Eurocom Introduces 15.6" and 17.3" FOX Laptops With NVIDIA Optimus
Eurocom has been producing high-end notebooks for years now, and they often get purchased by other companies and rebadged from there. But the company's newest machines aren't the usual. Rather than being big, beastly gaming notebooks, the new Fox line is more on the nimble side, and these show some respect for battery life with integrated NVIDIA Optimus. What's most unusual about the Foxes is the size. Usually, we see Optimus in systems that are smaller; ultraportable machines with switchable graphics are all the rage right now, as they can be used for both gaming and portable work. But Eurocom is included Optimus into larger machines. The two Fox laptops are 15.6" and 17", and both can be ordered with a Core i5 or Core i7.
Each machine ships with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT330M (1GB) and integrated Intel HD graphics, and there's a single button that enables gamers to activate the GPU switch. The 15.6" M5100M starts at just $999, whereas the 17.3" B7110 starts at $1199. Both price points are rather low for machines this large, particularly when you factor in that you're basically getting two GPUs here. Is this the beginning for Optimus in larger machines? We hope so, that's for sure.
Eurocom launches line of gamer-friendly notebooks with Optimus, the latest in graphics switching technology from NVIDIA.
Eurocom’s new line of gamer-friendly notebooks features NVIDIA's Optimus technology, which intelligently switches graphics between 1GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT330M and Intel HD integrated graphics to deliver optimal battery life (up to 240 minutes).
It also offers a choice of 15.6†and 17.3†Full HD 1920x1080 displays and comes with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 technology.
The EUROCOMÂ Fox line is available for order today starting at $999 for 15.6"Â B5100M FOX and $1199 for 17.3"Â B7110 FOX model.
Eurocom FOX line of gamer-friendly notebooks features special VGA Optimus button that allows the user to switch between Optimus Mode (where GPU switching is automatic) and UMA Mode (for constant power-saving with he integrated GPU only).
- In the UMA Mode system will use only integrated GPU (part of Intel’s Arrandale technology) for maximum power-saving.
- In the Optimus Mode will allow the system to automatically determine whether to use discrete GPU (dGPU) and integrated GPU (iGPU) depending on task and/or application.
Thus the user can completely control how the graphics system operates just by pressing the VGA button – the button light will indicate the current mode.
- Green color: UMA Mode Activated. The system will use the integrated GPU (iGPU) only
- Orange color: Optimus Model Activated. Optimus technology will determine automatically when to use the integrated GPU (iGPU) or discrete (dGPU).
There are also two separate GPU LED indicators displaying which GPU is in use; Green - Integrated GPU (iGPU) activated; Orange - Discrete GPU (dGPU) activated

Mark Hurd Resigns As HP CEO
Out of nowhere, HP CEO has resigned. Quit. Left the company. Headed for other pastures. Late on a Friday, after most investors had headed out for the weekend, Hewlett-Packard quietly dropped a bomb that their CEO was no more. Effective immediately, CEO Mark Hurd no longer has his CEO title, and CEO Cathie Lesjak has been appointed interim CEO.The reason? Anytime there's a sudden departure, rather than a departure where the existing CEO helps bring on his or her replacement, it usually means scandal. And in this case, it's a scandal. HP has confirmed that there has been a claim of sexual harassment against Hurd, and while the female in question is apparently not going to file any charges, it has been turbulent enough to cause Hurd to depart. His decision was reportedly made following an investigation by outside legal counsel and the General Counsel’s Office, overseen by the Board, and while the investigation determined there was no violation of HP’s sexual harassment policy, but did find violations of HP’s Standards of Business Conduct.
The basics of the story is that this contractor was hired from 2007 to 2009 to do work, and invalid expense reports were filed during the relationship. This violates HP's standards, since it cannot be easily determined if the reports were actually dealing with work or the scandal. Here are Mark Hurd's comments on the matter: "As the investigation progressed, I realized there were instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career. After a number of discussions with members of the board, I will move aside and the board will search for new leadership. This is a painful decision for me to make after five years at HP, but I believe it would be difficult for me to continue as an effective leader at HP and I believe this is the only decision the board and I could make at this time. I want to stress that this in no way reflects on the operating performance or financial integrity of HP."
It doesn't sound like this will change anything about HP's future, and a search is ongoing for the future CEO. No time line has been set yet, but it will be interesting to see whether or not HP looks inside or outside for a replacement. If someone from Palm were to take over, would that change the angle of the company? We'd love to find out.
