Acer Debuts 6" LumiRead E-Book Reader With ISBN Scanner
Many could argue that the last thing the world needs is another e-book reader, but we aren't yet in that camp. Amazon's Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook could use the competition, and Acer is a solid name in the industry with what appears to be a solid idea of how they plan to change it up (with "it" being the e-reader market). The company has recently announced their 6" LumiRead, which is half-typical e-reader, and half-all new. The entire devices measures only a few millimeters thick, and it's outfitted

Bigfoot Networks And PowerColor Create GPU/NIC Combo Card
To date, Bigfoot Networks has remained mostly a niche company. Only hardcore gamers know about them, and even fewer are willing to pay north of $100 for a high-end NIC card. Bigfoot Networks has had a relatively simple product line over the years: a high-end network card here, and a revamped high-end network card there. You get the drift, we're sure. But now the company is trying to break out in a big way, with a new partnership shedding light on how the company may eventually find themselves involved in

Major WebOS Engineer Heads To Google's Android Team
And just like that, the shakeup at Palm continues. A few days before HP eventually came public with their intentions to acquire the struggling cell phone maker, Michael Abbott, SVP of software and services, decided to bolt for the door. Now, another huge pillar at Palm has decided that the new HP-Palm is no place for him. Matias Duarte is heading for the exits at Palm (or what's left of Palm), but even though it's probably a name you're unfamiliar with, the ramifications could be significant. Mr. Duarte was

MeeGo v1.0 Now Available To Download For N900 And Netbooks
Remember MeeGo? That's the operating system that was formed when Intel and Nokia decided it best to merge their respective Moblin and Maemo efforts into one system designed for mobile devices, MIDs, UMPCs, slates, and even netbooks. Not much has been said about the software since it was initially launched, but now consumers are getting the first good look at what exactly this OS will bring. The MeeGo 1.0 release is currently only for Nokia's N900 handheld computer and for Intel Atom-based netbooks. All other

Air Display Converts Your iPad Into A Secondary Display For Just $10
Ever heard of Avatron Software? Don't worry, most people would agree that they haven't. Drobo FS Gains Native Apple Time Machine Support
Data Robotics shipped their first true NAS drive early last month, caving to requests from users around the world to finally add a native Ethernet connection to their otherwise very intelligent RAID box. The storage solution itself is basically little more than a Drobo S (which we just took a deep dive with), but rather than having USB/eSATA/etc. ports, there's just a single Ethernet port to plug it directly into your network. One thing that was curiously missing at launch, however, was native, official support

Verizon Wireless Considering "Bucket" Billing For 4G Data
Many smartphone data plans today have a 5GB cap on data. While this is adequate for most users, we still prefer unlimited access when it's available and affordable. Unfortunately, spectrum is still limited. Although newer 4G technologies may use the spectrum more efficiently, there are still constraints as to how much spectrum is available. We may never know how much the spectrum crunch figures into a carrier's plans, but it's at least part of the equation. Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam mentioned at a Barclays

Need help! Forgot to turn on VPU recovery.

Hi all. I have a serious problem. I was recently overclocking my GPU using Catalyst Control Centre. I overclocked my video memory slightly and the screen made colourful blocks everywhere and then went blank. For some reason, my screen is not responding when I'm using that overclock setting. Now the problem is that the setting is saved because I forgot to tick the box 'VPU recovery' which resets the setting. So whenever I turn on my computer it will run to that setting as soon as Catalyst automaticly boots up. So then my screen goes black everytime my computer fully boots. I cannot find a way to reset the setting. Some help on how to reset it?

Mozilla Attempts To Sidesteps iPhone Ban On Rival Browsers

In an effort to get around Apple's ban on rival browsers for its iPhone, Mozilla plans to offer a Firefox application that will give users access to their browser bookmarks and history. The app will also let users open tabs from their most recent Firefox sessions.

The Firefox Home app is a spin-off of the bookmark and tab synchronization technology Mozilla currently offers as an add-on for the Firefox desktop browser. Mozilla will submit the free application to the App Store within the next three weeks. Sadly, Mozilla has no way to know when or if the app will be approved and available to users, so it's hard to say when we'll be able to get our hands on this app.

