ASRock 870 Extreme3 board lacks IGP, has USB 3.0
At the beginning of this week we've seen ASRock's 880G Extreme3 motherboard so it's only fitting that we end the work week with another Extreme3 series AM3 board. Seen below is the 870 Extreme3 which makes use of the AMD 870 northbridge (no integrated graphics on this one), and the SB850 southbridge, and features support for AM3 CPUs (up to 140W TDP), the UCC (Unlock CPU
Core) chip and function, 5-phase power, four DDR3-1800 slots for up to 16GB of RAM, two PCI-Express x16 slots (CrossFireX-ready), plus one eSATA and five SATA 6.0 Gbps ports.
ASRock's board is equipped with the NEC MPD720200 controller providing two USB 3.0 connectors, and also has Gigabit Ethernet, 7.1 channel audio, a FireWire port, a debug LED, as well as Power, Reset and Clear CMOS buttons. Expect to see the 870 Extreme3 hit retail later this month.

Biostar talks AMD 870 motherboards
Biostar is on preview mode this week so, after revealing its 880G line, the company has today offered quite a lot of info about its upcoming AMD 870-powered motherboards. Both featuring an ATX form factor, the Tseries TA870+ and TA870 boast a 5-phase power design, support dual-, triple-, quad- and hexa-core AM3 processors with a TDP of up to 140W, the BIO-unlocKING function, four DDR3-1800 memory slots, Gigabit Ethernet, two PCI-Express x16 slots and no on-board graphics (hence the lack of G in the chipset name).
The TA870+ includes 7.1 channel audio, plus one eSATA and five SATA 6.0 Gbps ports, while the TA870 comes with 5.1 audio and six SATA 6.0 Gbps connectors. Biostar hasn't said anything about the two motherboards' release but they'll likely reach shops late this month.

Nvidia posts GeForce 197.41 WHQL driver for GeForce GTX 4x0 cards
Since its board partners have already begun to ship GF100-based cards, Nvidia has today rolled out the first WHQL-certified driver for the DirectX 11-ready GeForce models. Dubbed GeForce 197.41, the driver includes the PhysX software v9.10.0129 and supports only the GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480 cards (although a modified INF should fix that).
If you're one of the lucky ones to receive a GeForce GTX 400 card this week be sure to download the GeForce 197.41 from Nvidia's website (links provided below) and tell us all about it. Pictures and videos are more than welcomed, especially if they depict your cooking skills.
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows XP 32bit)
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows XP 64bit)
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows 7/Vista 32bit)
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows 7/Vista 64bit)

CTL offers speak peek at its own slate
Classmate PC maker CTL (Computer Technology Link) has posted a video on YouTube to provide some details on a device it has been working on "for quite some time", the 2go PC Slate. The upcoming device, which should take on the iPad and other tablets and slates this summer, is powered by a 1.66 GHz Atom N450 CPU and boasts a 10-inch capacitive touchscreen, 1 or 2GB of RAM, a 2 megapixel webcam, two USB ports, a mini VGA output and an Ethernet port.
The 2go PC Slate will run Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional and is planned to go on sale priced at $499. CTL says that the slate will play Flash (unlike the iPad) but doesn't suggest there's a HD accelerator included which would mean you'll have Flash but won't play HD video much.

Microsoft to release 11 patches next week
Ye olde software maker Microsoft has sent out word that next week, on April's Patching Tuesday, it will deliver 11 updates which are meant to resolve a total of 25 vulnerabilities, some disclosed, but mostly (thankfully) still under wraps. One of the fixes, rated 'important', will tackle a DoS (Denial of Service) issue found in Exchange Server (2000, 2003, 2007 & 2010), while two will 'handle' problems within Office XP, 2003 and 2007.
The bulk of releases - one 'moderate', three 'important' (including the Exchange one), and five 'critical' are set to fix vulnerabilities in Windows operating systems that could lead to spoofing, DoS attacks, and remote code execution. The affected OS list includes Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003 and Server 2008 (R2) so be sure to update on Tuesday.

WebKit2 announced, to feature process splitting
Apple developers working on the open source WebKit layout engine (used for Safari and Chrome) have sent a memo to announce that very soon they will start providing landing patches for WebKit2. According to the devs, the upcoming framework, which is made for Mac and Windows (but can be ported for other platforms), boasts native support for process splitting, meaning that, like the Chrome browser, it will run tabs in separate sandboxes.
The split process model enables enhanced security and, more importantly, extra stability, as a tab crash will only close that exact tab and not the whole browser. WebKit2 is also built so as to provide a stable C-based non-blocking API, the idea here being to "make the API usable while still providing a comprehensive set of features to the embedder."
There's no word yet on when we'll be seeing the first WebKit2-based browser builds but we're hoping for a relatively short wait.
