Blu-ray may not seem much nowadays since double-layer disc can only hold as much as 50GB data. While the optical format made for the HD era has yet to become as successful as DVD, Blu-ray is still being pushed to beyond 100GB. The new Blu-ray XL - initially allowing write once options for 100GB and 128GB, and re-writeable capability on 100GB discs - is getting support from Buffalo. Buffalo's latest BDXL external burner (BRXL-6U2) is the first of its kind. Though, it's only capable to writing only 4x on 4-layer and 3-layer BD-R XL (128GB); and 2x on 3-layer BD-RE XL. These speeds are nothing to write home about as BD-R hits 12x easily with this USB 3.0 writer. It's a good thing that the Buffalo BDXL USB 2.0 burner is backward compatible with current Blu-ray standard. We are sure this writer will gets some attention from the backup and data archiving market, just not from the rest of the consumer world. There's no pricing nor shipping date available from Buffalo. Here's hoping the price tag doesn't scare people off.
