New Bungie project will have a new engine :: Posted by THRASHER2
Favoring a from-scratch solution rather than licensing
Even though the final Bungie chapter has been written with the studioÂ’s contribution to the Halo franchise in its release of Reach, despite all of the acclaim that the studio is receiving many already want to talk about whatÂ’s next.

So far, we do now that the next project from Bungie will not be Halo-related and we know that it will be multiplatform, which means that it will be the studioÂ’s first release for the PlayStation 3. We also know that Activision will be selling the title when it is released. Actually, that isnÂ’t really much to go on.

We are learning now that the new project that the studio is working on will be on a new engine built from the ground up. This means that the company will not be taking advantage of some of the engines that are available through licensing from a number of sources. Apparently, the company didnÂ’t really consider licensing an engine technology, as that just is not what Bungie is about.

The new Bungie engine (which apparently has a name we havenÂ’t found out yet) has been in development for some time and is in a stage where the engine is at the end of pre-production. With the release of Reach, more and more of the studio will be rolling onto the new project and it is expected that the majority will be working on the new project within weeks.

Sources tell us that Bungie is planning to announce their new project at CES next year during the presentations of Microsoft or Sony. At least this is the current plan, according to sources. While a number of theories and supposed leaks have tried to pin down exactly what Bungie is working on for their first release, at least right now no one is talking specifics.

Hot off the release of Reach, BungieÂ’s next project could be one of the biggest announcements that players will be looking forward to next year. It is expected that the actual title could be released in late 2011, but a 2012 release is actually more likely.

AT&T to offer 9800 in Red & White :: Posted by THRASHER2
Late November release expected
It seems that despite all of the negative press that has been following the BlackBerry Torch 9800 around, AT&T and RIM are not ready to throw in the towel just yet. In fact, AT&T has been turning up the advertising machine in conjunction with RIM in a series of ads showing off the 9800. Apparently it is working, as our sources tell us that sales are not as flat as they had been, although still far from what RIM was expecting.

In addition to the sales of the Torch 9800 picking up, AT&T will apparently be the first carrier to offer the Torch 9800 in colors. A red and white version of the 9800 is expected for a late November release, but some are suggesting that it could arrive as soon as mid-November. Sources tell us that the configuration of the 9800 will be the same; the only difference is the color. The red version looks closest to the current black released version, while the white version is a bit more adventurous with white almost everywhere except the screen, and this includes a white keyboard.

There is no word yet if other carriers will be lucky enough to get some colors for their 9800s, but we suspect that will be on the agenda for RIM after the AT&T release in November.

Black Ops servers will cost PC players :: Posted by THRASHER2
Dedicated server program run by GameServers.com
Call of Duty: Black Ops players on the PC will have dedicated servers to play on, but apparently Activision has ripped a page out of the Electronic Arts playbook and has moved to a server provider model, which will see GameServers.com as the exclusive provider of servers (both ranked and unranked) for Black Ops.

The news hit today that GameServers.com is already starting to take pre-orders for servers both ranked and unranked. In the U.S. players will be able to get a ranked Black Ops server for $14.95 per month or an unranked Black Ops server for .99 cents per slot with a 24-slot max.

The company is offering locations in Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia, so it would appear that they have a number of locations from which to serve up the Black Ops action for PC players. The announcement of the dedicated server provider program for Black Ops now could cast into doubt the possibility of public release of the server files to the general public.

Currently, no additional details have been released, but our sources tell us that with the prices that GameServers.com is charging, no one is getting rich on this offering. As another competing provider that we spoke with told us, “The cost of the servers and the bandwidth is, of course, high to run these types of FPS gaming servers; and at the pricing they are charging it is difficult to see how they are going to make much money offering it.”

Treyarch has claimed that the decision to go with an exclusive provider gives the company better control to deal with cheaters and offers better security. The rental servers will all offer those that purchase them the ability to kick, ban and configure a number of the settings. Ranked servers will have a set configuration that customers will be unable to modify.

Google fires internal engineer for accessing private data :: Posted by THRASHER2
Elite technical member harasses minors, violates privacy
In the web economy of 2010, the amount of Google accessing personal data amounts to just over 180 million people per month. As the second most trusted brand in the United States in 2010 next to Walmart, Google has garnered the trust of hundreds of millions of users to safeguard personal data and to keep private communications under high-grade security mechanisms.

