Samsung begins sampling 32GB DDR3 modules :: Posted by THRASHER2
DRAM dominator company Samsung has proudly announced that it started to send out samples of its first 32GB memory modules which are the industry's highest-density RDIMMs out there. The new 32GB DDR3 module makes use of 36 dual-die 40nm-class 4Gb DRAMs, it works at 1066 MHz and operates at 1.35V (if we're not mistaking that's what the PC3L means).

Two-way servers equipped with the new memory will be able to boast up to 384GB of RAM, while four-way servers will have a maximum of 2TB of memory.

"Samsung continues to set the pace in advanced memory for high-end server applications by offering 40nm-class 32GB memory modules to reach previously unattainable levels of system capacity," said Soo-In Cho, president and general manager of Samsung Electronics' Memory Division. "In just 10 months, Samsung has now secured the best competitive advantage with the broadest portfolio of 40nm-class DDR3 based memory solutions in the industry since the 40nm-class DRAM was first produced last July."

Samsung's 32GB RDIMMs will enter mass production in April.

AMD has kicked off this week by debuting its new Opteron 6000 series server platform which includes the new Opteron 6100 8-core and 12-core processors (codename Magny-Cours). The chips themselved started shipping last month but AMD waited until just before the end of Q1 to make them official in order to make sure OEMs are ready with Opteron 6100-powered machines.

AMD's Opteron 6000 platform targets the 2P and 4P market, is aimed to be used for virtualization, database and HPC applications, and beside the new CPUs, it features the G34 socket (1974 pins), and 5600 Series chipset with I/O virtualization capability, HyperTransport 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0. The Opteron 6100 processors are manufactured on 45nm technology and boast four HyperTransport (3.0) links, a 4 channel integrated DDR3 memory controller, and up to 12MB of L3 cache.

"As AMD has done before, we are again redefining the server market based on current customer requirements," said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Embedded Divisions, AMD. "The AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform signals a new era of server value, significantly disrupts todayÂ’s server economics and provides the performance-per-watt, value and consistency customers demand for their real-world data center workloads."

The Opteron 6000 platform is already adopted by HP, Dell, Acer Group, Cray, and SGI who are releasing systems based on it.

Cisco releases 11 security patches for IOS and UCM :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cisco has released a security advisory which describes 11 flaws that may leave their IOS networking software open to malicious access.

The company is advising administrators to check with their maintenance teams regarding compatibility before installing the updates. The patches are designed to correct a number of security flaws within the IOS firmware on Cisco routers and switches, as well as an issue with the Unified Communications Manager.

These flaws were described to allow attacks such as remote code execution and DoS (denial-of-service) on vulnerable hardware.

This update comes at a time when security firms are all warning corporations about the growing threat of targeted attacks and malicious software designed to infect systems through software exploits (as well as targeted social engineering).

Security experts have cited that regular maintenance and updates are the primary steps that businesses are required to take in order to have any chance of preventing attacks... and whilst it is not as common place as malware for PCs, router software does also get targeted.
