Apple's iPad to drive tablet shipments

Apple's iPad will drive the burgeoning tablet computer market and shipments could grow sixfold by 2014, IDC said in research released on Thursday.

IDC projected tablet shipments to reach 7 million this year and topping 46 million in 2014.

Oracle to acquire database security firm Secerno

Oracle will acquire Secerno, which makes firewall products for databases that protect against hackers and data breaches, the companies said Thursday.

The purchase price was not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close at the end of next month, according to Oracle.

Standing room only for HTML5

Anyone wondering about the level of interest in the HTML5 specification need only have tried to get into a standing room-only session on the topic at Google's developer conference on Wednesday afternoon.

An estimated 450 to 500 persons were able to get into the session, entitled "Developing With HTML5," at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco. Outside the room, many others were turned away.

Motorola offers mobile device management

Motorola announced today two managed services to help companies with limited resources keep mobile devices and wireless LANs up and running.

One of the new offerings, the Managed Infrastructure Service, uses Motorola's AirDefense network management software to monitor wireless LANs and troubleshoot them for problems, Motorola said in a statement.
