Western Digital buying Hoya's magnetic media operations
Western Digital, the world's biggest HDD manufacturer in Q1, has this week announced that it will spend about $235 million in cash for the magnetic media sputtering operations of Hoya Corporation.
The acquisition deal, which is expected to be closed laster this quarter, will see Western Digital take control of the facilities, equipment, intellectual property and working capital of Hoya's media sputtering operations, based in Tuas, Singapore, as well as related equipment at Hoya's Nagasaka, Japan.
"This investment will enhance WD's ability to support our customers' growth," said John Coyne, president and chief executive officer of WD. "In addition to these assets, WD will also gain highly skilled and knowledgeable employees, valuable intellectual property and access to Singapore's deep academic and technology resources. We expect a seamless transition with the integration of this well-run operation into WD, enabling immediate support of anticipated hard drive demand growth in 2010 and beyond."
All the output of the acquired business is planned to be transitioned exclusively to WD requirements over a four month period, after current orders from various customers are fulfilled.

Seen below, PowerColor's uber-Eyefinity HD 5970 model features 12 mini DisplayPorts that can power a maximum of 12 monitors, it takes up three PCI slots so it will have a massive cooler, and packs 4GB of GDDR5 memory. The card's clocks have not been set yet and we may have to wait until early June and Computex to find them out. AOL selling ICQ to Digital Sky for $187.5 million
The not-so-exciting bidding war for AOL’s ICQ instant messaging service has ended and the winner is Digital Sky Technologies, the largest Internet company in the Russian-speaking and Eastern European markets.
ICQ, which currently has some 32 million users worldwide and a solid position in markets like Russia, Germany, Czech Republic and Israel, will be bought by Digital Sky for $187.5 million in a deal expected to be closed in Q3.
"The acquisition of ICQ is a strategic enhancement of our business in Russia and Eastern Europe. ICQ's long-standing brand name and its sizeable loyal customer base together represent a very attractive opportunity to further strengthen our position in the region," said Yuri Milner, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Sky Technologies.
AOL has been looking to shed ICQ since last year while it was still owned by Time Warner.

JooJoo tablet now available for European, Canadian orders
Fusion Garage's controversial tablet called JooJoo has went international, with its purchase page now accepting orders from Canada and Europe, in addition to those coming from the US.
Introduced only in the US last month, JooJoo weights 1.1kg and packs a 12.1-inch (1366x768) capacitive touchscreen, a 1.6 GHz Atom N270 CPU, Nvidia ION graphics, 4GB of built-in flash storage, an accelerometer, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, a battery life of up to 5 hours, plus a Linux operating system.
For Canadians, the tablet costs 499 CAD (shipping in free), while in the UK and the rest of Europe it is priced at £319 (£15 shipping) and 359 Euro (15 Euro), respectively. JooJoo availability is expected to be expanded to other market soon but first, Fusion Garage aims to release a software update to fix a large number of problems pointed out by early adopters.

Asus debuts the P7F7-E WS SuperComputer motherboard
Asus has now announced the P7F7-E WS Supercomputer, a workstation-prone ATX motherboard based on the Ibex Peak 3450 chipset which features support for LGA 1156 desktop CPUs - Core i3, i5, i7, and Xeon 3400 series server processors.
This now board has a hybrid 16+3 phase VRM design, six DDR3-2000 memory slots, four PCI-Express x16 slots backed by one Nvidia NF200 bridge chip enabling 2-/3-way SLI and CrossFireX multi-GPU setups, two SATA 6.0 Gbps and six SATA 3.0 Gbps ports, two USB 3.0 connectors, dual Gigabit Ethernet, 71 channel audio, FireWire and a DVI output.
The P7F7-E WS Supercomputer also packs a diagnostics LED (and add-in card), the TurboV EVO and GPU Boost technologies, an EPU to lower energy consumption, and the Express Gate SSD, an instant-on OS that can be used for web browsing and light work. GlacialTech is feeling the heat of the upcoming summer sunshine and so it has prepared a new Igloo-branded cooler to keep you Intel (LGA 775/1156/1366) or AMD (AM2/AM2+/AM3) processor in 'chilled out' mode even when doing hardcore work.

Buffalo unveils USB 3.0 solid state drive line
Buffalo has today revealed the SHD-PEHU3 family of external solid state drives which make use of a USB 3.0 interface aka SuperSpeed USB and are capable of transfer speeds of up to 244 MB/s when using the included Turbo PC software.
Coming only in a glossy black chassis, the new drives measure 97 (W) x 57 (H) x 12 (D) mm and weight 66 grams, are compatible with USB 3.0/2.0/1.1 systems, and are bundled with security software for easy encryption and data protection.
The 64GB, 128GB and 256GB SHD-PEHU3 SSDs are slated to ship in Japan in late May at prices around $282, $510 and $1,079, respectively.

TSMC reports revenue, profit growth for Q1
Taiwanese contract chip manufacturer TSMC has presented its results for the first quarter of 2010, saying that revenue reached NT$92.19 billion (USD 2.93 billion), up a bit compared to Q4, but up a sweet 133.4% over Q1 2009.
The rise in revenue this past quarter also came with an increase in net income which was of NT$33.66 billion (USD 1.07 billion) - up 3.1% sequentially and 2,059% on-year.
According to TSMC, in Q1 40nm deliveries accounted for 14% of total wafer sales but the percentage should grow rather fast this year as the likes of AMD and Nvidia will need more chips made on this process.
For the current quarter TSMC predicts a revenue between NT$100 billion (USB 3.17 billion) and NT$102 billion (USD 3.24 billion).

HTC licenses Microsoft technology for its Android phones
A short and rather unrevealing press release tells us that HTC and Microsoft have signed an agreement through which the former gets 'broad coverage' to Microsoft's patent portfolio.
"HTC and Microsoft have a long history of technical and commercial collaboration, and today's agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercial arrangements that address intellectual property," said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft. "We are pleased to continue our collaboration with HTC."
Unfortunately there are no specifics mentioned except that HTC will utilize Microsoft's technology for its Android phones and that it will pay royalties to the Redmond-based software giant.
