Microsoft said to unveil new, ARM-friendly Windows at CES :: Posted by THRASHER2
Beside hardware (tablets mostly), Microsoft is claimed to be bringing at CES 2011 a new version of Windows (no, not Windows
The upcoming operating system , which could just be an upgraded Windows Embedded, is supposed to be targeting tablets and other handhelds, and would offer a more complete computing experience.
We'd still like a preview of Windows 8 at CES but and ARM-supporting, fully-fledged Windows would do nicely too.

EVGA adapter provides more power to your PCIe bus :: Posted by THRASHER2
Before officially launching its Intel 6 Series chipset-based motherboards, EVGA has decided to introduce the Power Boost, a little internal adapter that will provide more watts to your PCI-Express bus and thus improve overall system stability.
The Power Boost connects to a MOLEX plug on one end and to a PCIe x1, x4, x8 or x16 slot at the other end, and should not interfere with other components like dual-slot graphics cards. EVGA's offering costs $20 but is not yet available so we all have to try and make due with our unstable systems (BEd: Do I sense sarcasm?).

Sparkle debuts its GeForce GTX 460 SE, calls it 'Sabrina' :: Posted by THRASHER2
Sparkle Computer has today introduced its own GeForce GTX 460 SE card which packs 288 CUDA Cores (336 on the 'regular' GTX 460), GPU/shader/memory clocks of 650/1300/3400 MHz, comes with a custom, dual-slot cooler, and is supposed to be known as Sabrina Edition.
According to Sparkle, the card is named after 'the chief actress in the cognominal movie in the shaping of life and love with full of dreams as the prototype' but really, it's just a GTX 460 SE that wants to feel special.
The new GF104-powered card includes 1GB of GDDR5 memory, has dual-DVI and mini HDMI outputs, makes use of the 'Fuse Function' to prevent damage caused by the unstable voltage of the monitor, and apparently is bundled with a mini HDMI to HDMI cable. Moving on...

Motorola Mobility buys data synchronization :: Posted by THRASHER2
Motorola subsidiary Motorola Mobility has today announced that it acquired, for an undisclosed amount, Silicon Valley start-up Zecter, which is known for two things the ZumoDrive service enabling people to sync, share and store files in the cloud, and the ZumoCast app for personal media streaming.
"Consumers want seamless access to their content and media from wherever they are, while content providers want to ensure that content remains protected and secure," said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services, Motorola Mobility. "We believe that Zecter enables that seamless experience with the necessary security measures, and we are delighted to be able to work with this team."
Zecter's synchronization and streaming technologies will be used to improve Motorola's mobile content experience and the MOTOBLUR service.
ZumoCast and ZumoDrive continue to be available to current users although we can probably agree that the days of the two services are numbered.

Sparkle shows off homebrewed GTX 580 :: Posted by THRASHER2
New in-house designed PCB
Sparkle has shown its own, in-house made, GTX 580 card, dubbed Geforce GTX 580 V-Go. Featuring a blue PCB and purple DVI ouputs, the new card sticks to a pretty good reference cooler and reference clocks.
As noted, Sparkle's own GTX 580 V-GO features all the same outputs so you are looking at two DVI and one HDMI port. It also uses the reference cooler as this one does a pretty good job since it is based on Vapor Chamber technology. The rest of the specs are the same as on reference cards so you get 512 CUDA cores, GPU working at 772MHz, shaders clocked at 1544MHz and 1536MB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 4008MHz and paired up with a 384-bit memory interface.
Unfortunately, Sparkle didn't announce the price tag or the availability date, but it might end up to be a little bit cheaper than the reference card.

Six PCI-Express x16 slots
In keeping with its tradition, EVGA is planning to roll out its own LGA1155, Sandy Bridge-ready and overclocking friendly motherboard, the EVGA P67 Classified.
Featuring a 12-phase power design, recognizable red/black colour scheme and six PCI-Express x16 slots for some CrossfireX and 3-way SLI fun, the EVGA P67 Classified will surely be one of the more interesting P67 based motherboards on the market next in January 2011.
The rest of the specs include two SATA 6Gbps and four SATA 3Gbps ports, Gigabit LAN, 7.1-channel audio and USB 3.0 support. The angled 24-pin, two 8-pin CPU power and additional 4-pin Molex connectors are something that you can certainly expect from EVGA's overclocking ready motherboard.
We are quite sure that EVGA will pair this one with its own overclocking features, something that we have already seen on its previous Classified series motherboards.

