Active Media delivers the SaberTooth ZT 1.8-inch SSDs
Active Media Products kicked off this week with a fresh release, that of the SaberTooth ZT 1.8-inch solid state drive featuring a PATA ZIF interface. the ZT SSDs come in 32GB and 64GB capacities, have MLC NAND Flash memory, bad block management for improved reliability, 32/64MB of cache memory, and provide read and write speeds of up to 100 MB/s and 85 MB/s, respectively. Both SSDs are backed by a one-year warranty.

"The SaberTooth ZT removes the performance tradeoffs that have plagued slim 1.8" ZIF drives for so long. Now you can get a truly fast ZIF drive that still fits in a standard 1.8" form factor. By incorporating a DRAM cache, we've dramatically improved write speeds over other ZIF drives," stated Active Media Products' VP of Sales, Jerry Thomson.

The 32GB SaberTooth ZT drive costs $169.95, while the 64GB model is priced at $299.95.

AMD moves ahead with its Open Physics plan
Announced in September (2009), the AMD supported and promoted Open Physics Initiative is now fighting Havok and PhysX (which are proprietary solutions) with some updated weapons provided by Pixelux Entertainment and Bullet Physics. To be more specific, AMD's open physics development environment has added Bullet Physics as the default rigid body physics system included with Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter 2 material physics engine.

DMM2 enables developers to integrate physics simulation into game titles that run on both OpenCL- and DirectCompute-capable platforms.

"Establishing an open and affordable physics development environment is an important accomplishment for both game developers and gamers, signaling a move away from exclusionary or proprietary approaches," said Eric Demers, chief technology officer, AMD Graphics Division. "Not only does the integration of Bullet Physics into partner middleware help drive broader adoption of physics in games, it ensures that when those games are released, all gamers, regardless of the hardware in their PC, can benefit from the more realistic experience enabled by those effects."

Beside the Bullet Physics update, AMD is going to offer developers a special deal in the form of a free DMM2 license that can be used for PC titles. The free DMM2 includes a reduced set of components but is claimed to be 'adequate for most games'. Those who want to use DMM for multi-platform games will have to buy the premium version of the engine.

EVGA GTX 4x0 cardboard has paper launch
Salty numbers aside, there's not much 'new' on the GF100 front, except the two renders below that are of the EVGA GTX 470 and GTX 480 boxes. As expected, the boxes (at least their front) aren't too revealing of the first Fermi-based cards but they do list some of the features included - SLI, PhysX and CUDA support, as well as the 3D Vision Surround technology.

Both the 1280MB GeForce GTX 470 and 1536MB GTX 480 are set for a March 26 release so expect something more than cardboard as that day closes in.