Firefox Home Coming Soon to the iPhone

We have been working on an application for the iPhone based on the Firefox Sync (formerly Weave Sync) technology. The app is called Firefox Home, and it gives iPhone users instant access to their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks and the set of tabs from their most recent browser session. What’s more, it provides Firefox “Awesome Bar” capability that enables people to get to their favorite web sites with minimal typing.

Firefox Home provides an amazing “get up and go” experience. It’s encrypted end-to-end. It’s your home on the Web, wherever you are. And, of course, it’s free.

Firefox Home for iPhone is part of a broader Mozilla effort to provide a more personal Web experience with more user control. For devices or platforms where we’re unable to provide the “full” Firefox browser (either technically or due to policy), we aim to provide users with “on the go” instant access to their personal Firefox history, bookmarks and open tabs on their iPhones, giving them another reason to keep loving Firefox on their desktops.

Why is this useful?

  1. Left work in a hurry? You can pick up where you left off with access to the list of tabs you just had open on your desktop.
  2. Need those directions to that restaurant you were just reading about on your desktop? The confirmation code for your flight? Just start typing in the Awesome Bar and those pages will be right at your fingertips.
  3. Does it drive you crazy to have to enter the full URL on your iPhone that you’ve visited several times from your desktop? You won’t need to anymore with this app.

Air Display Converts Your iPad Into A Secondary Display For Just $10
Ever heard of Avatron Software? Don't worry, most people would agreethat they haven't. But they have just produced one of those "killerapps" for iPad that we said would convert it from a cute and functionaltoy to something of a must-have device in the future during our review. If you've been searching for "reasons" to actually buy an iPad, thismight be one. Those secondary displays from Mimo Monitors have been areal hit, as there's hardly a computer user who would say that they haveplenty of screen real estate.

But it's not always easy to lug around a USB monitor. If you're iPadends up with your carry-on bags anyway, the Air Display app may make itfar more useful if you travel and find yourself using a notebook often.Basically, Air Display turns your iPad into an extra monitor for yournetbook, laptop or desktop; it works over Wi-Fi, and basically tricksyour host machine into thinking that your tablet is in fact anothermonitor that needs to be fed.

It's really as simple as that, and while it's not perfect fortransmitting video or fast-moving action onto the iPad display, it'sideal for having your chat window, e-mail, etc. just residing over onthe side and out of your main view. This is obviously best for netbooksand ultraportables, as the 9.7" IPS panel on the iPad adds a great dealof screen space (percentage wise). It's available now for $9.99, and ifyou already own an iPad, that's far less expensive than buying anentirely new secondary display.

Air Display connects the devices over a localized wireless networkand leverages the iPad's auto-rotation feature, allowing the device tobe rotated in portrait or landscape orientation as needed. The iPad canbe positioned to the left or right of the primary screen, and thedevice's hallmark touch-screen functionality can still be used tomanipulate features on the iPad screen, just as if it were being usedalone.

The app delivershi-performance mouse capabilities with a screen refresh rate of 150frames per second for no perceivable lag time in mouse performance.Compressed image quality and refresh speed are continually balanced tooptimize viewing quality or speed of movement as needed.

For easy installation, the required Mac components are installed to the main machine, with theAir Display app loaded on the iPad. Once basic configurations are made, the main machine automatically recognizes the iPad as a secondarymonitor each time the app is loaded on the device. Once the iPad app isclosed, the main machine automatically returns to single-screen mode.

For best results, astand may be used to position the iPad in the ideal viewing position—apicture frame, plate holder or folding stand works well, as do some iPadcases.

Designed by seasonedMac OS developers with more than 25 years of Apple software engineeringexperience, Air Display is the result of deep iPlatform knowledge tomost effectively leverage the platform's unique capabilities.

Avatron's success withits first two iPad apps are the result of the company's focus onproductivity apps, which translate very well on the iPad, relative tothe iPhone. Avatron's first iPad app was Air Sharing HD, which letsusers transfer virtually every file type from their desktop to the iPad,creating a portable document storage device.

Air Display for iPad isavailable in the U.S. now for just $9.99in the App Store. The Mac OS installer is free at www.avatron.com/ad.International versions will launch in conjunction with the iPadinternational launch.

