USB 3.0 Sees Certified Product List Soar Beyond 100
Recently, we have noticed more and more USB 3.0 products hitting the market, or at least hitting a product roadmap. It definitely took some time for the protocol to gain a lot of industry support, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that USB 2.0 is still largely "good enough" for many tasks. For example, mice and keyboards won't need USB 3.0 right away; the only major product lines that can really take advantage of USB 3.0 are storage and streaming applications, where bandwidth is crucial. But now, the

Did Steve Jobs Unleash His Inner Ninja?
Considering the original source is a tabloid, albeit, a Japanese one, we have our doubts on this story. Still, Bloomberg has reported that Steve Jobs was stopped when exiting Japan in July because he had ninja throwing stars (shuriken) in his carry-on baggage.

The report came in SPA! magazine, Bloomberg reported. According to the story, Jobs vowed to never return to Japan. A reminder should be issued that Jobs doesn't fly coach; this was his own private plane, too.

That fact was supposedly noted by Steve Jobs as well. Reportedly, Jobs told authorities that wouldn’t make sense for a person to try to hijack his own plane (which is the only part of this report that really makes sense).

Apparently, though, Kansai airport, where Jobs was flying out of after a family vacation, doesn't have different rules for private planes. The airport confirmed an incident, but not the incident, not noting the passenger name.
Takeshi Uno, a spokesman at Kansai airport, said a passenger using a private jet was stopped at the end of July for carrying shuriken, the Japanese word for Ninja throwing stars. The passenger, whom Uno declined to identify because of the airport’s privacy policy, threw away the blades, he said. The airport doesn’t have separate boarding arrangements for private-jet users, Uno said.
Seriously, Steve, a ninja wouldn't have been caught this way. Your sensei needs to help you to brush up on your skills.

Kingston's First USB 3.0 Flash Drive, Up To 64GB In Size
Just recently the USB-IF made an announcement that over 100 USB 3.0 devices had become certified, and while we aren't certain if this Kingston drive made the cut, it's definitely on the list. Even if unofficially. Kingston, a major player in the memory and storage business, has just revealed their latest USB thumb drive, and it's a big one. Not physically, but internally.

The new DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 is a USB 3.0 hard drive with plenty of space. It's one of the few 64GB thumb drives out that can also offer USB 3.0 transfer rates. It also marks the very first USB 3.0 flash drive for Kingston, which is definitely an important milestone. We're hoping that many more will follow in the months to come, as this one has a read speed of 80MB/sec and a write speed of 60MB/sec.

If you need a smaller version, it's also available in 16GB and 32GB sizes. Pricing is $89 for the 16GB model, $138 for the 32GB model and $270 for the 64GB model.

Kingston Digital Launches USB 3.0 Flash Drive

DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Supports Fast Transfer Rates

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Kingston Digital, Inc., the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced it is shipping its first USB 3.0 Flash drive. The DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 has a read speed of 80MB/sec. and a write speed of 60MB/sec. It is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities. The combination of speed and size makes it ideal for data backup or fast transferring of large files including music, photos and videos. To ensure backwards compatibility, Kingston is also including a Y cable as some USB 2.0 ports require it to initialize USB 3.0 drives.

"USB 3.0 is the next major milestone in Flash memory for USB products and Kingston wants to have a solution in the marketplace for early adopters," said Andrew Ewing, USB business manager, Kingston. "The DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 is our first USB 3.0 Flash drive offering and is designed for enthusiasts who like to embrace new technology before it goes mainstream."

During internal testing, a 1 hour 44 minute movie (3.9GB) was written to the drive in 1 minute 13 seconds. Similarly, a 2 hour 23 minute DVD (4.4GB) transferred to the drive at a fast 1 minute 23 seconds(+).

AMD's Impressive Zacate Integrated Fusion CPU Demo and Potential Benchmark Hijinks?
AMD always hosts an event in the shadow of Intel's Developer Forum, so it wasn't surprising to hear the company was demoing its upcoming Zacate processor this week. Zacate is the codename associated with AMD's 18W dual-core APU and will target the $500 notebook market. The second chip, Ontario, is a 9W APU that'll chase after Atom's business. According to AMD's Director of Fusion Marketing, John Taylor, Zacate-class APUs are ideal platforms for what he calls "no-compromise cloud computing." Why's that? He's glad you asked.
Increasingly, we go online for collaboration and social interaction...Nowhere is this more evident than on social networking sites. These sites...often requirEmail quite a bit of processing power both in the cloud and on the client. The client-side processing is in fact increasing as the experience becomes more visually engaging, in the browser and the internet applications, and in the media players.

