AMD's Takes The Fight To Intel With Renewed Server Offensive
AMD launched its new Maranello server platform and accompanying 8-12 core Magny-Cours processors today. The new products are two prongs of a three-pronged offensive AMD has launched at its rival. Both Magny-Cours and Maranello are evolutionary products—we'll have to wait for Bulldozer to really shake things up—but the CPU manufacturer has aggressively overhauled and flattened its price structure. That revamp is the third prong and it's the anchor of AMD's 2010-2011 strategy.More Cores, Different SocketMagny-Cours

Toshiba Goes Stylish With 1TB Canvio Portable Hard Drive
1TB may not quite be the new black, but it's getting close. And that's just the way we like it. As capacities increase across the board, more and more external HDD makers are looking to get the biggest drive(s) possible into their products. Toshiba isn't as popular as Western Digital or LaCie in the external hard drive market, but a 1TB drive with good looks may go a long way in changing that. The new Canvio is a bold new step for Toshiba, and if they continue to style their drives like this, we may have to re-consider

Asus Reading SATA 6G and USB 3.0 Intel Motherboards
We've just received some interesting images and information regarding a couple of motherboards Asus has coming down the pipeline. The two motherboards you see pictured below are the P7P55D-E Premium and the P6X58D Premium, for Intel's Lynnfield (Core i5, Core i7 800 series) and Bloomfield (Core i7 900 series) platforms, respectively.
As its name suggests, the P7P55D-E Premium is built around Intel's P55 Express chipset and sports an LAG1156 socket for Core i5 and Core i7 800 series processors. Alternatively, the P6X58D Premium features Intel's X58 Express chipset and an LGA1366 socket, for more powerful Core i7 900 series processors.
It is not the core logic on these products that differentiates them from other motherboards, however. It is their implementation of SATA 6G and USB 3.0 support. Both SATA 6G and USB 3.0 build upon their respective base technologies by offering vastly increased bandwidth--up to 6Gbp/s for SATA 6G and 4.8Gb/s for USB 3.0.
Both of these motherboards feature a Marvell 9123 6G SATA controller, which powers a pair of white SATA ports on the boards. In addition, instead of connecting the controller directly to the PCIe Gen 1 lanes available in the P55 chipset, the Marvell 6G SATA controller is linked to the chipset via a PLX8613 PCI Express Gen 2 bridge. The PLX8613 is connected to the P55 via four Gen 1 PCIe lanes, but links to the Marvell controller via single Gen 2 lane, offer up to 500MB/s of peak bandwidth.
The same is true of the NEC USB 3.0 controller found on both boards. The USB 3.0 controller passes through the PLX8613 as well.
According to Asus, the SATA 6G and USB 3.0 implementations on the P7P55D-E Premium and P6X58D Premium motherboards eliminates a potential performance bottleneck that could occur with the controllers connected directly to the chipset via a single PCIe x1 lane.
We hope to have both of these motherboards in the lab soon, and will keep you posted as more information becomes available.

The base plate is made of chrome plated electrolytic C110 copper and includes high flow fittings in both 1/2" and 3/8" sizes. To ensure the whole package stays cool, a heatpipe runs along the bottom and connects to a power mosfet heatsink.

According to Nvidia, you can expect temps as low as 50C on the GTX 480 and just over 30C on the GTX 470, though obviously your results will depend on your setup.
Not letting that extra cooling go to waste, EVGA bumped up the core and memory clockspeeds on the GTX 480 variant to 750MHz and 3800MHz (effective), respectively, while the GTX 470 part cruises along at 650MHz (core) and 3402MHz (effective memory).
Look for the GTX 470 and 480 Hydro Copper FTW cards to sell for for $500 and $650, respectively.

No matter what the explanation, this will come as a blow to those few who purchased a PS3 specifically with the intention of installing Linux. AT&T Brings 24Mbps Internet To All 120 U-verse Markets
Timing has a way of spicing things up, and this is definitely one ofthose cases. During the same week that Verizon announced that theywould be cutting back on future FiOS roll outs, AT&T has announcedsomething in the opposite vein. As of this week, AT&T is giving itsU-verse users an even faster broadband choice, with U-verse High SpeedInternet Max Turbo now available in every single U-verse market--all120 of them. This option gives broadband speeds of up to 24Mbpsdownstream and up to 3Mbps upstream, which is far greater than moststandard cable connections.Available today for AT&T U-verse residential and small businesscustomers, Max Turbo is the fastest Internet package available fromAT&T, and previously it was only available in Austin/San Antonio,TX and St. Louis, MO. Mark Collins, senior vice president of data and voice products, AT&T Mobility andConsumer Markets, seemed pretty excited about the news: "Max Turbo isthe latest example of how we're bringing consumers andsmall businesses the choice of better services and faster speeds withAT&T U-verse. With a large majority of U-verse TV customersbundling U-verseInternet, we know we're giving our customers the broadband choice theywant. Customers value our high-quality and integrated bundle ofaward-winning U-verse TV, fast Internet and voice and wirelessservices, and they love that we're continually adding more to improvetheir experience — more features, more apps and more speed."

The best part is that the new service doesn't cost all that much morethan a typical Internet connection; it's available to residentialcustomers for $65 per month when bundled with U-verse TV, while smallbusiness customers can get it alone for $95 per month. Another bonus tosigning up for the service is that users can hop online for free at theover 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots across the U.S., many of whichprovide access in airports. We're all for more Internet competition, sonow we're just hoping that AT&T expands the U-verse footprint asVerizon withdraws.

US Air isn't saying whichfive they are, but they'll have Gogo logos everywhere when you board(so be on the lookout!). From now until June 1, those fortunate enough to find themselves on aGogo flight will have one trial session given to them, and afterwards, the regular rates take effect. Gogo's pricing isn't that bad; forflights up to 1.5 hours, it's just $4.95 to hop online, while 1.5 - 3hour flights demand up to $9.95 and over 3 hours required up to $12.95.We just wish the service worked outside of the U.S., but at least Wi-Fiis finally coming to most airlines here. We'll take the baby steps, butwe won't stop wishing for more coverage. Have to make those skiesfriendly somehow!

I noticed when I went to my profile, I looked at the right hand side and I see there is a place called My Groups. I was wondering if you guys had anything planned for that? I guess my knowledge is limited as to how exactly it'll work on your forum software but I'm assuming you could have groups like Intel fans, AMD fans, ATI fans, nVidia fans, Windows fans, Apple fans, Gamer, IT, Overclocker, etc where people can join these groups and allow them to find other people with similar interests. I think it would be cool if you guys did something like that.

Sanyo's New Gorilla PNDs Track Your Location in 10 Seconds (Sort of)
According to Sanyo, all three models significantly shorten the time it takes to detect your current location. By analyzing signals for the "location information," "time information," and "trajectory information" from four different satellites, the new PNDs are able to pinpoint your location in as quick as 10 seconds after boot. Serving as somewhat of a wet blanket, however, Sanyo also says this can take several minutes depending on receiving conditions.

All three models also come with 16GB of memory, LED backlighting, detailed Maps with a 5m maximum zoom, landscape and portrait modes, and a handful of other marketing bullets. Where the three differ is mainly in size, with the mid-range NV-SB570DT sporting a 5-inch monitor (compared to 7-inch on the high-end model), a mono 1W speaker, and a VICS traffic module, the latter of which is not included in the entry-level NV-SB550DT.