Earlier today, Gawker Media published an alarming report regarding an inside breach from company headquarters, where former 27-year old Google engineer David Barksdale allegedly used his internal clearances to access private Gmail data and Gtalk communication logs so that "he could spy on and harass people." Nevertheless, Barksdale's contraventions included violating the privacy of four minors during his employment, whom he met through a technology group in the Seattle area while working as a Site Reliability Engineer at Google's Kirkland, Washington office.

According to sources close to TechCrunch, one privacy breach involved a 15-year old boy who he had befriended. Barksdale tapped into call logs from Google Voice after the boy refused to state the name of his new girlfriend. After accessing the boy's account to retrieve her name and phone number, Barksdale taunted the boy and threatened to call her.

In other cases involving minors of both genders, Barksdale accessed Google account contact lists and chat transcripts, and in one case had even quoted from a girl's IM chatlog that he had accessed behind her back. According to Gawker, he had also unblocked himself from a Gtalk contact list even though the minor in question had taken steps to end communications with the Google engineer.

Best Buy to sell iPad at all stores :: Posted by THRASHER2
Could be in response to adding Kindle
Best Buy has confirmed that they will be adding the Apple iPad to their inventory in all U.S. stores. The news isnÂ’t really surprising, considering that the company has been a partner with Apple for some time; and Best Buy recently announced that it would be offering the Amazon Kindle for sale this holiday season.

The iPads will be available in all U.S. stores starting on September 26th. The company has decided to stock both the Wi-Fi and 3G configuration, which is perhaps a bit of a surprise considering the additional cost that the 3G models tack on to the price tag of the iPad.

The news is good for Apple, as it hopes to move more iPads heading into this holiday season. Surprisingly, the electronic book craze seems to have started to blossom and many analysts seem to agree that the iPad has had an impact on the growth in this market space.

In addition to the iPad and other eBook readers, a number of other tablet options are in the pipeline from a several other sources. Apple might be feeling the need to grab as much of this market share as quickly as it can before more competitors move into this space; and there is no better way to do this than to get the iPad into more mass market locations such as Best Buy.

StarCraft II cheaters to be dealt with :: Posted by THRASHER2
Blizzard to use the ban hammer soon
Are you one of those accounts that have been identified by Blizzard as using unauthorized hacks or mods to cheat at StarCraft II? Well, Blizzard takes cheating seriously, and they have issued a warning to cheaters that they are going to deal with the behavior. ‘Dealing with it’ likely means (at the very least) account suspensions for those tagged for bending the rules.

Blizzard has reminded players of StarCraft II that, as with Warcraft, they are not kidding and will use the ban hammer to make their point; this means that banned players will not be able to log into their battle.net accounts and thus they will not be able to play the game.

Of course, using hacks or modifications of any type is a violation of the battle.net agreement and violates Blizzard policy. Playing StarCraft II means you need to be playing the game with a vanilla install of the gaming client; doing otherwise will bring the wrath of Blizzard upon you.

Sources suggest that Blizzard will be moving quickly in the next couple of days to deal with cheaters. If you donÂ’t want to get banned, you had best turn over a new leaf and stop cheating; or face the ban hammer. It is your choice.

Zacate Fusion works at 1.6GHz :: Posted by THRASHER2
500MHz DirectX 11 graphics inside
We were lucky to find out that the demo unit that AMD showed to various journalists at a hotel near the Moscone center works at 1.6GHz.

This is a dual core Bobcat based CPU with Radeon 5500 equivalent graphics, 18W TPD and at least the prototype shown at the hotel here, runs at 1.6GHz.

Interestingly enough this is the exact same clock as the most prolific Atom models and Zacate actually should perform better than an Atom, ending up closer to Pentium and Core i3 notebooks. The graphics part works at 500MHz which is a much more modest speed than the one that we expect from Sandy Bridge, but then again, Sandy Bridge should be a higher performance part, something that is out of ZacateÂ’s league.

These might not be the final clocks but since the CPU should ship to partners in Q4 2010, this should be very close to the final clock, although it is currently impossible to confirm whether 1.6GHz is the final clock. At least now you have an idea about ZacateÂ’s clock speeds. Naturally Ontario will have to get a lower clock to maintain its 9W TDP.

