IBM Launches Power7 Chip and Servers

IBM is launching its long-anticipated Power7 processor and systems based on the chip on Monday. The processor is a huge and risky step for IBM, integrating eight processing cores in one chip package, with each core capable of executing four "threads" helping to turn this individual chip into a virtual 32-core processor. In comparison, Intel's high-end Xeon processors typically have two threads per processing core.

The IBM announcement comes amid a flurry of activity in chips aimed at servers. On Monday, for example, Intel Corp. is expected to introduce a long-delayed version of its high-end Itanium product family, a separate product family from the x86 chips used in most personal computers and lower-priced servers.