HP CEO Mark Hurd Resigns; CFO Cathie Lesjak Appointed Interim CEO; HP Announces Preliminary Results and Raises Full-year Outlook
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HP (NYSE: HPQ) today announced that Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Mark Hurd has decided with the Board of Directors to resign his positions effective immediately.
“HP has an extremely talented executive team supported by a dedicated and customer focused work force. I expect that the company will continue to be successful in the future.â€
The Board has appointed CFO Cathie Lesjak, 51, as CEO on an interim basis. Lesjak is a 24-year veteran of the company who has served as HP’s CFO and as a member of the company’s Executive Council since January 2007. She oversees all company financial matters and will retain her CFO responsibilities during the interim period.
Hurd’s decision was made following an investigation by outside legal counsel and the General Counsel’s Office, overseen by the Board, of the facts and circumstances surrounding a claim of sexual harassment against Hurd and HP by a former contractor to HP. The investigation determined there was no violation of HP’s sexual harassment policy, but did find violations of HP’s Standards of Business Conduct.
A Search Committee of the Board of Directors has been created, consisting of Marc L. Andreessen, Lawrence T. Babbio, Jr., John H. Hammergren, and Joel Z. Hyatt, which will oversee the process for the identification and selection of a new CEO and Board Chair. HP’s lead independent director, Robert Ryan, will continue in that position.
Hurd said: “As the investigation progressed, I realized there were instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career. After a number of discussions with members of the board, I will move aside and the board will search for new leadership. This is a painful decision for me to make after five years at HP, but I believe it would be difficult for me to continue as an effective leader at HP and I believe this is the only decision the board and I could make at this time. I want to stress that this in no way reflects on the operating performance or financial integrity of HP.â€
“The corporation is exceptionally well positioned strategically,†Hurd continued. “HP has an extremely talented executive team supported by a dedicated and customer focused work force. I expect that the company will continue to be successful in the future.â€
Robert Ryan, lead independent director of the Board, said: “The board deliberated extensively on this matter. It recognizes the considerable value that Mark has contributed to HP over the past five years in establishing us as a leader in the industry. He has worked tirelessly to improve the value of HP, and we greatly appreciate his efforts. He is leaving this company in the hands of a very talented team of executives. This departure was not related in any way to the company’s operational performance or financial condition, both of which remain strong. The board recognizes that this change in leadership is unexpected news for everyone associated with HP, but we have strong leaders driving our businesses, and strong teams of employees driving performance.â€
“The scale, global reach, broad portfolio, financial strength and, very importantly, the depth and talent of the HP team are sustainable advantages that uniquely position the company for the future,†said Lesjak. “I accept the position of interim CEO with the clear goal to move the company forward in executing HP’s strategy for profitable growth. We have strong market momentum and our ability to execute is irrefutable as demonstrated by our Q3 preliminary results.â€
Lesjak has taken herself out of consideration as the permanent CEO but will serve as interim CEO until the selection process is complete. Candidates from both inside and outside the company will be considered. The selection of a new chairman will occur in conjunction with the CEO decision.
The company does not expect to make any additional structural changes or executive leadership changes in the near future.

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 14, 2009 – Acer, the third largest vendor in the worldwide PC market, today announced the Acer Aspire Z5610-U9072, a truly elegant, no-compromise all-in-one desktop PC featuring intuitive multi-touch technology and Windows 7 Home Premium. A powerful entertainment hub for the home, the Z5610 packs first-class performance and feature-rich functionality in a striking design. It will be available this holiday season at online retailers for an attractive price of $899.99. Engineered to eliminate clutter and maximize workspace, this practical all-in-one streamlines the home or office with a flash of style and offers a unique blend of features and architecture. Boasting a stunning 23-inch HD display, ATI Mobility Radeon™ graphics and Intel® Pentium® Dual Core processing, the Aspire Z5610 offers world-class digital prowess.
“Our Aspire Z5610 all-in-one is a beautiful blend of visual elegance, state-of-the-art technology and premium performance,†said Susan Hu, desktop product manager for Acer America. “The intuitive touch-screen with Windows 7 multi-touch capability brings new excitement and hands-on efficiency to digital media applications. Intuitive Multi-Touch Display
Featuring 1920x1080 pixel resolution, the 23-inch HD 16:9 TFT display enhances games, Internet surfing and more with ultra-sharp, colorful imagery. Intuitive multi-touch technology brings an entirely new level of control to the computer user. In the past, the touch experience has been limited to one-finger touch capability. With multi-touch, users can intuitively interact with the PC using multiple fingers as they would a mouse. They can open and close programs, browse online newspapers, flick through photo albums and shuffle files and folders, using nothing but their hands.
