Sony halting OLED TV sales in Japan
Electronics giant Sony has decided to stop making OLED TVs for the Japanese market due to low adoption and increased interest and competition in the LCD TV market. Sony seemed like an OLED pioneer in 2007 when it announced the XEL-1 11-inch OLED TV (which debuted in Japan), but now it looks more skeptical about the rate at which OLED technology will move, at least in its home market.
At over $2,000 per unit, the XEL-1 certainly isn't a product for everyone and the economic crisis has surely slashed potential sales, but it's still disappointing that Sony had to resort to a complete halt in Japan. Despite this pause, Sony will continue to invest in OLED development and will sell OLED TVs in American and European markets so all is not lost. For now though, the company will focus on making more energy-efficient (LED backlit) LCD TVs and 3D TVs.
