Seagate unveils Mac-friendly FreeAgent drives
Seagate is out to show Mac users some love by introducing a bunch of FreeAgent series storage solutions just for them - the FreeAgent Go for Mac, FreeAgent Go Pro for Mac, and a 2TB FreeAgent Desk for Mac. First up, the FreeAgent Go for Mac portable hard drive measures 80 x 130 x 12.50 mm, weights just 160 grams, has a USB 2.0 interface and comes in 250, 320 and 500B flavors priced at $99.99, $119.99 and $149.99, respectively.

The FreeAgent Go Pro for Mac is similar to the non-Pro drives but has its spinners working at 7200 RPM, has USB and FireWire (400, 800) connectors, is bundled with docking station, and costs $129.99, $149.99 and $189.99, for the 250, 320 and 500GB models.

Measuring 185 x 37.5 x 152 mm, the 2TB FreeAgent Desk comes with a brushed aluminum arctic silver finish, works at 7200 RPM, has USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and 800 ports, and costs $339.99.

Western Digital intros the second-gen My Book World Edition NAS
Seagate arch-rival Western Digital has now rolled out the 'new and improved' My Book World Edition II NAS (network attached storage), aiming to provide even more storage for your home network. The new devices come with 2 and 4TB of storage space, weights just about 2.5kg, have two GreenPower HDDs in a RAID1 configuration, and feature automatic backup, easy remote access, iTunes server support, and both Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 connectivity.

"Families have more and more digital media like movies, photos and music to store, share and protect. Having two drives inside the My Book World Edition II network storage system, instantaneously and automatically duplicating data, offers consumers the peace of mind of double safe, real-time protection of their valuable content," said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group. "Families can relax knowing their valuable media is backed up while enjoying the ability to stream their content to a plethora of different devices from PCs and Macs to PS3s, Xbox 360s and the latest connected TVs."

The 2 and 4TB My Book World Edition II drives are backed by a three-year warranty and have recommended price tags of $399.99 and $699.99, respectively.

HTC officially announces the Hero Android smartphone
Putting rumors and leaks to an end, HTC has today revealed its third Android smartphone, the 'Hero'. Seen below, the new quad-band GSM/7.2 Mbps HSPA handheld measures 112 x 56.2 x 14.35 mm, weights 135 grams, and features a 3.2-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 320x480 pixels (and multi-touch), a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus, a 528 MHz-clocked Qualcomm MSM7200A chip, 512MB of ROM and 288 MB of RAM, and a microSD slot.

The Hero also has built-in GPS, a digital compass, WiFi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a 3.5mm audio jack, a dedicated search button, and comes powered by Android OS 1.5. The Hero is also the first Android-loaded smartphone to ship with Adobe Flash support.

The HTC Hero will be available in white and brown as soon as next month in Europe, with Asia and North America set to get it later this year.

Qik for Android now available
Users of Android smartphones can start to enjoy the Qik live video sharing service as an alpha version of the Qik app has been released via the Android Marketplace. The preview software works on devices with the Android 1.5 OS and will enable uses to do live streaming with live chat, and share videos to Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

Qik is also available for Symbiam and Windows Mobile phones so check out qik.com for more.

Adobe releases new security update for Shockwave Player
Adobe Systems has just released a new update for Shockware Player to fix a critical vulnerability which was reported by Paul Kurczaba through TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative. The issue resolved affected Shockwave Player 11.5.0.596 and earlier versions, and could have allowed eVIL individuals to take control of affected systems.

Adobe advises Windows users to uninstall the vulnerable Shockware Player they have, restart the PC, and install version 11.5.0.600 - available here, as soon as possible.

Green House announces new 2.5-inch SSD line-up
Green House has now revealed its second-generation MLC-based 2.5-inch solid state drives. Part of the GH-SSD X GS-2MA family, the new flashy drives come in 32, 64, 128 and 256GB flavors, features a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, 64MB of buffer/cache memory, a MTBF (mean time before failure) of 2.5 million hours, and a maximum power consumption of 2.75W.

According to their maker, the 32 and 64GB models will deliver read and write speeds of up to 180 and 90 MB/s, respectively, while the 128 and 256GB drives will top 220 and 140 MB/s. The SSDs are expected to become available next month. No word on pricing though.

Pioneer to release new slim external DVD burner
Car electronics specialist Pioneer has just unveiled the DVR-XD09J, a compact new external DVD writer for those who need optical storage on the go. Seen below, the drive measures 133 (W) x 14.8 (H) x 133 (D) mm, weights 240 grams, has USB 2.0 connectivity, and 2MB worth of buffer memory.

The upcoming release can write DVD-R/+R at 8x, DVD-R/+R DL and DVD-RW/+RW at 6x, DVD-RAM at 5x, and CD-R, CD-RW at 24x, and is bundled with CyberLink's Power2Go 6, InstantBurn 5, MediaShow 4, and PowerBackup 2. Pioneer's DVR-XD09J is expected to arrive, at first in Japan, early next month.

Toshiba lets loose more Satellite series laptops
In addition to releasing a few new L series models, Toshiba has also announced the roll out of some fresh Satellite A, M, P and U family laptops, which aim to deliver a good mix between multimedia performance, style and eco-efficiency.

The 13-inch Satellite U500/U505, 14-inch M500/M505, 16-inch A500/A505 and 18.4-inch P500/P505 are available with AMD or Intel processors, include LED-illuminated Feathertouch multimedia command keys, eSATA/USB combo ports with the USB Sleep-and-Charge function, and feature 16:9 HD TruBrite widescreen LCDs, keyboards with a black matte finish, multi-touch touchpads, and the Power-saving Eco Utility button which enables users to monitor and adjust their power consumption and settings in real-time.

"Toshiba is the first manufacturer to deliver a fully redesigned and brand new line of consumer laptops specifically for this new economy," said Ron Smith, vice president of marketing, Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products Division. "This new portfolio of mobility and entertainment laptops is the result of listening to consumer demands. We focused on incorporating premium new features and style elements at price points that make sense for everyone, whether they need a new laptop for home, work or school."

Shuttle offers the X50 All-in-One PC barebone
XPC maker Shuttle has stepped up the barebone game by releasing a customizable All-in-One PC based on its X 5000TA desktop. The X50 Barebone comes in both black or white, features a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a dual-core 1.6GHz Atom 330 CPU, and provides users the option of installing up to 2GB of RAM and one HDD or SSD.

The 3.6cm thick X50 has GMA 950 integrated graphics, includes Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel camera, a card reader, and is bundled with a 65 Watt power supply.

"The market introduction of the X50 Barebone has enabled customers to adapt Shuttleأ¢آ€آ™s All-in-One-PC even more flexibly to their own requirements," says Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer Handels. "For sophisticated technical users it can be built in only a few steps."

The X50 Barebone should be hitting stores any day now and cost about 361 Euro, without taxes.

HP readies the 13-inch ProBook 4310s business laptop
HP has now revealed that it is going to serve small and midsize businesses and mobile professionals a new ProBook notebook next month. Weighting in 1.96kg, the 13.3-inch ProBook 4310s will come with a glossy noir or merlot finish, and boast an Intel (Celeron/Pentium/Core 2) CPU, up to 8GB of RAM, and either integrated graphics or an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330.

The portable machine also packs a DVD/Blu-Ray drive, an ExpressCard slot, a dual-array microphone, a webcam, a multi-card reader, HDMI connectivity, and can be equipped with a fingerprint reader.
