptops
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Lenovo's adding quite a few new laptops to their line just in time for CES, and the three that are first off the line are the ThinkPad Edge E220 and E420 as well as the ThinkPad X120e.
The ThinkPad Edge series give you premium design options like a matte finish with metal accents and an infinity screen. The 12.5" E220 and 14" e420 feature the choice of Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, optional mobile broadband and 4G/WiMAX in addition to regular WiFi, and the Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows 7 to speed up boot time by 30 percent on select models with Rapid Drive technology. Models will start at $899 for the E220 and $749 for the E420 and will be available starting in April.
The 11.6" ThinkPad X120e is the ultraportable addition to the ThinkPad lineup and 1" think and starting at under 3lb in weight. This is the first commercial laptop to feature an AMD Fusion E-Series Accelerated Processing Unit (APU). The X120e prices will be starting at less than $400 and will be available in February. Quick Review: Corsair Vengeance Series PC3-12800 8GB Kit
The release of P67 hasn't done much in the way of RAM requirements, which for the most part is great. We say for the most part only because the lack of changes means that there's nothing super exciting about RAM on the new platform.
With that said, though, there's a change when it comes to JEDEC standard; 1600MHz DDR being the stock minimum clock now and CL9 timings also being the minimum at those speeds. Companies aren't going to have an issue, though, as we've been dealing with speeds well above 1600MHz DDR for a long time now.
So the good news is that if you want to upgrade to P67 from your P55 platform, which as we've shown you in our articles on Sandy thus far, would be quite a nice upgrade, you won't need to buy yourself new memory if you're using something decent already. This is great news for people who have invested in more expensive memory.
The first company to bring memory to us for the new P67 platform is Corsair with the Vengeance series. This isn't the first time we've looked at the series. Actually, the last RAM review we did was pretty much the exact same kit, but in triple channel form.
The kit we're looking at today is the CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 which translates to a Corsair Vengeance 8GB PC3-12800 kit. Getting a bit more technical, the kit is a CL9 one with a 9-9-9-24-1T setup at 1.5 volts.
We didn't have any problems at all achieving these speeds on our new P67 Extreme6 ASRock platform via the XMP profile. Once up and running we fired up CPU-Z and you can see our validation here.
While the modules themselves are pretty much identical to the 12GB kit we looked at previously, we of course don't expect the same kind of performance because P67 is a Dual Channel platform unlike X58 which is triple channel. With that said, we fired up AIDA64 Extreme Edition which was formally known as Everest Extreme Edition.
Under AIDA64 we ended up with Read / Write numbers of 18,434 MB/s / 17,570 MB/s which are very impressive. Looking at SiSoftware Sandra, our memory bandwidth numbers are 21,000 MB/s for both Integer and Float.
With default running all good, it was time to see if we could get some more out of the kit. You'll have to excuse us a little as we're new to P67 overclocking and due to CPU overclocking being exceptional in that you use the multiplier, the lack of BCLK adjustment makes memory overclocking a little harder.
Under the BIOS we were limited by our options when it came to memory overclocking. We moved from 1600MHz DDR, though, to 1866MHz DDR leaving all the timings at Auto. We had no problems getting into Windows, but with the timings set at Auto we ended up in Windows at 9-13-13-34-1T at 1.5v. You can see our CPU-Z validation on that here.
Since we were in Windows, it seemed silly to not test the kind of performance we could get out of the kit in this instance. Under AIDA64 we saw our Read / Write numbers improve to 19,806 MB/s / 17,971 MB/s, which is a nice little increase. Under Sandra we saw Integer / Float jump to 23,750 MB/s / 23,800 MB/s.
Since when we moved to AUTO the timings went a little all over the place, we decided to go back into the BIOS and set the timings manually to 9-9-9-24-1T. Our board fired up, but as we started to get into Windows the system automatically rebooted.
We could've stopped there, but instead decided to just loosen the timings up a little, but not quite as much as they were when running AUTO. While we stayed at 1866MHz DDR, we only had to move a little on the timings which you can see in our CPU-Z validation here. You can see we ended up with a 9-10-10-24-1T setup which is only slightly more relaxed than the standard 9-9-9-24-1T setup.
Back in AIDA64 we saw our Read / Write numbers improve again slightly to 20,080 MB/s / 17,970 MB/s and Sandra saw slight improvements in Integer and Float to 24,210 MB/s / 24,200 MB/s.
To achieve the last setup we did bump the voltage from 1.5v to 1.545v which is really nothing. Of course, though, it's something that we have to note. Most people wouldn't have an issue bumping the voltage to that.
In all this is a fantastic kit of RAM if you're looking for something to go in your new P67 based system. Of course, you can use it in a P55 one and overclocking would yield more options as BCLK comes in to play, but if you're looking for a kit to go with your shiny new P67 system and want an 8GB one instead of a boring ol' 4GB one, this is a great purchase.

AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE and Phenom II X4 840 (Socket AM3) CPUs
Introduction
AMD has been around for a long time in one form or another. When I first started working with AMD CPUs they were making 2x86 CPUs under license from Intel. Not too long after that they bought up a small and promising company named NexGen. From there things got interesting.
Before you knew it, AMD had a CPU that simply exploded onto the market and had a little bit of controversy surrounding a commercial put out by AMD at the time. This was the original Slot A Athlon CPU. With this one move (based on the DEC Alpha and in many ways both the EV6 and EV7 bus) AMD had a CPU that pulled them from the "value" market into the hearts of many enthusiasts.
Succeeding the original Athlon was the Opteron and the Athlon 64 which made 64-bit computing a household item. From there AMD began something of a slide when their next CPU offering (the Phenom) was not only delayed, but also had an unfortunate performance issue due to some TLB Errata.
AMD quickly recovered and brought us the Phenom II and Athlon II. These two CPUs have been slowly rebuilding AMD's reputation as a solid CPU designer. While not the first choice of most enthusiasts, AMD has never the less been climbing back into the game with a solid line-up of mainstream and value CPUs that can deliver some serious performance while not breaking the bank.
We have had the chance to try out two new "speed bumps" in the Phenom II line up - the 3.6GHz Phenom II X4 975 BE and the 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 840.

Micron Technology, Inc. today unveiled a new portfolio of the industry's most advanced RealSSDTM solid-state drives (SSDs) for the fast growing flash-based notebook market. A new breed of notebooks are entering the market that have lightweight construction, snappier system responsiveness and a longer lasting battery—all made possible because of the innovations in flash-based storage products.
"SSDs are bringing excitement back into personal computing," said Dean Klein, vice president of memory system development at Micron. "Micron is accelerating this enthusiasm with our new RealSSD portfolio, providing even greater performance and higher capacities than our previous generation SSDs."
The new portfolio is the first SSD product line to incorporate Micron's 25-nanometer (nm) NAND flash technology, creating a broad portfolio of capacities ranging from 64-gigabyte (GB) to 512GB. The drives will be available in 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch form factors. As with its predecessor, the product line also supports the SATA 6Gb/s interface, which opens up the data path between the host processor and the SSD delivering improved overall system responsiveness including faster boot times and speedier application loads. The new drives reach read speeds up to 415 megabytes (MB)/second, which is 17 percent faster than Micron's previous generation drives. With write performance varying by capacity, the new 512GB drive achieves up to 260 MB/second write speeds, which is more than 20 percent faster than the fastest C300 drive. The new SSDs also provide benefits that desktops, workstations and industrial applications can take advantage of including low power consumption, lightweight construction and resistance to shock and vibration.
"At IDC we expect total portable PC SSD shipments to increase significantly every year for the next three years," said Jeff Janukowicz, research manager for Solid State Storage Technologies at IDC. "The use of leading-edge NAND technology and product innovations, such as in Micron's RealSSD drives continue to bring SSDs into the mainstream by enabling higher performance and lower power consumption in a more cost effective solution."
Micron is currently working with notebook manufacturers to qualify its new RealSSD drives under the C400 product name. With samples of the RealSSD C400 drives available now, Micron expects mass production to begin in February.
Bringing the drives to business customers and consumers, Crucial, a division of Micron, will begin selling the portfolio under the name, Crucial® m4 SSD. The Crucial m4 SSD product line is expected to be available online at crucial.com and through select global channel partners in the first quarter of 2011.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology solutions, announced today that it completed development of the industry's first DDR4 DRAM module last month, using 30 nanometer (nm) class process technology.
"Samsung has been actively supporting the IT industry with our green memory initiative by coming up with eco-friendly, innovative memory products providing higher performance and power efficiency every year," said Dong Soo Jun, president, memory division, Samsung Electronics. "The new DDR4 DRAM will build even greater confidence in our cutting-edge green memory, particularly when we introduce four-gigabit (Gb) DDR4-based products using next generation process technology for mainstream application."
The new DDR4 DRAM module can achieve data transfer rates of 2.133 gigabits per second (Gbps) at 1.2V, compared to 1.35V and 1.5V DDR3 DRAM at an equivalent 30nm-class* process technology, with speeds of up to 1.6Gbps. When applied to a notebook, it reduces power consumption by 40 percent compared to a 1.5V DDR3 module.
The module makes use of Pseudo Open Drain (POD), a new technology that has been adapted to high-performance graphic DRAM to allow DDR4 DRAM to consume just half the electric current of DDR3 when reading and writing data.
By employing new circuit architecture, Samsung's DDR4 will be able to run from 1.6 up to 3.2Gbps, compared to today's typical speeds of 1.6Gbps for DDR3 and 800Mbps for DDR2.
Late last month, Samsung provided 1.2V 2 gigabyte (2GB) DDR4 unbuffered dual in-line memory modules (UDIMM) to a controller maker for testing.
Samsung now plans to work closely with a number of server makers to help insure completion of JEDEC standardization of DDR4 technologies in the second half of this year.
Samsung has been leading the advancement of DRAM technology ever since it developed the industry's first DDR DRAM in 1997. In 2001, it introduced the first DDR2 DRAM, and in 2005, announced the first DDR3 DRAM using 80nm-class technology.

The 2011 low power platform (formerly codenamed ?Brazos?) enhances the everyday computing experience and is available beginning today in two APU variations: E-Series and C-Series. These APUs feature the new x86 CPU core codenamed ?Bobcat?. ?Bobcat? is AMD's first new x86 core since 2003 and was designed from the ground up to deliver stellar mobile performance.
The 2011 mainstream platform is primarily intended for performance and mainstream notebooks and mainstream desktops. It will feature the 32nm die A-Series ?Llano? APU, which includes up to four x86 cores and a DirectX 11-capable discrete-level GPU, and is scheduled to ship in the first half of 2011 and appear in products mid-year.
