Paper Manufacturer Urges Everyone to Print More; Declares Printers Great For Kids
According to John Williams, CEO and president of Domtar (self-billing as "The Sustainable Paper Company,") the major problem with kids today isn't drinking, sex, bad manners, or the rampant use of txtspeak—it's their printing habits. More accurately, it's their lack of printing habits, which Domtar blames on those darn tree-loving eco hippies and their crazy propaganda. According to Williams, anti-printing claims or concerns about the environment are "just bull," and there's no need to "think before you print."

Take that hippies!

"There is an appropriate use for paper. You should feel comfortable to use it appropriately and you shouldn’t be feeling there is some environmental negative when you use it," Mr. Williams said at a conference on Monday. The Domtar CEO is targeting Facebook and YouTube users in an attempt to reach more young people. "Young people really are not printers," Domtar said. "When was the last time your children demanded a printer? They want the electronic device."

We dug around on Domtar's website for more information on the PR campaign and instead found the latest issue of "Paper Matters," the company's trade publication. Williams' comments were actually drawn from a piece written by Lewis Fix, the VP of brand management and sustainable development. Based on his article, Fix has something of a love affair with paper and he's all-too-willing to share it.

People love paper because it "connects them to the important things in life." Material printed on paper is more "meaningful and lasting." It's also responsible for the existence of every good thing ever. Fix writes:
Great ideas are started on paper. The world is educated on paper. Businesses are founded on paper. Love is declared on paper. Important news is spread on paper. Justice is rendered on paper. Rights are guaranteed on paper. Freedoms are declared on paper." Â Â Â Â
Confusing Medium And Message:

Williams' remarks and faux indignation could win the company an award for "Most Obvious Display of Corporate Greed Masqueraded As A Public Virtue," but Fix's comments indicate a fundamental confusion between a message and the medium used to convey it. As mediums go, paper has had a long run and a good life, but you don't need paper to guarantee rights—you can actually do it on stage, interspersed with pithy song and dance numbers.

We at Hot Hardware like books and use paper, but you don't need to be a conservationist to see how the stuff is outdated. You can't search an index of 50,000 paper documents in seconds from a thousand miles away, you can't distribute printed material to a dozen people scattered across the globe in an instant, and you can't collaborate with someone on a real time project using two identical sheets of paper. Paper rots, mildews, molds, burns, fades, and is occasionally peed on by the dog. The only way to preserve printed documents in pristine condition for any period of time is to seal them inside enclosures filled with inert gas and carefully control the ambient light.

We submit to the fine folk at Domtar that great ideas, education, justice, rights, and freedoms all spring from the mind. Paper is the messenger, not the message. And Mr. Williams, with all due respect, a printer is one of the worst presents one person can give to another. In the world of computing hardware and electronic gadgetry, giving your significant other a printer is akin to presenting them with a vacuum, "Cooking For Dummies," and a coupon for Weight Watchers simultaneously. In many civilizations, the gift of a cheap printer is a veiled insult unless it's accompanied by several dozen ink cartridges.

They offered him a printer. He liked the bike more.

The reason kids don't ask for printers is because, on the Universal Scale Of Awesome Presents, printers rank between "Dead Hamster" and "Pet Rock." And if you're one of the six people who either really wanted a printer instead of a Nintendo growing up, we feel sorry for you. Please seek counseling.

Sony Almost Ready To Earn A Profit On The PS3
After nearly four years of production, numerous design revisions, and a determined battle to establish Blu-ray as the de facto next-generation method of HD content distribution, the PS3's financials have almost turned a corner. By August, Sony is expected to finally begin earning a profit on the actual Playstation 3 console, rather than losing money on every single console sold.

Sony's drive towards profitability has been anything but smooth. When the Playstation 3 launched, iSuppli estimated the company was losing $241.35 per premium system (60GB HDD, $599) and $306.85 for the low end 20GB model (a steal at just $499). Microsoft's first-generation XBox 360, in contrast, cost the company just $75, while the Wii was profitable at $6 per unit sold from the beginning.

