Opera Mini Approved For App Store: Browsing Alternative Hits iPhone And iPod Touch
Whoa, can it be true? Apparently it is. Of course, we're talking about Opera Mini becoming publicly available on the App Store, marking a huge, huge change in the way Apple handles certain software titles. In the past, Apple has been very quick to strike down any app submission that does "similar things" to apps that come pre-loaded on the iPhone, with a few exceptions. Google Makes Docs Two-Player Capable With Enhanced Collaboration
Every other week or so, we get the feeling that Google is making strides in fully taking over the world. Be it search advancements, Android advancements or their drive into being an ISP, Google is getting their hands dirty with almost everything. Google Docs has been around for years, and while many tech enthusiasts have shifted to them over desktop versions of Microsoft Office, the vast majority still haven't.
Google is hoping to change that, and they're constantly working to improve the services to make them more viable alternatives to desktop office suite applications. The latest round of improvements are some of the most significant in the life of the web apps. There are new preview versions of the new Google document and spreadsheet editors and a new standalone drawings editor, all built with an even greater focus on speed and collaboration. The changes make it easier for two people to edit a document at the same time from remote locations, which could easily change businesses in a big way.
The highlights are below, along with a video. But as always, the best way to see how things are changed is to open up a document and dig in yourself.
A better document editor
We’vebrought the responsive, real-time editing experience you’ve come toexpect from our spreadsheets over to documents, which means you can nowsee character-by-character changes as other collaborators make edits. We also added another popular feature from spreadsheets: sidebar chat,so you can discuss documents as you work on them with colleagues.
Thenew technical foundation also helped us improve document formatting, which means better import/export fidelity, a revamped comment system, real margins and tab stops, and improved image layout within documents. These improvements have been highly requested, but previouslyimpossible to create with the older documents editor on older browsers.
A faster spreadsheet editor
Withthe new spreadsheets editor, you’ll see significant speed andperformance improvements -- spreadsheets load faster, are moreresponsive and scroll more seamlessly. We’ve also added a host of oftenrequested features, like a formula bar for cell editing, auto-complete,drag and drop columns, and simpler navigation between sheets. And asalways, real-time collaboration in spreadsheets is easy with sidebarchat and the ability to see which cell each person is editing.
A new collaborative drawing editor
In the year since we launchedthe Insert drawing tool, we’ve received many requests for the abilityto collaborate on drawings and make them accessible directly from thedocs list. The new standalone drawings editor lets you collaborate inreal time on flow charts, designs, diagrams and other fun or businessgraphics. Copy these drawings into documents, spreadsheets andpresentations using the web clipboard, or share and publish drawings just like other Google Docs.

Maingear's Quantum SHIFT Workstation PC Cuts Through CS5 And More
Maingear already made a name for themselves in the gaming PC marketwith the SHIFT. The company calls that company the world's first"personal supercomputer," and though we doubt it'd be good for solvingNASA problems or the like, it really is quite powerful. In an effort tocater to the creative professionals who also want that kind of power, but need GPUs that are better suited to computational programs ratherthan sheer gameplay, the company has introduced the Quantum SHIFTWorkstation PC.It's billed as the ultimate PC for Adobe's Creative Suite 5 (which justlaunched today, actually), and who are we to argue? When a machinecomes with up to three NVIDIA Quadro FX CPUs, a selection of Intel Corei7 processors and up to 24GB of RAM, we tend to believe it can handlethe occasional blur or filter. The three GPU setup allows the machineto really cut through CS5, with the GPU-accelerated color picker, colordropper and real time brush resizing giving users immersive interactionwith the canvas.
The machine can be customized today, though the base price of $3399 will probably rule out an impulse buy.

