Samsung Preparing 32GB DDR3 RAM Modules

Samsung, one of the major innovators in the DRAM market have started to sample its first 32GB (that's correct – 32 Gigabytes!) modules for the low power server markets. Last year in June, Samsung announced that it had developed its first 32GB module. This year, sampling has begun and mass production will begin next month in April. The RAM developed last year was built on the 50nm fabrication process, but Samsung have now moved onto 40nm for the new modules, and are scheduled to move onto 30nm in the latter half of the year in which we can expect even greater things:

"Our highly successful implementation of 40nm-class technology is indicative of our determination to move toward the 30nm-class process node in the second half of this year. Our 30nm-class technology will provide even more advanced memory solutions for high-end server and PC applications" - Soo-In Choo, President of Samsung Electronics Memory Division.

The modules will run at 1066 MHz (timings haven't been announced yet) and will have a low voltage of 1.35V. The Registered memory will be made up of a total of 72 chips, 36 on each side. Two way servers will now be able to have a total of 384GB of RAM, while four way servers will have a monolithic amount of up to 2TB of RAM. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but we should know some time next month and I can assure you – it'll cost more than a pretty penny.

Rapidshare Turns Criminals Into Customers

On March 26, 2010, the online file-hosting service Rapidshare announced that it is currently seeking major entertainment company partners to allow the site to permit users to upload currently copyrighted material to the Rapidshare website. Rapidshare’s General Manager, Bobby Chang, unveiled a plan that will allow partners to benefit from downloaded material, as well as a plan to close down copyright infringing user accounts. The plan will direct users to the partner companies' websites that show promotional material, yet still allow the user to download the material that they are looking for. The logic is that for the amount of sales lost from the downloads, the partner company will be compensated by the amount of people who buy the advertised material on its site. Rapidshare has been testing this method with a small portion of users since the beginning of 2010.

New iPad Orders Now Shipping April 12th

It seems that demand for the iPad may ben strong, despite some having reservations about how useful the new device will actually be (you can find out what OCC members think in the Forums). Apple initially started taking pre-orders for the iPad on March 12th, promising delivery on launch day (that's April 3rd for anyone who hasn't been paying attention). As the big day approaches Apple has now pushed back the shipping date of any new iPad orders to April 12th, which suggests that order volumes may have been high enough for it to sell out of its initial inventory.

Today also saw screenshots of some of the apps we can expect to see on the iPad. They show that developers will be looking to make good use of the increased screen area of the device when compared to the iPhone, but whether that will be enough for those more cynical among us to warm to the device is hard to say.

Older PS3s to Lose Install Other OS Option

Well, it seems that older, or "fat", Playstation 3 consoles will soon lose the ability to install another operating system. The next update to the PS3, Firmware 3.21, will cut out the ability on all consoles to install another OS, like Linux. The update will launch on April 1st, which may seem like an April Fool's Joke, but Sony has reassured people it is an actual update. The main reason the ability is on the cutting floor? "Security concerns" is the one given, though it feels a bit forced. I do not like the loss of the option to install another OS, even though I haven't used the feature, but I am sure other people will be quite upset at this news. You can, of course, decide to skip the update but you will lose out on access to the Playstation Network and online multiplayer games.

So what do you guys think? Is the loss of the 'install other OS' feature a dealbreaker or can you go without having Linux on your PS3?

1100 Communities Interested in Google Broadband

Google announced on Friday that more than 1,100 communities have applied to receive the fiber network that the internet giant plans to roll out soon. Google will install the broadband network for free, providing speeds up to 1GB/s. In addition, there were over 190,000 letters sent from individuals to support their communities. Google will announce the winner by the end of the year after site surveys and talking with local officials. Some communities have done their best to get noticed through stunts such as renaming their town and jumping into a freezing lake.

NVIDIA GF104 Specifications Leak

It was only yesterday that NVIDIA released its first Fermi GPUs and they were hot, powerful and power hungry. Now NVIDIA are readying up its GF104 cards. Apparently the information about GF104 is sketchy, but here is what we know so far:

GeForce GTX 480 GeForce GTX 470

GeForce GTS 450

GeForce GTS 440 GeForce GTS 430
Die Size 529 mm2 529 mm2 320 mm2 320 mm2 320 mm2
Shader units 480 448 256 256 192
ROPs 48 40 32 32 24
TMUs 64 64 64 64 ?
GPU GF100 GF100 GF104 GF104 GF104
Transistors 3200M 3200M ? ? ?
Memory Size 1536 MB 1215 MB 1024 MB 1024 MB ?
Memory Bus Width 384 bit 320 bit 256 bit 256 bit 192 bit
Core Clock 700 MHz 607 MHz ? ? ?
Memory Clock 924 MHz 837 MHz ? ? ?
Price $499 $349 ~$250 ~$200 ~$160

As can be seen, the GTS 450 is aiming at the ATI Radeon HD 5830 while the GTS 430 will be aiming for the Radeon HD 5770 and the GTS 440 will probably just be a 450 with lowered clocks to fill in the price gap. The naming scheme seems to be running out of names, because NVIDIA will supposedly be releasing more derivatives such as the GF106 and GF108. So far, details aren't much at all but release should be scheduled for some time around June.
