Philly Tells Bloggers to Pay Up, For Biz Licenses
Indeed, it's true that some make quite a bit of money from blogging. Some make almost nothing, however. Still, Philadelphia says "a business is a business" and has started to track down bloggers and force them to buy a $300 business license. According to a report from a Philadelphia news site (not blog!), one such blogger, Marilyn Bess, has a low-traffic blog and has made a total of $50 over a "few years." Meanwhile, the cost of a business license would run $300. The cash-strapped city, obviously not wanting

For those of you who might not keep up with the company's roadmap, here's the current situation. Llano, the 32nm

App Blocked From App Store Because of User Registration?
Apple has rejected an update to the "Read It Later" iPhone app. It appears the reason is a strange one: the app requires a pre-registered account to function. Read It Later (both Pro and Free) allows users to bookmark and save pages for offline reading, and to sync your reading list between your iPhone, iPad, computers, and browsers. In a blog post, the developer (Nate Weiner) notes that the latest version 2.2, was rejected for a confusing set of reasons (emphasis his): “Hello Nathan, Thank you for submitting

Intel's Pinetrail Atom N550 CPU Ships In 12 Netbooks Today
It's something that we have been clamoring for, and it's something that netbook users at large have been wanting for some time now, even if they didn't know it. We're talking about faster Atom processors. Intel's Atom platform has been lagging somewhat in our eyes over the past couple of years, but it has been hard to really knock the series due to the lack of competition. AMD's Athlon Neo family competes somewhat, but it gets so hot that many don't even consider it.

Today, a new dual-core Atom is shipping within new netbooks, as the Pinetrail 550 hits the scene. Acer, ASUS, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, MSI, Toshiba and a bunch of others are starting to ship their newest netbooks with the Intel Atom N550 within, with a grand total of 12 netbooks being available with it right now. It's a step up from the Pinetrail 450 we reviewed last December, but it remains to be seen how well the chip will do in practice. We suspect a few N550-powered netbooks will head to the labs soon, and we'll definitely put the chip through its paces. We aren't getting our hopes up too high for an Atom revolution just yet, but we're cautiously optimistic.

Dish Network to Try Its Hand at Delivering Online Content
As the saying goes, you either run with the big dogs or stay on the porch. Dish Network has chosen the former, joining a growing number of content providers to jump on the online video bandwagon with a new video portal, DishOnline.com. This is Dish Network's take on "TV Everywhere," which will let users watch full episodes of movies online, get exclusive behind the scenes extras, excerpts, and previews, and program their DVR boxes from anywhere they're able to hop online.

"People are shifting where they watch video, and I want to shift with them," said Dave Shull, Dish's senior vice president for programming, said in an interview.

Currently in beta form, DishOnline.com is teasing viewers with some free video clips. Cable shows and most movies, however, will only be made available with a subscription or a one-time rental fee.

"Browse over 5,000 movies to rent straight to your Dish Network DVR," Dish Network advertises. "Many in high quality 1080p HD! New releases this week include: Angels and Demons, Funny People, Julia and Julia, Public Enemies, Star Trek, and more..."

The biggest challenge for Dish Network will be getting content providers to jump on board. The satellite operator is off to a good start, however, having sweet talked several cable networks into serving up content online, including Discovery Channel, HGTV, and MTV, to name just a few.

Demon Creates Broadband Service Just For Gamers
It's about time! For years, gamers have been fighting for respect. Most people don't take them seriously, though the gaming business is obviously a huge one. Razer makes a living from selling accessories to hardcore gamers, and gaming PC sales don't seem to be hurting. So if high-end mice and GPUs sell so well, why wouldn't a high-end Internet service catering to gamers? That's what Demon hopes to do, offering a new broadband service that's supposedly tweaked to provide the best experience for gamers.

Bigfoot Networks has tried something similar with their custom Killer network cards, which reportedly level out jitter and make for smoother online gameplay sessions. But Demon's new broadband product is an entire access connection designed for low latency. The Internet service is also built to prioritize traffic within games in order to optimize the experience, with the "Demon Game Pro" offering speeds approaching 20Mb down and 1Mb up. The service also includes a free wireless router, static IP address and tweaked traffic prioritization. Consumers will also have access to a 24 hour in-house tech support team, and amazingly, the service won't cost a fortune. The starting price is just £21.99 per month for a 12 month contract, but of course you need to be in the UK to sign up.

