Opera Mini claimed to have 50 million active users
Opera Software has today bragged a little with the latest milestone achieved by the Opera Mini mobile browser - 50 million unique monthly users, as recorded in January. The 50 million mark was reached just three months after Opera Mini topped 40 million users, so the software's growth accelerated quite rapidly recently thanks to adoption in every geographic location.
"Our original goal with Opera Mini was to make the Web available to everyone, regardless of their network or mobile phone. Fifty million active monthly users is a great start," says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera. "Opera's innovative nature and its popularity among users will help us make the mobile Web even more accessible and attractive to more people across the world."
Currently Opera is offering (for free) Opera Mini 4.2 and Opera Mini 5 beta 2, and is planning to show off Opera Mini for the iPhone next week at the Mobile World Congress.

Marvell targets high-end smartphones with ARMADA 618 processor
Marvell has continued its low-power processor offensive this week with the announcement of the ARMADA 618, a new SoC based on an ARM v7 design that's specifically aimed towards 'next-gen' HD-capable smartphones. This 12 by 12 mm chip includes a 1GHz Sheeva CPU, a 3D graphics core supporting DirectX, Open GL ES 2.0, and Open VG 1.1 (can render up to 45 million triangles per second), an integrated
video accelerator enabling encoding/decoding of 1080p video, an Image Signal Processor capable of 16MP image capture, as well as a cryptographic engine and security accelerator.
"Featuring a gigahertz CPU, 1080p full-HD video, 3D graphics, the industry's fastest LP-DDR, and optimized power for longer battery life, Marvell's ARMADA 618 application processor represents a dramatic leap forward in high-end, multimedia smartphones," said Ms. Weili Dai, Marvell's Co-founder and Vice President and General Manager of Marvell Semiconductor's Consumer and Computing Business Unit. "Importantly, the ARMADA 600 series of application processors gives our customers a common platform solution to build multiple products and formats for the always-on consumer--scaling from smartphones to eReaders to tablets without compromising either the multimedia performance or the battery life."
The ARMADA 618 is currently sampling to early customers and is set to make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress next week.

Veoh video site goes under
Despite being backed (financially) by a lot of big names, San Diego-based Veoh Networks hasn't managed to live up to its goal and has ended up filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is now awaiting liquidation. Veoh, who ran a free online service that provided TV and film studio content, independent productions, and user-generated videos, has let go of its last employees this week, after the last attempts at a sale or further investments were shattered.
According to Dmitry Shapiro, Veoh's founder and CEO, the company's demise can be blamed on the 'distraction' of the copyright infringement case filed by Universal Music Group (and won by Veoh last year), and the challenges of the broader macro-economic climate.
"I would like to thank all of my fellow team members and their families, our courageous, dedicated investors, our suppliers and attorneys, and all of the passionate people that have made it possible for us to be a part of this great revolution of social media," said Shapiro on his blog. "This is a critically important time in the evolution of the Internet as an open communications medium, and all of us at Veoh wish those companies that continue to innovate in the space, great success."