Windows 7 is the first Windows operating system to fully embrace multi-touch technology. To zoom in on an image or map, users just need to place two fingers on the screen and spread them apart. To right click a file, users simply touch it with one finger and tap the screen with a second. The integrated multi-touch technology enables more gesture combinations and functionality than single-touch screens for a faster and more intuitive digital experience.
Premium Performance
Comprised of powerful desktop components, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM upgradeable to 8GB and a 320GB SATA hard disk for storing a huge multimedia library, the Z5610 is a no-compromise desktop solution. Discrete ATI Mobility Radeon graphics display images in vivid color and sharp detail, while Intel® Pentium® Dual Core processors fuel the system with significant power.
For dynamic audio, 5.1-channel surround sound is delivered via an integrated 5W stereo speaker system. With ports for headphones, microphones and other audio peripherals, users can immerse themselves in their favorite high-def music and movies. DVD movies and other files from a digital camera or videocam can be enjoyed with the slot load DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive for archiving media.
The Acer Aspire Z5610 provides a fast network connection with 802.11b/g/Draft-N wireless and Gigabit Ethernet. It also has a built-in HD webcam and microphone for videoconferencing with family and friends.
Aesthetic State-of-the-Art Design
The combination of style, top-of-the-line desktop components and touch technology make this PC a powerful entertainment hub for the home. Inspired by high-end digital entertainment, the Aspire Z5610 is an elegant PC that bridges the gap between traditional desktops and monitors. A seamless integration of a desktop PC with the usability of a multi-touch LCD display, it’s an easy fit for any living room, den or office.
Designed as a timeless piece, the Z5610 boasts simple purposeful details such as an illuminated strip between the LCD and sound bar, which helps users see the keyboard in a darkened environment. The system’s clean and simple lines emphasize the ease and simplicity of the user’s PC experience. Elevated by two chrome legs, users can discretely stow away the keyboard under the desktop to further free up workspace and maximize the system’s multi-touch capabilities.
Innovative Software
In addition to Windows 7 Home Premium, the Aspire Z5610 also comes with Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7, a set of six multi-touch optimized applications and games. These include three casual games, Microsoft Blackboard, Microsoft Garden Pond and Microsoft Rebound and three surface applications - Microsoft Surface Globe that lets users browse the world and zoom in on any location on a virtual 3D earth; Microsoft Surface Collage, a touch-enabled background and Microsoft Surface Lagoon, a touch interactive screensaver.
In addition, the Aspire Z5610 offers Acer TouchSuite, an integrated touch interface that syncs the PC and Internet with fingertip precision. Acer TouchSuite makes it easy to browse and enjoy social networking and digital media of all types. Users simply go to the Acer TouchPortal to activate Acer Touch Gadgets, which include:

Worldreader Seeks To Provide Kindles To Youth Around The Globe
You've probably heard about One Laptop Per Child. It's an organization started many years ago in hopes of providing cheaper, low-end notebooks to students around the world by selling them in bulk to governments. It never really blossomed like they hoped, but the company is still around and still making machines, albeit at slightly higher-than-anticipated prices. But now, a new nonprofit company is attempting to do something similar with Amazon's Kindle. You could argue that teaching kids to read is equally as important as teaching them computer skills, but this one is a bit more tricky. And less tricky, if you think about it. Worldreader doesn't actually have to build the products that they are hoping to distribute. Instead, they are doing a series of trial runs in Ghana, hoping to get Amazon's famous e-reader device out to developing nations. The company was founded by David Risher, an Amazon senior VP that was said to be "responsible for growing the company’s operations beyond books."
Plans about long-term distribution are still forming, but they already have an agreement with Ghana's government to "roll the project out more widely and is trying to raise money now to fund another trial this fall." The study will actually take a look at whether having a Kindle boosts the amount of books youth read over a school year, and the test will initially include 300 junior and high school students.
We're obviously big fans of this initiative, and we certainly hope it works out for them. And with global 3G, they should also be able to download new books wirelessly when there's a cell tower around.

Audiovox Introduces Portable DVD Player With FLO TV Service
In general, mobile TV has had a difficult time gaining ground in America. FLO TV has been one of the primary companies out there trying to get people hooked, but based on the small amount of compatible devices out there, we're guessing that it hasn't been a huge home run. But that could be because most devices thus far have been for watching TV only. It's tough to imagine too many people wanting to buy an extra device solely for watching TV on the go, and even tougher when you figure in the extra monthly cost. But Audiovox has an interesting idea. They're trying to integrate FLO TV into a device that consumers may want already, making FLO TV just the icing on a cake that someone was already going to purchase. The company's new Audiovox 7" Portable DVD Player with FLO TV combines two devices into one, enabling consumers to watch movies on disc or from the air.