Zotac's new GTX 580 Extreme Edition :: Posted by THRASHER2
Only for the Asian market
Expreview managed to score some pictures of the upcoming Zotac GTX 580 Extreme Edition card featuring a non-reference PCB design, 16-phase VRM, high-grade chokes, capacitors, POSCAPs and prodalizers, but unfortunately, we were informed that this one is only for Asian market, at least for now.
Nevertheless, the card features a large aluminum heatsink covering PCB components like MOSFETs and memory chips. The entire card is cooled by a rather large cooler with two 12cm fans. To accommodate the 16-phase VRM, the card has a different PCB which is a bit taller than the reference one, but still needs 6- and 8-pin power connectors.
As noted, this card is for Asian market and it won't show up in Europe or the USA, at least not yet.

Zotac AMP!s its GTX 570 :: Posted by THRASHER2
GPU at 780MHz
Following the announcements of factory overclocked GTX 570 cards by partners, Zotac has launched its own AMP! version. Zotac decided to go for 780MHz clock for the GPU and bundled the card with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands game.
As noted, the card runs at 780MHz for the GF110 GPU, 1560MHz for 480 CUDA cores and 4000MHz for 1280MB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 320-bit memory interface. This is a decent factory overclock since the reference card runs at 732 for GPU, 1436 for shaders and 3800MHz for the same amount of memory.
The new Zotac GTX 570 AMP! uses the same reference cooler which is apparently quite sufficient to keep the temperatures on GF110 GPU in check. The card should be available in retail pretty soon and some already have it for pre-order.

Nvidia GT 540M tested in Acer lappie :: Posted by THRASHER2
Unimpressive performance, but Optimus saves the day
Notebookjournal.de has put the new 15.6-inch Acer Aspire 5742G with Nvidia's GT 540M core through its paces with some interesting results.
The performance doesn't seem to be much better with 400M series parts. It is only marginally faster than its predecessors and it appears the 540M is merely a tuned up core. The GT 445M ends up a bit faster in some tests, so it appears that the GT 540M is the direct successor to the GT 435M.
However, despite an unimpressive performance gain, the 540M has an ace up its sleeve thanks to Nvidia's Optimus graphics switching technology. Optimus allows the new Aspire to power down the graphics core and squeeze out a bit more battery life. It also keeps the chassis cooler.

POV/TGT rolls out fastest GTX 570 :: Posted by THRASHER2
The Beast at 841MHz
Point of View and its TGT Tuning team have rolled out the fastest card based on Nvidia's GTX 570 GPU, the POV/TGT Geforce GTX 570 "Beast". Running at an impressive 841MHz core clock, the new GTX 570 will be available in two versions depending on the choice of the cooler.
As noted, POV/TGT managed to get its cream of the crop GTX 570 version to work at an impressive 841MHz core clock, 1682MHz shader clock, while memory ended up at 3960MHz. This is quite an achievement considering that the reference card works at 732MHz for the GPU, 1464MHz for shaders and 3800MHz for the same 1280MB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 320-bit memory interface.
The new POV/TGT GTX 570 Beast will be available in two versions, depending on the cooler. The first one features a reference cooler and is a bit cheaper than the second version that features a 9mm slim-line AquaCopper water cooling block.
The GTX 570 already impressed us with it performance and price back when we reviewed it, and PVO/TGT now made a deal even better. The water-cooled GTX 570 Beast will end up with a suggested retail price of €499, while the air-cooled (reference cooler) models has a suggested retail price of €449.
Both cards are announced to be in retail/e-tail pretty soon and we managed to find the air-cooled one listed in EU for as low as €443.