It is because of that balanced cloud computing need: low power to stay connected longer, with enough local visual compute power for media rich activities, that “Zacate” is poised to be a fantastic no-compromise mainstream platform and ideal for cloud computing with highly-mobile form factors.
Taylor isn't just talking about Zecate as a client-side APU; he's coyly hinting that AMD's new low-power wunderkind will perform quite effectively in cloud server clusters. The IDF demo, however, wasn't just about words; AMD had testbeds ready to demo Zecate's performance against Intel's Core i5. Here's where things get...questionable.

First, there's AMD Space Command, an unreleased HTML5-based title written by AMD. According to this gem of a title, the Core i520M maintains 23 fps while the Zacate consistently delivers 38-40 fps. There's every reason to stare dubiously at this benchmark, but the performance gap isn't crazy. Intel's integrated GPUs have long been the ill-fated henchmen to AMD's tank of ill-tempered sea bass, so there's nothing all that strange about Zacate's GPU outperforming Intel's Core i5.

AMD also includes comparisons between Zacate and Core i5 in City of Heroes: Going Rogue and in the psychedelic browser benchmark. According to AMD, Zacate is ~10x faster in Psychedelic and substantially faster in CoH:GR. The problem here is that the Core i5's browser benchmark score is exceedingly low relative to what other individuals have seen using the same test on older Intel hardware. As for Going Rogue, earlier AMD blog posts specifically note that the game has been optimized to run on ATI graphics hardware. That doesn't change the fact that Zecate may genuinely outperform Core i5, but we'd have preferred to see a neutral title as well.

While there's no proof that AMD sabotaged the Intel system (there could be an issue with the IE9 preview platform), the specialized nature and limited scope of the tests the company did show leaves us unable to conclude much of anything about Zacate. One thing we'd love to know is the extent to which the various tests rely on CPU performance. None of the tests AMD demonstrated were overtly CPU-centric. AMD has a history of skirting such tests with its existing products; omitting numbers for Zacate could be an early sign that new chip lags the Core i5 in CPU performance. That said, AMD seems to be driving the graphics point home firmly with respect to Zecate.

Veebeam Introduces Wireless USB Media Streamer
This strange, strange looking device actually looks more sophisticated than it actually is. It's not a traditional media streamer; rather, it's a Wireless USB based product that simply creates a wireless link between your PC and your television. This obviously has pros and cons, but Veebeam is hoping you pay more attention to the former.

Unlike a Roku box, which is wired directly to your HDTV and received content from the Internet, the Veebeam box relies on your PC's web browser to stream content, and then it sends that information wirelessly to your television over the Wireless USB protocol. It's nice for those who simply need to stream everything, but Wireless USB isn't known for having an incredible amount of bandwidth, so streaming 1080p may be a problem. That said, Veebeam is offering two units: an SD version with a composite output, and the HD version which has HDMI and digital audio (along with 2 USB ports).

The good news is that it's fully compatible with Windows and OS X, and it's pretty portable in case you want to take your laptop and use it as a media player on vacation. And for $99, it's hard to argue with. It's available now in the U.S., UK and Europe.

Laptop Entertainment, Supersized to the TV

Veebeam is Launched In the US and Europe at $99 USD/99 GBP/109 EUR

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and LONDON, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Veebeam, a wireless company dedicated to bringing Internet video content to every TV, has announced today at the DEMO Fall 2010 conference in Santa Clara, a revolutionary 1080p HD media player named Veebeam that offers the easiest, most affordable, way to wirelessly stream anything from your laptop to your TV.  Internet-delivered movies, sports websites, photos and more can now be shared on any HDTV.

"Veebeam is the only product on the market that doesn't pre-define the viewer's experience. It is what we like to define as 'content agnostic' - anything from the Internet can be viewed on the TV.  The market interest has been incredible – Veebeam is going to enhance home entertainment, and help people to make the most of the Internet," said Andrew Vought, Veebeam CEO.

In a world where individuals use the Internet on a daily basis to access endless entertainment options but are limited by the small screen and weak speakers of a laptop, Veebeam gives every broadband consumer the freedom to share their favorite content with others directly on their TV's big screen.  No other product on the market offers an equivalent high-quality experience at such an affordable price, enabling the consumer to maximize the investment in their laptop without replacing their current TV.

