PACid Group sues Microsoft, Sony, HTC, others for patent infringement
Last week Texas-based limited liability company The PACiD Group has filed a complaint through which it accuses over a dozen technology companies of patent infringement. According to PACiD, Asus, Microsoft, Nintendo, Samsung, Sony, Fujitsu, LG, Gigabyte, MSI, RIM (Research In Motion), HTC, Nikon and Palm are willfully violating two of its patents - # 5,963,646, issued in 1999 and titled 'Secure Deterministic Encryption Key Generator System and Method' and # 6,049,612 (issued in 2000) dubbed 'File Encryption Method and System'.

PACiD's complaint was submitted with the Texas Eastern District Court and it demands for a jury trial. With the lawsuit, PACiD seeks an injunction to prevent further infringement, as well as damages, costs, interest, enhanced damages and attorneys' fees.

Wireless camera solution appears for iPad
Whilst the iPad did not ship with a built in camera of any variety last Saturday, a pair of apps have appeared on the Apple AppStore this week that will let you do something arguably better - to pair an iPad and an iPhone 3GS via Bluetooth and use the latter as a wireless camera!

To get this going, users need to download the Camera A and Camera B apps onto your iPad and iPhone respectively.

Camera A costs $1.00 (USD), and Camera B is completely free. Once you have both applications on both devices, run them, switch Bluetooth on and pair them within the applications.

To take a picture, tap the camera icon at the bottom of your iPad's screen. A pop up prompt will ask you if you really want to save the photo... and if you want photos to save to both your iPhone and your iPad each time, then you can flip the little toggle switch in the lower right of the screen!

Of course, this means you have to actually own both an iPad and an iPhone 3GS... but let's face it, most iPad owners probably do!

Gizmodo reported that the probability is that this application allows the iPad to mirror the contents of the iPhone display - which, if true, could lead to other interesting apps that allow the iPad to tap into the iPhone's functionality.

Cisco announces UCS upgrade to 2nd Generation
Cisco are launching new updates to their Data Center 3.0 portfolio, and are claiming that businesses will now be able to take much better advantage of improved agility and support for data centers.

Amongst the updates, is the move of Cisco's range of Unified Computing Solutions (UCS) into its second generation, which means it will be getting some new features that have been driven by demands from customers and partners.

"There is a need among companies to reduce IT infrastructure costs and complexity in the datacentre, while also supporting virtualisation and improving agility for businesses," said Wendy Mars, Director for Data Centers and Virtualisation. "These are critical areas for the enhancement of services, and we think that the upgrades to the UCS that we first introduced last year can deliver a significant strategic competitive advantage."

With Cisco's UCS portfolio upgraded to the next generation two and four socket servers, coupled with up to 400% of the original memory capacity, they now offer 50% more processor cores and 300% greater application performance.

Bull unveil Bullx S-series supercomputer node
Bull, the French supercomputing specialists, have introduced a new line of commercial high-performance systems that are set to introduce the 'supernode' platform, where four socket server nodes can be expanded to support as many as 128 cores and 2TB of RAM.

The company has said that these new systems, which they have branded the Bullx S-series, are based on a project that the company worked on in cooperation with the French Atomic Energy Authority.

The series are designed to work as modules in part of larger supercomputing clusters, and are to be offered up as part of a multi-unit rack. Bull pins these units at high-performance markets, including but not limited to aeronautics, physics simulation and engineering calculations.

Utilising the new Intel Xeon 7500 series processors, Intel themselves are boasting a record breakthrough in performance in the 64-bit x86 processor realm.

"Our message to businesses and research establishments is, refuse to compromise, and open up new horizons for your organisation, while at the same time minimising the risks and reducing your carbon footprint," said Philippe Miltin, Bull's Vice President of Products. "For Bull, innovation has to be unlimited and unconstrained, our bullx supernodes are a concrete example of this principle."
