Lexar officially intros the M225 solid state drives
As it promised earlier this month, Lexar Media has today announced its newest solid state drive line-up, the Crucial M225. The 2.5-inch M225s make use of MLC (multi-level cell) NAND flash memory, come in 64, 128, and 256GB capacities, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, and maximum read and write speeds of 250 and 200 MB/s, respectively.
"By upgrading their system with a solid-state drive, mobile computer users will enjoy a faster, more rugged system with storage built for mobility. The fact that SSDs don't have any moving parts makes Crucial solid-state drives quieter, cooler, and more durable than traditional hard drives," said Robert Wheadon, Lexar Media's senior worldwide product marketing manager.
The 64, 128 and 256GB Crucial M225 SSDs are backed by a five-year warranty and have recommended price tags of $169.99/أ‚آ£104.99/أ¢آ‚آ¬120.99, $329.99/أ‚آ£201.99/أ¢آ‚آ¬143.99 and $599.99/أ‚آ£367.99/أ¢آ‚آ¬424.99.

Kingston comes up with first 256GB USB flash drive
After last month's rush to unveil a 128GB flash drive, Kingston has now stepped up to take the capacity crown by announcing the first USB drive providing 256GB of storage space. Still boasting the slow USB 2.0 interface, the DataTraveler 300 measures 70.68 x 22.37 x 16.45 mm, features a cap-less design thanks to the sliding USB connector, has Windows ReadyBoost support, provides read and write speeds of up to 20 and 10 MB/s, respectively, and comes with the Password Traveler security software.
"The DataTraveler 300 will enable users to carry huge volumes of data with them everywhere they go - up to 365 CDs for example. That's one album for every day of the year, and it demonstrates how far flash technology has developed," said Kirsty Miller, Product Marketing Manager - Consumer, Kingston Technology Europe. "Business users and consumers can also safeguard their data by initialising the Password Traveler software which will allow them to password protect their data in a privacy zone without the need of administrator rights."
The 256GB drive is backed by a five-year warranty, and is set to cost about أ‚آ£565.67 / $934.2 / 656.6 Euro without VAT. And yes, that's more than most 256GB 2.5-inch solid state drives. Ouch.

Music service Spotify moves ahead with its US expansion plans
As revealed in May, music streaming service Spotify is aiming to cross the Atlantic this year and try its luck and business model in the US market. Spotify is currently available in Europe where it offers a catalogue of over 6 million tracks which can be streamed to users either free, but with occasional ads or without ads for a monthly fee.
The dual revenue model used by Spotify has proven quite successful as the service already has over 2 million users after less than one year since launch. To continue Spotify's growth its two Swedish founders are gunning to make it available in the US, and preparations for this move are being made as we speak. Deals with content owners are being negotiated and, if everything goes smooth, Spotify could launch in the US as soon as this quarter or in Q4.