MSI's P67 motherboard supports 32GB of memory :: Posted by THRASHER2
The P67A-GD65
Although it sounds like overkill, it is nice to know that MSI's upcoming P67A-GD65 Sandy Bridge motherboard will support up to 32GB of memory.
What you see below is a CPU-Z screenshot from MSI's facebook page. It shows the MSI P67A-GD65 running Intel's Core i7-2600K ES CPU and paired up with 32GB of system memory. Although it is not clear which memory and at what specs it works, it will be clear once Intel officially launches its Sandy Bridge CPUs.
Hopefully, we'll see at least a couple of such kits from the usual suspects like Kingston, OCZ, Corsair and others, although we're not expecting miracles when it comes to prices.

Nvidia's "GTX 560" detailed :: Posted by THRASHER2
384 SPs, 256-bit, 820MHz GPU clock
The recent GPU-Z screenshot of the upcoming GTX 560 made us ask around and we can now report that the mentioned specifications are on target, i.e. those are the same that we heard from our sources. The new "GTX 560" is based on GF114 GPU that we already wrote about here, has 384 CUDA cores and should launch sometime in January.
Nvidia's new mid-range card has 384 Stream Processors and runs at 820MHz for the GPU, 1640MHz for shaders and 4000MHz for 1024MB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The GTX 560 name isn't carved in stone and although partners are internaly refering to it as the GTX 560, Nvidia didn't officially announce the name and the card could easily become the GTX 570 SE for that matter.
Of course, these specs are what partners got from Nvidia. Unfortunately, the card is scheduled for January next year so we'll have to wait a while before we can talk about concrete information. You can check out the original GPU-Z screenshot here.

Point of View Mobii 10.2-inch tablet hits Austria :: Posted by THRASHER2
Ditech.at sells it for €299
Point of View's Mobii 10.2-inch tablet has been announced a while back and it looks like it is currently available at Ditech.at, at a special price of just €299, at least for today.
We were asking around for this tablet since it has been announced, and it looks like it is selling quite good, at least on those places that managed to get some of the first shipments. It is mostly selling in Netherlands and Spain, and there are some stores there that managed to get quite a few of units but they are well.
In case you missed it, the Mobii 10.2-inch tablet is multi-touch screen tablet based on Nvidia's Tegra 250 chip and runs on Android 2.2 OS. The only downside is that you don't get access to Android Marketplace, but we guess that there will be a hack or two available pretty soon.
Ditech currently doesn't have it in Germany but there are at least a couple of these devices in Vienna and other cities in Austria, of course it is selling out quite fast considering that is currently selling at a lower €299 price.

Gainward GTX 570 Golden Sample Goes Like Hell reviewed :: Posted by THRASHER2
Review: It really does go like hell @ fudzilla.com
Today we’ll talk about Gainward‘s GTX 570 Golden Sample Goes Like Hell, one of the few top cards in 2010.
The graphics card is based on Nvidia Fermi architecture, meaning the GF110 chip which is NvidiaÂ’s most advanced graphics chip to date. GTX 570 offers plenty of performance in the high-end segment and the only faster card is the GTX 580, which is again based on the GF110. The opposing red camp offers the new HD 6970, which is comparable to reference GTX 570 cards.
Of course we canÂ’t forget the retired GTX 480, which was the fastest NvidiaÂ’s single-GPU in the last generation, but the GTX 570 sent it to an early retirement. Both cards feature similar gaming performance, but the GTX 570 comes with more efficient GPU and superior thermals.
Anyone familiar with Gainward knows by now that Goes Like Hell is a synonym for speed. Apart from the factory overclock, GTX 570 GS GLH boasts special twin-fan cooling and great video-output panel setup.
So, the card runs at 800MHz for the GPU, 1600MHz for shaders and 4000MHz (effectively) for the memory. Just to remind you, reference clocks stand at 732MHz for the GPU, 1462MHz for shaders and 3800MHz for memory.

