Opera downloads double in Europe after Windows Choice Screen roll-out
Opera Software, one of the main contesters of the 'link' between Internet Explorer and Microsoft's operating systems, has declared itself pleased with the browser market happenings following the introduction of the Windows Choice Screen.
According to the Norwegian company, European downloads of its latest desktop browser - Opera 10.50, have been higher than those of its predecessors, a big influence being exactly the release of the Choice Screen early this month.
From the data studied, Opera concluded that more than half the 10.50 downloads in Europe came via the Windows ballot screen which means people are more willing to try IE alternatives, now that they are offered an easy way to find and install new browsers. As for the increase in downloads enabled by the Choice Screen, it's over 100%, with some countries, like Poland, Spain and Italy, seeing a jump of over 200%.
Since Microsoft has agreed to keep the browser screen for at least five years, it's probable that Opera, as well as other companies developing browsers, will grab more market share leaving IE to dream of its former glory. We're game!

NEC doubling USB 3.0 controller production amid high demand
What's got two names, no real support for either AMD and Intel but scores in popularity? Yes, it's USB 3.0 aka SuperSpeed USB, the standard which is in so high demand these days that NEC is planning to double production of its USB 3.0-ready µPD720200 host controller. NEC's USB 3.0 chip has become available in September 2009 and last month surpassed 3 million shipped units, having found its way into multiple devices, including a lot of motherboards (both Intel and AMD-powered).
"The strong sales of NEC Electronics' USB-IF certified host controller clearly indicates the extraordinary adoption of SuperSpeed USB into consumer products," said Jeff Ravencraft, president and chairman, USB-IF. "Introduced just over a year ago, SuperSpeed USB has become the world's most widely watched technology, dramatically enhancing the speed with which consumers can transfer their data by providing the fastest USB experience available."
Since the need for SuperSpeed USB is expected to rise, NEC has begun ramping up production of the µPD720200 controller and aims to manufacture 2 million units per month as of April.