Something tells us this won't be the first (or last) of its kind, and it's just a matter of time before something similar lands in other nations with power-hungry gamers.

DEMON LAUNCHES GAMING BROADBAND SERVICE AND BECOMES HEADLINE SPONSOR FOR ISERIES GAMING EVENTS

ISP to provide best gaming experience for gaming enthusiasts

SOUTHEND, UK, 20th August 2010 – Demon, a brand of THUS Limited, today announced the launch of a broadband product, Demon Game Pro, aimed exclusively at the gaming community. The new, low latency service will prioritise gaming traffic and be ideal for serious gamers who want to achieve a competitive edge over other players.

Demon Game Pro will provide a better gaming experience over standard products because of the lower network latency, improved ping times and 24 x 7 UK based support. Demon Game Pro will offer speeds of up to 20Mb downstream and 1Mb upstream, a free wireless router, traffic prioritisation and free static IP address, crucial to maintaining consistent uptime during gaming as well as providing an option for users to host their own game servers.

The service will also be supported by a 24 hour, UK based in-house technical support team, many of whom are avid gamers themselves. Demon Game Pro will be available at a special launch offer price of just £21.99 per month for a 12 month contract.

Matt Cantwell, Head of Demon, commented: "We know how important a good broadband connection is to the gaming community, and we are excited to be launching this product which has been designed to meet the specific needs of gamers. At Demon we appreciate that a better connection allows better gaming, and are confident that gamers will see the benefits that this service offers them.

Alongside this new product announcement Demon has confirmed it will be a headline sponsor for Multiplay's iSeries gaming events for the next year, starting with Insomnia40 which runs from 27th – 30th August at Newbury Racecourse, UK.

Demon Broadband will be providing Multiplay with significant connectivity for its iSeries events, in the form a 1Gb circuit. This will enable high quality, fully interactive play for the gaming community in attendance and will officially make iSeries events the fastest LAN parties in the UK.

"We are delighted to be a headline sponsor at Multiplay's iSeries events," continued Cantwell. "Our long heritage in the broadband market combined with our technical expertise has led to gamers being key customers of Demon, and we're looking forward to re-engaging with them at these events."

Craig Fletcher, Managing Director of Multiplay, said: "At Insomnia40 we are looking to build on the success of i39 back in April, which saw over 100,000 gamers involved, either through their presence at the event or through their viewing of the online streaming. Our partnership with Demon is geared to provide the right technology foundation to give gamers at our iSeries events full and uninterrupted access to a range of interactive gaming."

With more than 6,000 visitors expected, and another 100,000 viewers online, Insomnia40 is recognised as the "Glastonbury of Gaming" since its inception in 1999. It will host a mix of large-scale LAN gaming and social events, industry exhibitions and professional tournaments. A highlight of the event is the World Cyber Games to be held onsite, the winners of which will travel to Los Angeles later in the year to represent the UK in the World's biggest gaming tournament.

Dell Debuts Inspiron Mini 1018 Low-End Netbook With Atom N455
Another day, another netbook. This time, it's a new one from Dell, and it's another in the Inspiron Mini 10 lineup. Dell's Mini 10 range has been around for nearly as long as 10" netbooks have been around, and the new Mini 1018 borrows styling cues from the curvy Inspiron R notebook line and includes mostly just the basics at a lower price point. You won't find a Broadcom media accelerator or an SSD here, but you also won't find a $500+ price tag.

The Mini 1018 is a lower-end netbook meant for those who just need to handle the basics, offering a single-core Atom N455 processor, DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive, Wireless N Wi-Fi, a black coating and a 10.1" display with a 1024x600 resolution. Bells and whistles aren't included for the most part, but the £279 price point is obviously about as low as it gets for brand new netbooks.

Dell is currently shipping this machine in the UK and Italy, but the notebook should find its way into other markets shortly.
