EU accuses Microsoft of harming the browser market
Less than one year after being fined 899 million Euro for failing to comply with the decisions of an antitrust case, Microsoft is once more targeted by the European Commission which accused the Redmond-based company of being harmful towards competition in the browser market through its decision of bundling Internet Explorer with its Windows operating system. According to the EC, Microsoft's has used its dominant position in the OS market to also gain control over most of the browser world although, one must note, IE has been doing worse these last few years as Mozilla's Firefox gained popularity. In December 2007 Opera Software, the developer of the Opera browser filed a complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission in which it militated for consumer choice and the support of open Web standards in Internet Explorer.

Given eight weeks to reply to the accusations, Microsoft may again find itself fined if the EC finds it guilty, and will be forced to take measures in order to respect EU competition laws. Microsoft went on to state that it intends to be in "full compliance with European law."

AMD prepares 3.1 GHz Phenom II for Q2
While lighter in terms of headcount, AMD is still going to be a busy bee this year as, following the release of its first two 45nm desktop CPUs, the Phenom II X4 940 BE and X4 920, it will also introduce the first DDR3-supporting Phenoms - six starting February. Following the initial AM3 roll-out, in Q2 AMD is expected to up the ante and put more pressure on Intel's Core 2 Quads with the release of the Phenom II X4 950, an AM3 CPU that will be clocked at 3.1 GHz, 100 MHz more than the X4 940 and 945.

Likely to be priced close around the $300 mark, the Phenom II X4 950 will have a dual-channel DDR3-1333 integrated memory controller, 6MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 125W. The 950 certainly won't get AMD much closer to the performance crown but it should give Intel some "food for thought" and us an alternative to Intel's Q9650.

Vodafone to trial 21Mbit/s HSPA+ devices
Vodafone has almost finished preparations for preliminary trials of its new ultra high-speed mobile broadband technology, that could eventually provide some consumers with a faster broadband connection - up to 21Mbit/s. This is the first news regarding the implementation of such technology since Huawei announced the development of capable HSPA+ devices back in 2008.

The European communications giant has already told the press that they can achieve a peak data transfer rate of 16Mbit/s with the new technology and that, by using a Mimo adapted device (giving it more antennas for time synchronous multiplexing transmissions - or more than one aerial in the sending and receiving devices to share the data load), they have managed to achieve the 21Mbit/s standard. Should the initial trials of the technology be a success as predicted, then Vodafone will deploy it into selected commercial networks (likely based around larger cities) for immediate consumer use.

"Successfully demonstrating a live HSPA+ high-speed connection has been a key milestone in continuing to build confidence in this new technology," said Vodafone global networks director Andy MacLeod.

Current wireless broadband packages will get users download speeds of up to a maximum of 7.2Mbit/s. The new technology should provide a steady 13Mbit/s and upwards in moderate conditions, but that at least 4Mbit/s will be the typical experience across the range of cell locations including urban environments.

T-Mobile takes to the London streets
T-Mobile hosted a spectacular surprise display event in London on Thursday - astounding commuters and tourists alike as 350 professional dancers performed various routines through the stretch of the concourse of Liverpool Street Station, at roughly 11am.

T-Mobile produced the dance using hidden cameras throughout the station, recording the reactions of the bemused onlookers during the three minute advertisement shoot, as a key aspect of their new "Life's for sharing" campaign.

The 'Flash Mob' of dancers all met almost instantly out of apparently nowhere to perform, but check out the video and see what you think!

Dell adds 256GB solid-state drive to XPS laptops
It was just this time last year when a solid-state drive would have seen a maximum capacity of 64GB but now we're seeing a completely different situation as the figure was completely trumped by Dell's new 256GB drive - a Samsung device that can be upgraded to via the customization pages for the new XPS M1330 and M1730 notebook models.

If you were to jump from the original XPS setup to the new 256GB configuration, it will add a whopping $400 to the cost of the unit. The issue with this is, Dell has previous (and still does) boast a 500GB 2.5" hard disk option for just $150 extra, so, take you pick ladies and gentlemen!

Dell also announced that the new drives should become more readily available on other ranges over the next few weeks. Solid-state technology is generally much faster than the original magnetic disk technology, however, it is still a significant price barrier to overcome. The additional cost of the devices are coming down slowly, and even popular flash manufacturer SanDsik said that its 240GB drives will start coming in at $499 - half of the price that it would have been 6 months ago!