Air Display is part ofAvatron's highly acclaimed family of productivity Apps for iPhone, iPodtouch and iPad. For more information, visit www.avatron.com.

OLPC XO Tablet Takes Shape: Future Of Education, On A Slate
One Laptop Per Child is a wonderful organization. Despite their failedattempts to provide thousands of laptops to students around the globefor under $100 (the machines ended up being slightly more expensive thanthey had hoped), that has not prevented the company from shipping mininotebooks to classrooms all around the world, helping children learn in away that they otherwise would not if it hadn't been for OLPC'sdetermination. The green XO laptop is now a symbol of hope andexcitement, and we're thrilled to see the next generation of OLPC takingshape.

As the tablet revolution marches on, OLPC is looking into creating atablet for the future generations of students in developing nations (andin first-world nations, too). The entity has recently teamed withMarvell in order to develop a new XO Tablet, which will be based aroundMarvell's "Moby" slate reference design. This slate will also feature amulti-lingual soft keyboard with touch feedback, enabling it to serve millions more children who speak virtually anylanguage anywhere in the world. It's design is simple, which is perfectfor a learning tool, but the inside is astoundingly powerful.

The device will be designed to work with mesh networks and will featurean application to directly access more than 2 million freebooks available across the Internet. It will have a very long (exactspecs on the battery have not been made public) battery life, as well assupport for Flash 10, two-way teleconferencing, video chatting, andeven 1080p video playback. Marvell's ARMADA 610 (1GHz) processor will bethe heartbeat of the tablet, and there will also be an 802.11n Wi-Fimodule and support for Android, Ubuntu (Linux) and Windows Mobileoperating systems. We suspect that each school will be able to decidewhich OS best fits their needs.

No specific pricing details have been talked about, but we get the ideathat a sub-$100 point is being aimed at. Even if it winds up beingsomewhat more expensive, this still seems like a great teaching tool andit would certainly benefit students around the globe. Good luck OLPC,the kids are pulling for you!

Catalyst 10.5 Linux Driver - Still Full of Fail

I wasted about 4 hours yesterday on the ATI 10.5 driver under Linux. I had heard that 10.5 had OpenGL improvements that fixed a lot of the Wine problems, so I decided to have a go at swapping back to the original ATI 5870 in the hot-rod system the great guys at HH and iBuyPower gave me.

Wow... what an exercise in futility.

Now, the reports were correct: some major issues are fixed; all of my games now start under Wine (whereas previous drivers would deliver black screens in many Valve Source games). BUT.... the games all end in lock-ups of the game and desktop within half an hour. It seems to me that maybe the driver isn't properly controlling the fan speed, because the lock-ups became more and more frequent.

Rebooting into Win7 and playing the same games showed no lockups... so it's definitely a driver issue.

I replaced the card with my 9800GTX+ again, and things are completely stable again.

Getting the fglrx driver to work was an ordeal in itself, because I'm already running the Maverick Meerkat 2.6.34 kernel (Kubuntu 10.10), and removing the fglrx driver was a whole other trial.

Long story short, I'm going to need a preponderance of evidence that there's been real improvement before I give ATI another shot under Linux. That's a shame too, since ATI is the company that's been more open with their info; allowing developers an easier path to an open driver.

Gigabyte Introduces Pine Trail-M Netbooks, M1125 Netvertible
There are people who will opt for a tablet after the iPad's success, and there are those who insist that a dedicated QWERTY keyboard is necessary for their use. And then there are those who will split the difference. Gigabyte is taking their opportunity at Computex to introduce one of those split-personality notebooks, with the M1125 netvertible debuting in Taiwan.

This machine boasts an 11.6" display with a 1366x768 resolution, and there's also USB 3.0 support (rare on a netbook, or any notebook really), an optical disc drive, VGA output, an Intel Calpella chip and audio in/out ports. Further specifications aren't being revealed until the show starts, but the M1125 is just the beginning.

The company will also showcase three 10.1" Pine Trail-M netbooks: the T1000, M1000 and Q1000. The T1000 has a rotating multi-touch display, chiclet keyboard and "gold textured surfaces." The M1000 has a docking station (definitely unusual for a netbook), while the Q1000 is more of the "standard fare." Pricing on all of these has yet to be made public, and we're still waiting on ship dates as well. At least we're assured that tablets won't completely overtake smaller, fully-featured notebooks...we think.

