
Western Digital delivers new hard drives for 24/7 work
Keeping the storage wheel spinning, Western Digital has now introduced the WD AV-25 family of hard drives designed for use in DVRs (digital video recorders), digital video surveillance and for other applications that require high reliability and 24/7 use.
The new 2.5-inch drives come in 160, 250, 320 and 500GB capacities and feature the Advanced Format technology (4096-byte sectors), a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, a working speed of 5400 RPM (rotations per minute), 32MB of buffer memory, a MTBF of 1 million hours, Preemptive Wear Leveling, and the SilkStream function which enables smooth, continuous digital video playback of up to five simultaneous HD streams.
"Customers that market audio and video recording applications, such as DVRs, media centers and mainstream surveillance systems, often require 24x7 operation from hard drives," said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups. "WD AV-25 hard drives are designed to withstand these demanding environments and offer consumers a small form factor solution that consumes less power, generates less heat, and operates quietly and, most importantly, reliably."
The WD AV-25 hard drives are backed by a three-year warranty and start at $50.

Apricorn unveils the Aegis Padlock Pro secure drives
Apricorn has today released a new line of encrypted portable drivers aimed at protecting large amounts of data while maintaining mobility. Available in two flavors, with a HDD or SSD, the Padlock Pro measures 19 x 84.5 x 120 mm, has both USB 2.0 and eSATA connectivity, on-the-fly 256-bit AES hardware encryption, as well as secure PIN access via the keypad built right into the drive's enclosure.
The HDD-equipped models (which have 5400 RPM drives) are capable of transfer speeds reaching out to 90 MB/s on eSATA, while the SSD versions can do 219 MB/s, also on eSATA. If USB 2.0 is used don't bet on more than 37 MB/s.

Corsair ships 32GB Flash Voyager Mini drive
Corsair has made its compact Voyager Mini flash drive much bigger, in terms of capacity, by releasing a model that boasts no less than 32GB of storage space. The new mini Voyager features a rubber casing that offers protection from shocks, Chip-on-Board technology, a cap-less design with a retractable USB connector, and a warranty of about 10 years.
"USB flash drive users love the convenience and ruggedness of the Flash Voyager Mini form factor," stated John Beekley, VP of Technical Marketing at Corsair. "The increase in density to 32GB allows users to carry their digital world with them at all times on this compact drive."

Acer officially intros the TimelineX family of Calpella laptops
Coming to confirm the last week's leaks and reports, Acer has taken the veil off its new TimelineX series of laptops based on Intel's Calpella platform. The first wave of Xs includes four models, the 11.6-inch 1830T, 13.3-inch 3820T, 14-inch 4820T and 15.6-inch 5820T - all featuring LED-backlit panels (with a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels), new, power-efficient hard drives,a thickness of just under an inch, a revised cooling system that should do its job well while also saving power, and a battery life of up to 8 hours.
Acer's laptops come equipped with Core i5 or i7 processors, up to 4GB of RAM, a HDD of up to 640GB, integrated Intel graphics or Mobility Radeon HD 5650/HD 5470 (switchable) graphics, and include a Crystal Eye webcam, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, optional Bluetooth 2.1 and 3G.
The TimelineX family will be pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Basic or Home Premium and should become available in the coming weeks. Acer didn't mention prices or a solid shipping date unfortunately.

Packard Bell rolls out the iPower X3.0 gaming system
Spicing up its product line, Packard Bell has now introduced the iPower X3.0 Intel-based desktop that targets enthusiasts and PC gamers. The new system is first and foremost ready to turn heads with its chassis featuring a street racer-inspired design with a black coasting, red lighting effects, and a graffiti-like logo.
Beside look, the case is also about function so it includes a front I/O panel with audio and USB ports as well as a multi-card reader. Two more USB 2.0 connectors can be found on top for even more expansion.
On the inside, the iPower X3.0 has a Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 3TB of storage space (via two HDDs), and AMD DirectX 11 or Nvidia DirectX 10 graphics cards. The desktop starts at 799 Euro and can go up to 1299 Euro.

Samsung Wave, first phone to get DivX HD certification
Announced last month as the first device based on the bada platform, the Samsung Wave has also become the very first mobile phone to receive DivX HD certification. What this means is that Wave is 'officially' ready and capable of 720p HD video playback. The phone packs a 1 GHz Snapdragon chipset and in addition to playing, it can also record 720p video courtesy of its included 5 megapixel camera.
"We were very excited to become the first manufacturer to offer DivX Certified mobile phones to consumers in 2007, and since that time we've continued to work together [with DivX] to help evolve the mobile video experience," said Younghee Lee, Vice President of Samsung's Mobile Communications business. "Now, we are able to extend that spirit of innovation with the first DivX HD mobile devices, both of which are industry-leading phones based on cutting-edge smart phone platforms."
Seen below, the April-bound Wave includes a 3.3-inch AMOLED (800x480) touchscreen, 2 or 8GB of internal memory, a microSD slot, GPS, an accelerometer, plus USB, WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. Oh, and DivX HD certification (BEd: You said that already).

HP's Z200 SFF workstation is small but fierce
HP has today also announced the upcoming introduction of the Z200 SFF (small form factor) workstation based on an Intel platform. This new system is two-thirds smaller than the Z200 minitower workstation, but it still packs a punch thanks to the use of a Core i3/i5 or Xeon 3400 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, professional graphics options and up to 2TB of storage space.
HP's compact machine features a tool-less chassis equipped with a 89% efficient power supply, is ENERGY STAR 5.0 qualified, EPEAT Gold rated, and is set to start selling worldwide as of April 5th. The base price for the Z200 SFF is $739.
In addition to the Z200 SFF, HP has added hexa-core Xeon 5600 CPUs as options for the Z800, Z600 and Z400 workstations.

PowerColor adds HD 5670, HD 5570 cards to its Go! Green line
PowerColor has today revealed two new additions to its Go! Green family of graphics cards and both are powered by the 40nm Redwood GPU. The models in question are a Radeon HD 5670 and a HD 5570 which boast 400 Stream Processors, DirectX 11 support, a 128-bit memory interface, 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM, a dual-slot passive cooling solution with four (HD 5670) or two (HD 5570) copper heatpipes, and D-Sub, DVI, plus HDMI outputs.
"By adding these products, the Go! Green series now has a complete product lineup of the 5000 series. The HD5750 to HD5450 expand the Go! Green offers of environmental friendly products which can fulfill each segment’s consumers’ demands," says Ted Chen, TUL CEO. "People who are looking to lower power consumption and a passive cooling solution should look at the Go! Green series as their solution."
The Go! Green HD 5570 comes with a GPU clock of 650 MHz (and no mention of the memory frequency), while the Go! Green HD 5670 features GPU/mem clocks of 775/4000 MHz. The cards' prices were not announced.

takeMS coming up with a 4GB DDR3-1600 kit
takeMS has revealed that it will be very soon shipping a new 4GB dual channel memory kit, one that targets LGA 1156-based platforms and works at 1600 MHz. The 2GB modules making up the pair lack any cooling solution but support XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) and can operate at 1600 MHz with 9-9-9-24 timings and 1.65V going through them.
takeMS has not mentioned a price tag of the kit but we're guessing it will be quite affordable. It kinda has to be.
