New York State Attorney General vigilant with false online advertisers
The State of New York is fining a company that performs Plastic Surgery a whopping $300,000 for posting anonymous reviews about itself online. Employees at the company "Lifestyle Lift" were asked to post positive reviews of the company on various websites, as well as message boards. They even went as far sometimes as to try and get negative reviews taken down.

Attorney General for the state of New York, Andrew Cuomo, said that the firm was guilty of deceptive commercial practices, false advertising, and fraudulent and illegal conduct.

"This company's attempt to generate business by duping consumers was cynical, manipulative and illegal," he said. "My office has and will continue to be at the forefront in protecting consumers against emerging fraud and deception, including 'astroturfing', on the internet."

But that is not all - the company has even set up fake websites such as myfaceliftstory.com, once again to give false reviews about the services at hand. Staff were specifically recruited to fill forum boards on these sites - information that was leaked through official company emails.

"Friday is going to be a slow day - I need you to devote the day to doing more postings on the web as a satisfied client," read one message. Hardly subtle. Another email directed a Lifestyle Lift employee to "put your wig and skirt on and tell them about the great experience you had".

Only last year Cuomo took on Dell and fined them for fraud and false advertising, and last month McAfee and Symantec were fined $375,000 each for abusing their pricing schemes.

O2 recalls TG01 just weeks after dأƒآ©but in Germany
Spanish cellular giant Telefonica's spouse company O2 has run into trouble in Germany, having launched Toshiba's TG01 smartphone earlier this month, as an unfortunate set of circumstances has lead to a rather disturbing number of the devices to be infected with malware fresh from the stores.

A O2 spokesperson has said that whilst the TG01-shipped virus does not appear to have caused any harm, the carrier wished to cease sales and replace all sold phones with disinfected devices.

As yet it's not known how the virus ended up on the phones - pre-loaded or introduced on the memory card. Details of the virus are also unknown. Orange began selling the TG01 exclusively in the UK last week, but has yet to report any similar issues. Best advice if you just bought yourself a TG01 is to go and get it checked out.

Is Apple ready to prematurely break contract with O2?
Mobile Today, a publication in the United Kingdom has released an article that reports Apple in a position poised to take away O2's exclusivity agreement for the iPhone 3G device before the end of August.

According to the report, the iPhone 3G will be going out to Orange and T-Mobile in an effort to boost the product's sales. Mobile Today's sources say that the exclusivity is meant to break as Apple prematurely ends the two company's 24 month deal as early as August - although O2 will still keep exclusivity for their 3G-S device.

Orange and T-Mobile are both already selling the iPhone in various other countries across Europe and there is no reason for them not to be keen for a similar launch in the UK. Mobile Today claims that sources said "O2 has been furious with the news and is concerned potential rivals will undercut its prices on the older model."

O2 updated their Twitter in response to the rumour, stating "we have a multi-year exclusive with Apple - I'd suggest speaking to them about this."

Apple declined to comment (as always), claiming: "Apple doesn't comment on rumour or speculation."

Neither Orange nor T-Mobile representatives for the UK were available for comment at the time of writing.

Graphics chip sales to drop 12% this year, says Jon Peddie Research
However you spin it 2009 is a really tough year, with demand in most markets dropping considerable compared to the previous year. That too is the case in the graphics market, which, according to research and consulting Jon Peddie Research, will experience its worst ever year-on-year drop in 2009.

JPR predicts that graphics chip shipments this year will reach about 328.4 million units, and that translates into a 12% drop compared to 2008, and even a 6.6% slip when looking at 2007's numbers. Fortunately, the storm clouds are expected to exit, stage left quite quickly, with JPR's forecast pointing out to a GPU shipment growth of 21.5% in 2010, and one of 12% in 2011. We just have to get through this year.

Corsair announces the Indilinx-powered Extreme series SSDs
We're sure that the Samsung controllers used on the Performance family drives are just fine but, since this is apparently the trend, Corsair has now also introduced a family of SSDs that feature Indilinx's Barefoot controller. Coming in 32, 64, and 128GB capacities, the Extreme family 2.5-inch drives boast MLC (multi-level cell) NAND memory, have a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, 64MB of cache memory, and offer maximum read and write speeds of 240 and 170 MB/s, respectively.

"The new Extreme Series SSDs are ideal for use as primary drives in desktop and notebooks systems, and also for RAID 0 configurations in high-performance desktops for enthusiasts who want extreme performance."

The X32, X64 and X128 SSDs are backed by a two-year warranty, and are now listed (as out of stock) at prices of around أ‚آ£116.74 / $192, أ‚آ£179.27 / $295, أ‚آ£305.56 / $502.
