Lenovo readies the IdeaPad S10-3 and S10-3t netbooks
Remember the Pine Trail-based Lenovo netbook exposed by the FCC last month? Yes, that one, it's going to be officially called IdeaPad S10-3 and it will be released next month together with the S10-3t model. Both upcoming machines are powered by the Atom N450 (1.66 GHz), boast up to 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, GMA 3150 graphics, and feature a 10.1-inch screen, the one on the S10-3t having multi-touch support and the option of being rotated 180 degrees (first Pineview-powered convertible tablet?).

The IdeaPad S10-3 and S10-3t are loaded with Windows 7 and are said to include a 3G modem and GPS although we're not sure if these come as standard or are optional. More should be revealed very soon though as Lenovo will want to keep up with other manufacturers who are going to ship their Pine Trail netbooks in early January.

Ex Microsoft exec named US cybersecurity chief
Confirming some summer rumors, USA President Barack Obama has appointed Howard Schmidt as White House Cybersecurity Coordinator. Schmidt, who's the president of the Information Security Forum and a former Microsoft and eBay executive with over 40 years of experience in government, business and law enforcement, will have the task of managing cybersecurity activities across the US government so as to ensure the nation's progress in a safe IT environment.

The quest to name a cybersecurity chief was rather long for the Obama administration, as earlier this year Melissa Hathaway, who was initially expected to take the position, turned down the offer almost at the last minute in order to return to the private sector. Still, everything turned out good as, given his experience in IT security, Schmidt seems a very solid choice.

Nvidia delivers 195.30 beta driver for Linux
Just a week after releasing the 'certified' 190.53 driver, Nvidia has rolled out a new beta driver specifically aimed for Linux users. This latest version (195.30) has support for GeForce 6 and newer cards, and features:

- Fixed a performance regression with non-antialiased text in KDE4.
- Enabled GPU acceleration for many RENDER compositing operations that were previously processed in software, including conjoint and disjoint blending modes and component alpha blending.
- Added experimental GPU acceleration of the RENDER CompositeTrapezoids operation (supported on the GeForce GTX series or newer products). This can be enabled at runtime by running - nvidia-settings -a AccelerateTrapezoids=1
- Fixed a bug in the VDPAU overlay-based presentation queue that caused high CPU usage during "put bits" operations when more than two surfaces were queued.
- Updated 'nvidia-settings --query all' to report all available attributes queryable through all NV-CONTROL target types.

The 32bit version of the 195.30 Linux driver can be downloaded here, while the 64bit release is here.

Netbook shipments up 103% in 2009
Market research and consulting firm DisplaySearch is expecting 2009 to record portable PC sales of $109.4 billion, down 12% compared to 2008. Despite the revenue drop, unit shipments will be 16% higher this year, with the biggest increase coming from netbooks. DisplaySearch's calculations show that in 2008 netbook unit sales topped 16.4 million, while in 2009, no less than 33.3 million units (up 103% on-year) are to be delivered.

"Mini-notes continue to be a significant piece of the notebook PC pie, in terms of both units and revenue. However, our long-term outlook is that the mini-note share of the notebook PC market has stabilized, and will remain at approximately 20% through 2011 before starting to erode," said John F. Jacobs, Director of Notebook Market Research. "While mini-notes offer lower ASPs and are thinner and lighter than notebook PCs, the performance of larger notebook PCs continues to improve while prices continue to steadily decline, increasing the performance gap while narrowing the price gap."

For 2010 DisplaySearch is predicting that notebook PC sales will slip a little and reach $108 billion, while netbooks will slow their growth and top shipments of 39.7 million units.
