Hardware Roundup: AMD ATI Radeon HD 5830 Edition

If the ten different AMD ATI Radeon 5000-series graphics card models were pieces to a puzzle, once you had them all laid out and put together you might notice there was a piece missing. Between the HD 5770 and 5850, ATI has a gap in its product lineup. With the introduction of the HD 5830, AMD now has filled the gap in the $240-$250 price range and we finally get to look at some real boards instead of rumors and leaks that have been popping up online as of late. Like it's bigger brother, the HD 5830 comes with 2.15 billion transistors and GDDR5 memory clocked at 1000MHz. Interestingly, the HD 5830 has a core clock speed of 800MHz as opposed to 725MHz on the HD 5850. However, the HD 5830 has fewer stream processors at 1120, 56 texture units and 16 ROPs. If you look at the product specification chart included in the OCC review, you'll notice these specs put it squarely in between the HD 5770 and the HD 5850. Google Under Scrutiny in Europe

Google is the latest company to fall under anti-monopoly investigation from the European Commission, with Microsoft and Intel recently receiving large fines. Google is even more dominant in search in the EU than in the US, with nearly 80% of searches. Complaints have been filed by three companies and revolve around the way Google displays search results. Google has been taking a lot of flak lately, with attacks against its planned book service and YouTube. Maybe if another company made a better search engine Google wouldn't be so dominant.

United States Broadband Adoption Lacking

A recent survey conducted in the US by the FCC reveals that roughly one third of the country doesn't have broadband internet. The main reason behind this was, unsurprisingly, the monthly cost of broadband access. The average bill is $41, and the speed that comes with it isn't on par with the rest of the world. Other reasons included not being able to understand the technology behind it or worrying about privacy, and having no need for high speed internet. One comment made by the FCC is that high speed internet at home will increase American competitiveness in the global marketplace, which doesn't seem to make much sense.