In order to address consumer need, Veebeam is built to allow users to play any TV shows and movies from popular streaming sites without restrictions. Aside from being content agnostic, the device is also built on industry standard technology and works on most modern PCs and Macs.  The key features are:

    * Easy to use – Just plug the Veebeam antenna into a laptop's USB port and it begins streaming the desktop to the TV. Depending on what's being viewed, users can switch between the 'Screencasting' mode, best for sharing websites or photos, and the 'Play-To' mode, to enjoy highest video quality and the ability to multi-task.
    * Affordable – Starting at $99 USD/99 GBP/109 EUR, Veebeam lets users make the most of their existing HDTV and laptop.
    * Looks great – Veebeam outputs up to 1080p video. Digital media files have never looked better on an HDTV.
    * Compatible – Veebeam software works on laptops running Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Mac OSX 10.5 & 10.6.
    * Plays anything – If a PC can play it, Veebeam can play it on a TV – anything from TV shows and movies streamed on Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and YouTube, to downloaded video and personal photos.
    * Secure wireless USB – Veebeam creates a secure point-to-point wireless connection between a laptop and a TV. Wireless USB is more powerful than traditional WiFi because it offers more bandwidth, better security and less interference in an in-room environment.

Veebeam can be ordered starting today through the company's three online stores (US, UK, Europe) which are accessible through www.veebeam.com.  The product is available in two versions, Veebeam SD and Veebeam HD. Veebeam HD includes the same composite A/V outputs as the Veebeam SD but also includes HDMI, Digital Audio and 2 USB ports.

Availability and Pricing

Veebeam is available in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe from the company's website (www.veebeam.com), and soon on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

    * Veebeam SD | $99 USD, 99 GBP (VAT included) & 109 EUR (VAT included)
    * Veebeam HD | $139 USD, 139 GBP (VAT included) & 149 EUR (VAT included)

Intel Technology Showcase Preview From IDF 2010
There was quite a bit of activity on the show floor at the Technology Showcase taking place at the Intel Developer’s Forum, with a multitude of vendors hawking their latest wares. Unfortunately, there weren’t too many brand new products on display, like the OCZ RevoDrive X2 we showed you yesterday, but we still managed to snag a few pictures of a few PC-related products we thought you may be interested in checking out.
Â

Â
First up, we have Lenovo and DisplayLink. Lenovo didn’t have any brand new products on display, but did have an assortment of Intel-based netbooks, notebooks, and nettops. Their Atom-based nettop IdeaCenter Q150 was one of the cooler items on display, along with the N5901 handheld mini wireless keyboard and mouse. Talk about a cool device for the ol’ HTPC.

We posted the DisplayLink release yesterday dealing with the company’s new USB 3.0-based graphics adapters right here, so I stopped by their booth. Retail-ready USB 3.0 products weren’t quite ready, but there are a couple of shots of the development device, which was up and running.
Â

Â
Crucial was also on hand showing off their latest memory products and solid state drives, but didn’t have anything new to announce. But Gigabyte had a couple of upcoming products on display that had some new flavor. In Gigabyte’s boot were a couple of 6-Series motherboards for Sandy Bridge, the P67A-UD5 and the P67A-UD7. The boards were outfitted with 24-phase power and sported Gigabyte’s new color scheme. With Sandy Bridge boards, the blue PCB with light colored connectors is going away in favor of a dark PCB with silver cooling. Also take note of the accents on the board’s cooling will be anodized in different colors to signify the series, feature set, etc. Both boards will support SLI and CrossFire along with all of Gigabyte’s other proprietary features like dual-BIOS, etc.
Â

Â
We also stopped by to see Kingston and SuperTalent. Not much new that hasn’t already been released in the SuperTalent booth, but they were showing off their excellent USB 3.0-based flash drives. Kingston was also showing off products that had already had been released, with the exception of their new USB 3.0 DataTraveler Ultimate flash drives. All of the details regarding the new DT Ultimate drives from Kingston, can be found right here.

LG Launches Optimus One, Chic for Smarphone Newbs
LG is taking aim at "the growing number of consumers looking to purchase their first smartphone" with the newly introduced Optimus One and Optimus Chic models, both of which are powered by Google's latest and greatest Android 2.2 (Froyo) platform.

"LG is offering the gateway into the smartphone world with the LG Optimus One and the LG Optimus Chic that offer the distinctive benefits of smartphones, in intuitive, approachable packages," said Skott Ahn, CEO and president of LG Mobile Communications Company. "LG has a vision of helping people access information fast and easily, no matter where they are. We believe the Optimus series will play a significant role in accomplishing our vision."

Both phones ships with a 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, and the same handful of Google features, wireless options (Wi-Fi and 3G), 2GB microSD card slot, and other odds and ends. The Chic, however, is supposed to be the better looking of the two (we'll let you be the judge of that) and it comes with a 5MP camera versus the One's 3MP. It also supports DLNA and has the ability to wirelessly sync contacts, photos, and more. The Chic will also come in both black and white, just like Apple's iPhone.

No word yet on price, but LG did say it will launch the Optimus One in more than 90 countries in October, with the Optimus Chic launching in Europe in November.
