Microsoft and Yahoo announce search/ad deal
After months and months of on/off negotiations Microsoft and Yahoo have finally announced that they have reached an agreement on a major search and advertising partnership. Planned to last 10 years, the collaboration will see Microsoft get a license for Yahoo's core search technologies and the ability to use them for its platform, with Bing set to become the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites.
As for Yahoo, it will be the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies' premium search advertisers. Self-serve advertising for both companies will be fulfilled by Microsoft's AdCenter platform, with each expected to maintain its own separate display advertising business and sales force.
"Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company," said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO. "Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, weأ¢آ€آ™ve created breakthrough innovation and features. This agreement with Yahoo! will provide the scale we need to deliver even more rapid advances in relevancy and usefulness. Microsoft and Yahoo! know there's so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search."
Through this deal, which, please note doesn't cover email or instant messaging, Microsoft will have to pay Yahoo through a revenue sharing agreement on traffic generated on Yahoo's network of both owned and operated (O&O) and affiliate sites.
If all goes well and anti-trust sentinels approve, the agreement between Microsoft and Yahoo will take effect as soon as early 2010.

The quarter ended July 3rd also saw the hard and solid state drive manufacturer make a $1.9 billion revenue, up sequentially but down by $100 million of the same period of 2008, and shipped no less than 40 million drives, almost 5 million more on-year and almost as many as Seagate (40.6 million).

Movie studios sue the Pirate Bay, again
Still going strong three months after an initial verdict sentenced four of its 'supporters' to one year in jail and the paying of a 2.7 million Euro fine, the Pirate Bay is once again sued by movie studios in an effort to have it taken offline.
Yesterday, 10 studios filed a complaint in the Stockholm District Court claiming that the Pirate Bay continues to provide people with the means to illegally download copyrighted content. In addition to targeting the torrent tracker, the movie studios are also going after Black Internet AB, the company that provides it with much-needed bandwidth.
This new lawsuit comes very close to the potential sale of the Pirate Bay to Global Gaming Factory X, a company which aims to turn the site around and make it a legitimate download service which would pay both content owners and file sharers. Interestingly-enough, the acquisition is now being put into question as apparently GGF isn't able to raise the money required. The twisted TPB story continues so stay tuned for updates.