Sandy Bridge GPU gets disabled with discrete GPU :: Posted by THRASHER2
One or the other
WeÂ’ve learned one more about IntelÂ’s Sandy Bridge CPU and its more interesting graphics part. Sandy Bridge graphics support dual displays, but once you plug in a discrete graphics card in PCIe slot, the Sandy Bridge magic will simply shut down.

At this time, we are not aware of any chance that Intel gets some kind of hybrid mode and use its own Sandy Bridge graphics for non-graphics intensive tasks and then use the discrete graphics for the graphics intensive ones. So, graphics lovers who need more performance than what integrated graphics deliver will be safe, new six series chipsets do have support for external graphics, and some companies might even have dual slots for SLI / Crossfire system.

GigabyteÂ’s GA P67A-UD7 board will be the one to support both Crossfire and SLI. We wish Intel could come up with hybrid graphics and simply shuts down discrete graphics cards when we donÂ’t need them, Nvidia and AMD already offer such technologies.

4 PCIe slots for lot of SLI/CF

We managed to score some pictures of GigabyteÂ’s latest P67-based Sandy Bridge motherboard dubbed Gigabyte GA P67A-UD7.

The board is black, made with enthusiasts in mind and it comes with 24-phase power VRMs designed for dual power switching. It supports only Socket 1155 Sandy Bridge based CPUs and the board is based on the P67 chipset, IntelÂ’s high end chipset for these CPUs.

It supports dual channel memory DDR3 of course as well as SATA 3.0. It does support USB 3.0 but via an external chip, as USB 3.0 is not supported in 6-series chipsets. LetÂ’s not forget about the four PCIe slots for three-way SLI and three-way Crossfire that will come in handy to many graphics users.

The board also has two LAN ports, SPDIF, four external USBs that can power your devices, Optical out, and 5.1 analog connectors. This is what the board looks like.

Extreme Engineering is releasing the XPedite553 conduction-cooled or air-cooled 3U CompactPCI single board computer based on Freescale Semiconductor's dual-core QorIQ P2020 processor. The computer is being designed for the space, weight, and power-constrained military.

Basically it is an embedded computing board which has two 1.2 GHz PowerPC e500 cores; as much as four gigabytes of DDR3-800 ECC SDRAM, 16 gigabytes of NAND flash, and 256 megabytes of redundant NOR flash.

There is also an XMC/PrPMC site; two Gigabit Ethernet ports, two serial ports, and one USB port; and software support that includes Green Hills INTEGRITY Board Support Package (BSP), Wind River VxWorks, and Linux.

They will be available in air-cooled, commercial version and a rugged, conduction-cooled versions. They are tested for shock, but apparently not awe, which is supposed to be a big thing in the US military.

Intel investigating mind reading phones :: Posted by THRASHER2
Context aware
Chipzilla's top boffin Justin Rattner, has been showing off a new form of "context-aware computing" which he thinks is becoming more of a reality with the rise of mobile gear. The idea is that the devices could be doing things with that data such as predicting what you might do next and offering suggestions.

According to AP, he showed off a prototype application Intel worked on with Fodor's Travel. It learns what types of foods you like to eat and what types of attractions you like to visit, based on searches you type into the phone or locations identified using GPS.

He said that the challenge is to training computers to analyse data from "hard sensors" which measure location, motion, voice patterns, and temperature and the like. You then combine these with data from "soft sensors" such as calendar appointments and web browsing history and divide by your shoe size.

This will give your mobile the appearance that it knows what you will want for dinner or watch on TV. Of course this would be a brilliant thing for a hacker to target.

AMD outs Catalyst 10.9 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Available through Steam
AMD has released Catalyst 10.9 drivers packed with several performance tweaks, but few new features.

Stalker: Call of Pripyat will see a performance boost of up to 20 percent for HD 5800 users, while HD 5700 users will get a performance increase of up to 12 percent.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena should also run a bit smoother, both on 5000-series boards and the venerable HD 4800 series. Several fixes and catalyst application profiles have also been included in the new driver.

AMD has also announced a partnership with Valve, so the new drivers should be available through Steam as well.

