IBM offering start-ups a helping hand
Claiming the need for more and more innovation, Big Blue has announced an initiative through which it will be helping start-ups to "capture emerging business opportunities" in industries like energy and utilities, health care, telecommunications and government. According to IBM, the companies that will be able to participate in the new initiative will need to be privately held, be in business for less than three years and to actively develop software aligned to IBM's Smarter Planet focus areas.

The helping hand extended through the IBM Global Entrepreneur program will enable start-ups to:

- access IBM's software portfolio through a cloud computing environment
- work side-by-side scientists and technology experts from IBM Research to develop new technologies
- take advantage of dedicated IBM project managers to assist in product development
- attend new IBM SmartCamp mentoring and networking workshops with VC firms, government leaders, academics, and industry experts at the global network of 40 IBM Innovation Centers to build business and go-to-market plans
- tap a new social networking community on IBM developerWorks to connect with other entrepreneurs and more than eight million IT professionals from around the world.

"Businesses around the world are increasingly applying new technologies to address industry-specific needs, and technology start-ups are looking for new ways to capitalize on this trend," said Claudia Fan Munce, vice president of corporate strategy and managing director of the IBM Venture Capital Group. "IBM's goal is to help entrepreneurs gain the skills they need to bring new ideas to market faster using IBM technology to accelerate industry transformation and fuel innovation."

Google adds 3D view to Google Maps & Books
Not able to resist the current trend, Google has started embracing 3D and added it to the Street View in Google Maps and also in Google Books. To see the world online in (technologically-augmented) 3D you'll need to go intro Street View, put on a pair of red-cyan glasses and click on the newly-added icon on the left - the orange guy with the glasses.

In Google Books things are just as easy thanks to the added 'View in 3D' button that can be found under the title of the ebook you're reading. Glasses are still needed though. Now we're eagerly awaiting Gmail in 3D as it will surely be a great experience checking out the spam folder that way.
