Gigabyte delivers new P55 board BIOSes to fix iPhone sync problem
For well over a month now there have been iPhone users complaining about syncing problems with their shiny and more or less new Intel P55-equipped, Core i5/i7-powered system running Windows 7 (64bit). As it seems, while the iPhone is 'seen' by the PC, when it's time to sync, an '0xE8000065' error is displayed signaling a connectivity problem. Nasty right?
While Apple, as well as Microsoft and Intel said they were investigating the issue, Gigabyte stepped up late last week and fixed things with the release of new, beta BIOS updates. The BIOSes are for the company's first wave of P55 motherboards as well as for the USB 3.0/SATA 6.0 Gbps-ready P55A boards which are barely starting to reach stores. The BIOS fix was confirmed to be working so it may be that other motherboard manufacturers will soon follow Gigabyte's lead and resolve the iPhone sync too.

Intel grabs more CPU market share in Q3, passes 80% again
Double digit growth - these are the magic words for the PC microprocessor market in Q3, with IDC reporting that this past quarter CPU shipment went up 23% sequentially, while revenue rose 14% and reached $7.4 billion. Mobile processors were again the growth gurus, going up 35.7% compared to Q2, while desktop and server chips rose 11.4% and 12.2%, respectively.
Thanks to great Atom sales Intel gained the most in Q3 and went up 2.2% to reach a market share or 81.1%. In the mean time, AMD lost 2% and settled at 18.7%, while VIA climbed 0.2%.
"The story about 3Q09 leads with Atom processors being sold in mini-notebooks (aka netbooks) manufactured and sold in China," said Shane Rau, director of Semiconductors: Personal Computing research at IDC. "While Atom processors led the PC processor market to reach record unit shipments, on the revenue side, their low average selling price led to notable price erosion, more than 7%. Most meaningful about 3Q09 is that, since PC processor shipments overall just slightly exceeded shipments in 3Q08 - which was itself a record quarter at the time - we know that the processor market is recovering."
The good numbers delivered in Q3 have 'convinced' IDC to raise its forecast for CPU shipments in 2009 to over 300 million units, and a unit growth rate of 1.5% compared to 2008.