AMD Barts specs leaked :: Posted by THRASHER2
256-bit bus, 960 shaders
Chinese tech site Chiphell has leaked an interesting slide featuring full AMD Barts specs and the numbers look impressive.

The new Barts series should succeed Juniper-based HD 5770 and HD 5750 boards, but it will deliver a significant performance boost. The biggest difference is the transition to a 256-bit memory bus, which will provide quite a bit more bandwidth than the 128-bit Juniper series. Both boards should feature 1GB of memory, but weÂ’re still not sure about memory clocks, as weÂ’re getting some mixed information.

Barts XT will feature 12 SIMDs, 960 shaders, 48 texture units and 32 ROPs. For comparison, Juniper XT packs 800 shaders and 40 texture units, so Barts will have 20 percent more of everything. The core should end up clocked at 850MHz and the TDP is rated at over 150W, which is quite a bit more than the HD 5770.

Barts PRO packs 800 shaders, 40 texture units and 32 ROPs, much like the current Juniper XT, but it will also have a wider 256-bus. It will be clocked between 700MHz and 725MHz and its TDP should end up below 150W.

AMD is pitting both boards against NvidiaÂ’s GTX 460: Barts PRO will take on the 768MB version of NvidiaÂ’s GTX 460, while Barts XT should fight the 1GB version. Judging by the spec, Barts boards should be able to outperform the GTX 460 and we wouldn't be surprised if they match HD 5830 or even 5850 performance in some scenarios, thanks to higher clocks and the 256-bit bus.

Intel overclocks Sandy to 4.9GHz :: Posted by THRASHER2
Using a stock cooler
Intel has shown off the overclocking potential of its upcoming Sandy Bridge processor to a group of journalists at the IDF.

The sample in question was a K-series part, with an unlocked multiplier and Intel managed to push it all the way to 4.9GHz on air cooling. However, Intel did not disclose the stock clock of the processor used in the demo.

An Intel rep told journalists that the OCed sample managed to outperform a 12-core Opteron in Cinebench, which bodes quite well for Intel, although it sounds a bit overly optimistic.

VR-Zone believes that Intel used a Core i7 2600K, with a stock clock of 3.4GHz, so it turns out that the CPU was overclocked by 45 percent with a box cooler. With aftermarket coolers, the processor should be able to go over 5GHz.

Abu Dhabi spends $7 billion on chip plant :: Posted by THRASHER2
Begins production in 2015
The Abu Dhabi Government-owned Advanced Technology Investment Company is spending a whopping $7bn building its first microchip manufacturing plant. The company selected a site for the plant near Abu Dhabi International Airport and it claims it will be the first microchip factory in the Middle East when it begins production in 2015.

ATICÂ’s is behind the Globalfoundries microchip business which was an AMD spin off. It has already invested $3.6bn expanding that business improving chip-making plants in Germany and the US.

In March, ATIC paid AMD $2.1bn for a 65.8 per cent stake in Globalfoundries. While ATICÂ’s stake has since grown to 73 per cent since March, the spokesman said it did not intend to take 100 per cent ownership of Globalfoundaries.

Reach launch numbers are impressive :: Posted by THRASHER2
$200 million in sales the first 24 hours
Microsoft has to be happy to know that Halo still has it with Xbox 360 gamers, and it delivered on launch day. While all of the numbers are not in, it is known that Halo: Reach generated over $200 million in sales within the first 24 hours of launch. This number makes Reach the largest single entertainment release this year that surpasses all games released so far this year. It also surpassed the day one sales of Halo 3, which only were able to rack up $170 million in the first 24 hours of release.

The $200 million in first-day sales puts Microsoft well on track to beat the first-week sales of Halo 3, which was $300 million. While sales estimates of actual numbers sold are still sketchy at this point, analysts that we have spoken with expect Reach to continue to have significant sales momentum for the month of September, with sales estimates for this month alone expected to be between 3.5 and 4 million copies sold.

In addition to the sales of the game itself, Microsoft is also expected to get a significant surge in console sales of Sony for this period. It is expected that the new Limited Edition Halo Reach console could, in fact, sell out. In addition, the Reach wireless controller and headset are also expected to enjoy significant sales.

Microsoft will continue to celebrate Halo during the month of September with massive advertising to ensure maximum visibility to continue to stimulate sales.