Microsoft appears to have hit the break-even point back in 2008, 2.5-3 years post-launch, but it's taken Sony longer to close the gap. The company's second-generation PS3 released in 2008 cost an estimated $50 per console, while 2009 revisions cut that figure to $37. This time around, the cost reduction will be thanks to a new 40nm version of the Playstation's NVIDIA-built RSX "Reality Synthesizer" GPU. The new chip will pair up with a 45nm Cell processor and draw significantly less power than even the current PS3 Slim. This could theoretically allow Sony to remodel the enclosure; there's a persistent rumor that we'll see a new custom SKU come August.

“We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response to our new X2 line and the improved experience it’s brought our users,” said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi. “Now we’re bringing the Eye-Fi Geo X2 exclusively to Apple so that their users can effortlessly upload photos and videos for seamless editing and sharing with iPhoto and MobileMe.”

With the new Eye-Fi Geo X2, Macintosh computer users can wirelessly back-up both photos and videos directly into iPhoto or any folder of their choice on their computer. The Wi-Fi enabled memory card can also automatically upload photos and videos directly to MobileMe or one of more than 25 sharing sites like Facebook, Flickr, Picasa or YouTube. With Endless Memory mode, the Eye-Fi Geo X2 can also automatically make space available on the memory card after photos and videos have been safely uploaded to the computer or Web.

The Eye-Fi Geo X2 includes lifetime Geotagging service using Wi-Fi positioning to automatically tag photos with location information about where they were captured. It works seamlessly with iPhoto ’09’s “Places,” enabling Macintosh computer users to easily browse, search and sort their photos on maps or by location name.

Eye-Fi’s entire X2 card line-up ranges in price from $49.99-$149.99 and can be found in Best Buy, Office Depot and on Amazon.com, among other retailers. Eye-Fi has received numerous product awards including CNET’s Best of CES 2010 award, Mac Observer’s Editor’s Choice 2010 Award and Popular Photography’s 2009 Photography’s Outstanding Products (POP). RIM Teases BlackBerry 6 Operating System With Promo Video
Earlier in the week, RIM introduced two (or three, if you count thesecond version of the Pearl 3G) new BlackBerry smartphones, but theoperating system on those won't be the latest for long. At thecompany's WES show in Florida, BlackBerry 6 was introduced, provingthat 2010 really is the year of the revamped smartphone OS. This yearalone we've seen Windows Phone 7 launch, iPhone OS 4 teased and Android2.1 take over their space. Now, RIM is making sure it keeps up bygiving the world a sneak peek (and little else) of the upcoming OS.

All existing BlackBerry handsets that are shipping now ship with BB OS5. That operating system has been out for awhile now, and is beginningto show its age. BlackBerry 6 hopes to make up for lost time, introducing some of the cutting-edge features that are already wellpublicized on the other systems we mentioned. RIM is still keeping mostof the details private, using WES as a buzz machine to get peopletalking. Some of the forthcoming additions include an on-screenkeyboard, threaded messaging, native Facebook/Twitter access, a revisedWeb browser and an all-around more elegant presentation.

You're probably better off watching the teaser video below to get areally good idea of what's to come, and if the company stays on track,BlackBerry 6 will begin shipping next quarter.

Nikon Coolpix L100 Mega Zoom Camera Review

Don’t be fooled by the Nikon Coolpix L100’s DSLR-like looks. Although the L100 looks like a serious camera that could compete with the functions of a DSLR, it’s really a relatively simple point-and-shoot with a wide angle 15x zoom lens as well as image stabilization, a 3-inch LCD, and a high speed burst shooting mode of 13fps that surpasses that of many cameras.

The L100 is part of Nikon’s Life series of digital cameras that are known for their simple and easy to use functions. As Nikon describes it, the Life series is “Powerfully capable–yet simple, at an entry-level price.” Indeed, the L100 offers plenty of fully automatic controls for the user who wants to simply point and shoot. In fact, unlike a lot of mega zoom cameras on the market today, the L100 was designed for fully automatic use and doesn’t offer many manual controls at all. Click the link below and check it out...