MAINGEAR Debuts Quantum SHIFT Workstation PC for Creative Professionals
The ultimate PC for Adobe CS5 employs up to 3 Quadro FX cards, Intel i7 Processors, and up to 24GB RAM
Union, New Jersey – April 12, 2010 - MAINGEAR Computers, award-winning builders of custom computers for PC gamers, enthusiasts, and creative professionals, unveils the Quantum SHIFT Workstation, an everyday super computer that exceeds the demands of the most power hungry graphics professionals. Fully optimized for Adobe CS5, the SHIFT employs up to three NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics cards to enable a GPU accelerated Adobe Creative Suite that allows you to design with creative precision. SHIFT’s unique vertical heat-stack design ensures that your Quadro equipment remains cool and quiet no matter how intense your tasks may be.
With Adobe CS5 powered by MAINGEAR, you can navigate images like never before with GPU-accelerated scrubby zoom, bird's eye zoom, and 3D modeling. Also, GPU-accelerated color picker, color dropper and real time brush resizing give you immersive interaction with your canvas. The CUDA-accelerated Mercury Engine in Premiere Pro gives post-production houses the power to edit more than 3 layers and multiple effects in real-time. With Quadro’s GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro, playback of two layers HDV and effects can be accelerated in real time on the GPU. At nearly 30 frames per second. Compare that to 2.2 frames per second on the CPU only.
“Adobe CS5 fully leverages the advantages of NVIDIA’s Quadro FX GPU accelerated technology,†said Wallace Santos, CEO and Founder of MAINGEAR. “Quantum SHIFT optimizes both technologies with enhanced performance and airflow, providing creative professionals with the most advanced workstation PC ever created.â€
In addition, the new GeForce GTX 480 brings an unprecedented amount of professional power to the table. If you're looking for the ability to playback three layers of HD, and twice the performance of a GTX 285 in CS5, the SHIFT with GeForce GTX 480 is a powerhouse editing product.
"Adobe CS5 powered by GeForce GTX 480 hardware has enabled us to achieve same-day edits with our in-house video production," said Chris Morley, CTO of MAINGEAR. "In seven years of designing and selling high definition post production workstations, I've never seen so much get done in so little time and for so little money. The ROI with SHIFT powered by NVIDIA running Adobe CS5 is amazing."
Consumers can purchase the Quantum SHIFT at MAINGEAR's Web site www.maingear.com/quadro-adobecs5 or order by phone at (888-MAINGEAR). The base price is $3,399 and comes with MAINGEAR’s premium Lifetime Labor and Phone Support with a 1 year hardware warranty and is backed by the best in-house support team in the country.Â

The Weather Channel and WeatherBug both have weather apps approved even though a Weather app arrives on the iPhone and iPod touch, but other than that, most everything else has seen a rejection. Developers have seen e-mail apps rejected due to being too similar to Apple's own Mail app, despite the fact that many users are longing for a more robust alternative.
One thing that Apple has remained consistent about what that Mobile Safari was to be the one and only Web browser in the App Store. There wasn't really any wiggle room. When Opera announced a few months ago that they were submitting a version of their highly popular (and quite robust) Opera Mini browser to the App Store, most just laughed. No way Apple would approve it, most thought.

But today, the company has reached the finish line, and victory is in hand. Beginning in the next 24 hours (depending on market), Opera Mini will show up for free in the App Store, bringing a real browsing alternative to iPod touch and iPhone users. It sounds almost too good to be true, but it certainly is true. We're eager to give it a chance and see what it can do that Mobile Safari cannot. Will Flash videos even attempt to load? Will pages load faster? Will text render more clearly? Keep an eye on the App Store and be sure to give it a shot when it becomes available for download. At the very least, it's fantastic to see Apple allowing open competition in the App Store, even when these apps compete directly with Apple.
Opera Mini App approved for the App Store
Oslo, Norway - April 13, 2010 - Opera today announced its popularmobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touchon the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free downloadwithin 24 hours, depending on market.
Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fastmobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent beforesending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved pageloading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially onslower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with theOpera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save moneybecause of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especiallytrue while the user is incurring roaming charges.
"We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsingexperience with the Opera Mini App," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, OperaSoftware. “This app is another step toward Opera's goal of bringing theWeb to more people in more places."
The Opera Mini App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

Microsoft Targets Social Networkers With KIN
Microsoft took the wraps off of two new mobile phones designed for social network users. Known as the KIN One and KIN Two, the new phones are the result of a partnership with Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, and Sharp.“Working closely with our partners, we saw an opportunity to design a mobile experience just for this social generation — a phone that makes it easy to share your life moment to moment,†said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “We built KIN for people who live to be connected, share, express and relate to their friends and family. This social generation wants and needs more from their phone. KIN is the one place to get the stuff you care about to the people you care about most.â€

Both phones come with touchscreens and slide-out keyboards. The 4GB KINOne is a more compact model with a vertical slider whereas the 8GB KINTwo has a horizontal slider with more advanced features. The cameras on both phones have built-in image stabilization and LumiLED flash. You'll find a 5 megapixel camera on the KIN One and an 8 megapixel camera with high-def video recording capabilities on the KIN Two.
Described as a phone built for the youthful audience, the KIN family weaves social networking into the entire phone experience. The home screen (aka the KINLoop) displays feeds from Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter in a single location. Another area of the phone known as the KIN Spot lets you drag videos, photos, texts, Web pages, and other content to a single area of the phone and share that content with others. The KIN Studio puts the information from your phone on the Web. The KIN Studio automatically backs up texts, call history, photos, videos and contacts, and creates a personalized digital journal.

Recognizing that music and photos are a big part of people's lives today, the KIN includes the Zune Music & Media player and provides one-click uploading of photos. KIN owners can use a Zune Pass subscription to download music and video content.
The new phones will be available exclusively through Verizon Wireless beginning in May. Vodafone will get the handsets in the fall; at that time, they will be available in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
