LG announces W53 SMART LCD monitor line-up
LG has now introduced a new series of LCD monitors, the W53 SMART, which includes models going from 18.5 to 27-inch, with all those boasting a 21.5-inch or larger panel offering Full HD (1920 x 1080) picture. The W53 SMART monitors have contrast ratios of up to 50,000:1, a response time of 2ms and include features like Auto Brightness which will automatically adjust brightness and picture settings based on the ambient light in the room and the content displayed, Cinema Mode, which blacks out everything on the screen except the video that's running, and a timer that can be customized to let the user know when they've spent too much time in front of the screen.
"LG conducted extensive research throughout Europe and Asia, and learned that one major complaint people had about their monitors was eyestrain from the screen being either too bright or too dark," said B.B. Hwang, President and CEO of LG Electronics Business Solutions Company. "Because of this, LG's W53 SMART Monitors are packed with the world's first full suite of intelligent features that optimize the screenأ¢آ€آ™s brightness to reduce eyestrain. This also significantly reduces power consumption by lowering the intensity of the backlight."
According to their maker, the W53 SMART are going on sale this month.

New Laptop Hunters ad takes another jab at Apple
A new ad in the Microsoft 'sponsored' Laptop Hunters series has been released this past week and, wouldn't you know it, just like in the first ad, a HP machine is the purchase choice. In this ad, the "technically-savvy" Giampaolo is looking for a laptop that offers a good mix of portability, battery life and power for under $1,500. The search for the laptop obviously includes a look at a MacBook and while it is deemed "sexy," Giampaolo says he doesn't want to pay for the brand but for the computer.
In the end, he finds a HP HDX with a 2.4 GHz Intel CPU and 4GB of RAM for the desired price and gets the money to purchase it. Another happy PC customer and another slap for Apple in these money-short times.

Chip sales down 7.6% in February
According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, chip sales have taken another beating from the economic crisis in February. The second month of this year has seen semiconductor revenue reach $14.2 billion, down 7.6% sequentially and down 30.4% on-year.
"The global semiconductor industry is going through one of the steepest corrections in its history," said SIA President George Scalise. "While it would be premature to conclude that the sales decline has hit bottom, there are some indications that the rate of decline has moderated from the final quarter of 2008. The industry responded quickly to the changing market environment by curtailing production and reducing inventory as demand slowed in late 2008."
Scalise expects chip shipments and sales to continue to be below those in 2008 in the next few quarters, "with a gradual recovery to follow as the global economy recovers."

IBM, Sun negotiations said to have fallen through
After weeks of more or less confidential negotiations, IBM is now said have have withdrew its $7 billion offer to acquire Sun Microsystems. At the end of last week, after careful consideration, IBM decided to lower the price it was willing to pay per Sun share which obviously made Sun representatives bitter and claiming that they want to look for other options.
Since IBM had an exclusive negotiation agreement with Sun, it too was upset with the response received and simply decided to back down and take its toys (read, acquisition offer) with it. If this is just a power stance from IBM then a deal between the companies would still be possible, with IBM maybe paying even less than it was initially thought. If not then Sun is on its own to search for a buyer or remain independent and hope for the best. We'll see how this unfold.
