Opera Mini for iPhone passes 1 million downloads
Approved rather surprisingly by Apple a few days ago, Opera Software's Opera Mini browser for the iPhone has been a massive hit, managing to top the App Store download charts in all the 22 countries in which the service is available. The download rush has resulted in over 1,023,380 iPhones, iPads and iPod touch players being loaded up with Opera Mini to give Safari a run for its money.

"Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. "With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users."

Opera Mini is available free of charge for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Android.

British IT staff endure overwhelmingly negative management
According to a report published by the Chartered Management Institute in the UK, based on a survey that addressed how people feel about working in various company structures, some 60% of workers in the IT industry feel that a dominant' management style negatively impacts the workplace.

Addressing 'bureaucratic', 'authoritarian', 'secretive' and 'dominating' management styles, the survey revealed that 24% of IT workers find their management to fall under 'bureaucratic', 19% find it 'authoritarian', and 15% find it 'secretive' - where only 5% find their managers to be 'empowering' and a measly 2% find them 'trusting'.

CEO of the CMI spoke out against these rather ghastly results, stating that "It is an embarrassment for the IT sector that the management style of 58% of companies is seen as negative by the people that know them best: their employees." He went on to say "Negativity breeds negativity and, if we are serious about pushing the UK towards economic recovery, we need more businesses that are innovative, accessible and empowering."

Here you can see the online questionnaire published by CMI which is designed to help managers understand how their colleagues perceive them... and of course, to start improving their methods to a positive end!

Amazon launch European Relational Database Service
Amazon have announced the launch of their Relational Database Services (RDS) in Europe this week, in a statement that claims businesses and AWS (Amazon Web Services) developers will be able to ensure that their data stays within Europe.

Providing lower latency and generally better performance, the RDS servers are located in the EU, which, according to Amazon, makes more sense in offering business closer to other resources under AWS such as EC2 and S3.

RDS is a simple and easy to use web solution to hosting scalable relational databases online, and amongst other features, it boasts a full MySQL database service, meaning that all operational procedures in existing MySQL databases will work with Amazon RDS, allowing users to scale resources and/or storage capacity via a single application programming interface.

"RDS is one of the fastest growing AWS services, attracting leading firms from industries such as technology, media, communications and the public sector," said AWS' Vice President, Adam Selipsky. "We have been working hard to extend the same high-quality low-cost service to customers who have told us they want to deploy in Europe."
