Hardware Roundup: Intel Core i5-655K and Core i7-875K Edition

Intel has released a pair of K-series processors with unlocked multipliers. Slated to be officially released at the upcoming Computex show in Taipei, the two processors are the Core i5-655K and the Core i7-875K. The two chips are unlocked versions of the current Core i5-650 and Core i7-870 and differ only in the fact their multipliers are not locked, making overclocking them a lot easier. In the past, you had to move up into Intel's Extreme Edition processors, and their $1,000 price tag, to get an unlocked chip. Intel is pricing these a bit more reasonably, with the dual-core i5-655K going for $216 and the quad-core i7-875K priced at $342.

Working Hoverboard Shown Off

File this under really cool as a French artist has made a working hoverboard. Artist Nils Guadagnin has recreated the hoverboard from the movie Back to the Future II, right down to the color scheme. The board uses electromagnets to levitate and a laser system to keep everything stabilized. The only problem is no one can stand on the board, but gentle pushes seem to do just fine while still keeping it floating. All I can say is, I want one.

The One Laptop Per Child project has announced that it won't use Microsoft Windows on the upcoming XO-3 tablet. The tablet will feature an ARM processor, and only Windows Mobile supports this processor. A full featured OS such as Windows 7 was desired, but Microsoft has no plans to make it available for ARM processors. The current generation OLPC laptop offers both Linux and Windows support, but feature x86 processors. The first version of the XO-3 will feature the Android OS from Google, while production versions are expected to use a different version of Linux.

More Gamers to Flock to WoW?

In a recent discussion with Frank Pearce, an executive vice president at Blizzard, he revealed that the company is optimistic about the growth potential of World of Warcraft. The game has been unable to surpass 11.5 million subscribers since it reached that number in 2008. Frank believes that the upcoming expansion Cataclysm, along with the release of Wrath of the Lich King in China will bring new players and hopefully attract old players back to the game. The number of subscribers is still very large, but from a financial standpoint growth is always good. Especially for parent company Activision which has been having trouble with its Call of Duty franchise.

HP Launches Four New Monitors

Not content to sit idly by on the monitor front, HP has launched four new monitors today that are sure to fit any size you need. The four monitors launching today are the 2010i, the 2210m, 2310m, and the 2710m. The 2010i is a 20 inch model, the 2210m a 21.5 inch model, the 2310m a 23 inch model and the 2710m a 27 inch model. With the exception of the 2010i, all the monitors have a resolution of 1920x1080. The 2010i is a 1600x900 resolution which is a bit small but should still look good. The 2010i also only has VGA and DVI inputs while the other three include an HDMI port to connect to your computer. All of them will have a response time ranging between 5ms to 2.5ms, built in 2W speakers, and a static contrast ratio of 1000:1.

No word on a launch date was announced, but the prices will be $180 for the 2010i, $220 for the 2210m, $260 for the 2310m, and about $350 to $400 for the 2710m. The 2710m did not have a price announced but I bet it will fall roughly in line with others in its size.