GIGABYTE will exhibit three 10.1-inch Pine Trail-M netbook platforms combining style, technology and functionality. These are the T1000, M1000 and Q1000. The T1000 has a rotating multi-touch screen, chiclet keyboard and is aesthetically appealing with its gold textured surfaces. The M1000, includes the innovative docking station from GIGABYTE, allowing the netbook to be used as a mobile device or as a workstation when docked. Finally, the Q1000 emphasizes its design simplicity while offering functional mobile computing. Consumers will now have a wider variety with better options available to them with the introduction of these 3 unique netbooks.

Notebook Series

The Notebook series from GIGABYTE combines both business and entertainment aspects of your lifestyle, into one powerful device. Gigabyte, has recently, exhibited a variety of notebooks based on the Intel® Calpella platform with screen sizes ranging from the 14-inch Q1447 to the 15.6-inch Q1585. These notebooks are integrated with an NVIDIA® Graphics chipset including an HDMI interface allowing users to indulge in high quality multimedia for business or for pleasure. The Q1585 features the latest LCD technology supporting 3D cinema and an exhilarating gaming experience.

GIGABYTE remains committed to its R & D and is constantly working on new, exciting and innovative ideas to meet the needs of consumers. GIGABYTE's passion for delivering the ultimate user experience, through innovative mobile computing solutions, will be on show this year. GIGABYTE will endeavor to continue developing products that match consumer lifestyles with enhancements to suit both business and recreational activities.

MSI Introduces Wind Top AE2420 3D All-In-One PC
MSI has been producing all-in-one desktops for awhile now, including a few models with full 1080p touch panels. But with 3D seemingly taking over the world, the company needed to make a move in that direction in order to stay on the bandwagon. Today, the world's first multi-touch 24" Full HD 3D all-in-one PC is being introduced, with the Wind Top AE2420 3D bringing 3D into an otherwise familiar fold.

Users will be able to watch 3D content on the machine via Shutter Glasses (included), and we're told that the whole family can gather around if they also purchase their own glasses. Of course, this also enables users to game in 3D, so that copy of Avatar you've been sitting on could come to life in a new way on this machine. MSI will sell versions of this machine with Core i5 and Core i7 options, and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5730 GPU will be at the helm to handle HD movies and 1080p gameplay. There's also a pair of 5W speakers, as well as a bundled keyboard, mouse and remote. No pricing or ship details have been announced just yet.

The Wind Top AE2420 3D features a 120Hz high scanning frequency LED panel, twice the speed of average displays, to provide users with a comfortable viewing experience when looking at 3D images, rather than the uncomfortable sensation felt when watching on 60Hz 3D panels. Lenovo Cans Skylight OS In Favor Of Android, U1 Also Downgraded
Wow. That's really all there is to say about this. With Apple's iPad leading to a crazy amount of interest in tablets, HP's recent acquisition of Palm and their WebOS and Lenovo's fantastic recent quarter, there's been a lot of wild stuff going down in the tech sector. But who saw this coming? Lenovo, which made a big name for themselves by introducing a few "industry firsts" at CES this year, just flipped on a number of efforts that were seemingly unique to the company.

Just after MeeGo 1.0 went live for download, here we have another Linux-based operating system falling off of the grip. One is born, one is buried. The Skylight OS was introduced back at CES, and at the time, it seemed perfect for this year's upcoming netbooks, tablets, etc. But soon after, the OS quickly fell off of the map, and we really haven't heard anything about it since. But the craziest part is this: Lenovo isn't killing the Skylight OS just because it had a change of heart, but a change in plans. Instead of Skylight OS, we'll be seeing Android on Lenovo devices. We sort of understand the desire to side with an OS that already has a foothold in the industry, but it's still a real blow for anyone really looking forward to something completely new and fresh from Lenovo.

Sadder still, the U1 hybrid netbook/tablet that first saw the light at CES is also being eliminated. Or, at least it's being thought of now as a concept rather than something that is gearing up for shipment. So it's a sad day in the Lenovo world today, but at least the company is shifting gears and placing bets on a proven OS. No pressure, Android!