This approach seems to make a lot more sense to us. If you imagine using this with kids in the rear of a vehicle, they want to check out Disney Channel and Nickelodeon while you're still in range of FLO TV content, though the device could double as a DVD player when you're somewhere rural. At no time is the device non-functional. The DFL-710 can be purchased now for $199.99 at Best Buy, and that includes a three-month pre-paid subscription to FLO TV; afterwards, you'll need to pay $14.99 to keep the TV service active.
Audiovox Launches First Portable DVD Player with Built-in FLO TV
— New Model Lets Consumers Access Live Mobile Television on a Portable DVD Player —
HAUPPAUGE, NY & SAN DIEGO — August 5, 2010 — Audiovox Corporation (NASDAQ: VOXX) and FLO TV Incorporated, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today introduced the new Audiovox 7†Portable DVD Player with FLO TV™, offering television, sports and movie enthusiasts another way to access live mobile television. The Audiovox Portable DVD Player with FLO TV allows consumers to watch epic moments of live and time-shifted TV shows or relax with their favorite DVDs while on the go.
The player delivers high-quality video and audio features, a built-in rechargeable battery, stereo speakers and has a 7-inch diagonal 16 x 9 wide screen. With FLO TV service, viewers can select from children’s programming (Disney Channel, Nickelodeon), live sports, breaking news (CNN Mobile, FOX News Channel) and hit shows to complement their DVD collection. Because the FLO TV service is delivered over America’s largest dedicated mobile TV network, there are no buffering or bandwidth issues for a hassle-free viewing experience.
“Audiovox has been successfully delivering the award-winning installed automotive FLO TV solution to retailers and car dealers since the beginning of this year,†said Tom Malone, president of Audiovox Electronics Corporation. “This new system expands our product offerings to the portable DVD market where we expect the addition of FLO TV will drive us to the leadership position there as well — showing consumers not only how to watch but, with the addition of FLO TV, expanding their options for what to watch as well. FLO TV’s breadth of TV content and Audiovox’s commitment to quality manufacturing makes a wonderful pairing for people who can’t miss a moment of their favorite shows.â€
“This product represents the latest step in our ongoing efforts to bring live mobile TV to every small screen,†said Bill Stone, president of FLO TV. “With Audiovox’s Portable DVD Player with FLO TV, consumers who enjoy taking their media with them get the unique dual capability of playing DVDs and watching live television on the same device.â€
The DFL 710 is now available at select Best Buy store locations. It will retail for $199.99, which includes a limited time offer for a three-month, pre-paid subscription to the FLO TV service.*

Virginia Tech's HokieSpeed Supercomputer To Rely On CPUs And GPUs
Supercomputers are everywhere, but they hardly get the attention that they deserve. Hundreds of these huge machines churn out all sorts of data and analysis that many humans use in their everyday life, but most take it for granted. By and large, supercomputers have been "stale" and "boring" to average consumers. After all, you can't exactly buy and use your own supercomputer (at least not without tons of cash and a really good application), but Virginia Tech's new supercomputer is different. As the worlds of the CPU and GPU have collided over the years, the same thing now seems to be happening in the supercomputer realm. The university has acquired a $2 million grant that will allow them to build the HokieSpeed, but what makes this unit stand out if the combination of GPUs and CPUs. Usually, supercomputers rely almost entirely on CPU power. But this one is a "new heterogeneous supercomputing instrument based on a combination of central processing units (CPUs) and GPUs." In other words, this is one of the first supercomputers where the GPU is just as important as the CPU.
The public is being told that this new machine "is expected to deliver 35 times better peak performance, 70 times better peak power efficiency, and 14 times better peak space efficiency than System X." Wu Feng, associate professor of computer science as well as electrical and computer engineering and principal investigator on the grant, described the HokieSpeed as such: "HokieSpeed is expected to catalyze new approaches for conducting research via the synergistic amalgamation of heterogeneous supercomputing and cyber-enabled tools to enhance ease of use. In particular, it will give end users the ability to perform in-situ visualization for rapid visual information synthesis and analysis. It will also control their level of immersion in the discovery process - from being completely immersed, making real-time intuitive decisions via a large-scale gigapixel display, to observing the instrument automatically collect, organize, and analyze data in support of visual analytics. A large set of Virginia Tech researchers from across the university will be actively involved in research using HokieSpeed."