Palm to show off new Pad at CES :: Posted by THRASHER2
To be called the PalmPad product family
Palm will being getting deep into the tablet game with a line of new products that are part of their new PalmPad family. The new offerings will be shown at CES by Palm. The designs are said to be derived from hardware designed by HP for a number of tablet products that the company never launched.
The initial offering will be three models that will all be using the Palm WebOS version 2.5.1. A fourth model will also be available, but it will not be shown as CES as it is a custom high-volume production model targeted for schools and universities.
The retail consumer version of the PalmPads will offer Sprint WiMax 4G connectivity in addition to WiFi support, as well as dual cameras with LED flash, USB 3.0 support and mini HDMI support. Size and features vary by device, but the screen size is expected to be between 8.9 to 9.7 inches, depending on the model.
The PalmPad will arrive in March 2011 and HP will also be offering a number of both Microsoft and WebOS designs in early 2011. We are told that while the PalmPad does incorporate some ideas from the never-launched Folo device, the PalmPad is a new unique offering. We are told that Sprint will be one of the first partners to carry the device when it is released in March, which makes sense since the PalmPads offer WiMax support.

Activision Blizzard tries to draw in EA into court battle :: Posted by THRASHER2
Subpoena of Duty
Activision Blizzard wants to add rival EA as a defendant in a lawsuit against two videogame makers who created Activision's hit Call of Duty.
Activision has asked for permission to add EA to a lawsuit Activision filed earlier this year against Jason West and Vince Zampella. West and Zampella were cofounders of Activision's Infinity Ward, one of two studios that produce Call of Duty. The filing seeks $400 million in damages from EA for allegedly interfering with the employment contracts West and Zampella had with Activision, in an effort to sabotage the success of Call of Duty.
West and Zampella formed a new development studio called Respawn Entertainment and that EA will publish its games. They then sued Activision in March, alleging that the games publisher cheated them out of royalties from Call of Duty and wrongfully terminated them. Activision later countersued. A counter-suit is a bit like counter-strike where the biggest guns cost the most.
The new complaint alleges EA undermined Activision because its products haven't performed well in the market. It conspired with West and Zampella to break these contracts, the suit claims.

Call of Duty: Black Ops sales hit $1bn mark :: Posted by THRASHER2
So much for Hollywood blockbusters
According to sales figures released by Activision Blizzard the latest installment of the Call of Duty franchise has already netted more than $1 billion in revenue.
Call of Duty: Black Ops has managed to surpass the $1 billion mark in just six weeks of sales, a feat unparalleled in the video game industry and rarely witnessed in Hollywood. In fact, no game has ever come close to such sales results and very few blockbuster movies can boast such numbers, and most of them were pants.
However, this is hardly surprising considering the fact that any decent game features a better script and more realistic dialogues than a Michael Bay movie. We can only imagine what would happen if a scantily clad Megan Fox appeared in the next CoD game.

Gainward rolls out its GTX 570 Phantom :: Posted by THRASHER2
Massive cooler and factory overclock
Already pixellized and detailed earlier this week, Gainward has now officially released its GF110 based GTX 570 Phantom card. Featuring a factory overclock and massive triple-slot cooler, the new Phantom GTX 570 has already gathered a lot of attention from the enthusiast market.
As noted, the new GTX 570 Phantom card features a triple-slot cooler that has six heatpipes paried up with a large area heatsink with copper base and a total of 44 aluminum fins. This massive heatsink is cooled by no less than three 80mm PWM fans. According to Gainward, this cooler is enough to keep the GTX 570 Phantom 15°C cooler and 58 percent quieter than the reference card.
Unfortunately, Gainward decided to keep the factory overclock at a rather modest level so the card works at 750MHz for the GPU, 1500MHz for shaders and 3900MHz for 1280MB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 320-bit memory interface. We are quite sure that with a such massive cooler the GTX 570 Phantom can certainly be overclocked even higher as we already had Gainward's GTX 570 GS GLH card that works at 800MHz for the GPU.
The card needs one 6-pin and one 8-pin power connector in order to work and has two DVI, an HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Unfortunately, the card is yet to be listed and Gainward didn't announce the price or the availability date.
