Intel's Core M chips headed to 20 Windows tablets, hybrids
Intel's new Core M chips -- which bring PC-like performance to paper-thin tablets -- will initially be in many Windows 8.1 tablets, but no Android devices are yet on the radar. The chips will be in five to seven detachable tablets and hybrids by year end, and the number of devices could balloon to 20 next year, said Andy Cummins, mobile platform marketing manager at Intel.

Adobe slates critical Reader security update for Tuesday
Adobe yesterday said it would issue security updates next week for its PDF viewer Reader as well as for Acrobat, its PDF creator, to fix critical flaws in the software on Windows and Apple's OS X. But it won't be updating Flash Player, its ultra-popular media playing program. If that holds through the end of the month -- if Adobe does not have to issue an "out-of-cycle," or emergency patch -- it would be a first for 2014.

Nvidia sues Samsung and Qualcomm, wants Galaxy sales blocked
Nvidia has sued Samsung and Qualcomm for allegedly infringing seven of its patents related to GPUs, and is trying to block the sale of some Samsung products in the U.S. The lawsuits open a new and unexpected front in the smartphone patent wars, which have already led to numerous court battles. In a blog post Thursday, Nvidia called it an "important day" for the company and said they are the first patent lawsuits it has initiated in its 21-year history.

Configuration errors lead to HealthCare.gov breach
The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) said that HealthCare.gov, the nation's health insurance enrollment website, was breached in July and that the attackers uploaded malware to the server. The breach, which is the first successful intrusion into the website, was discovered on August 25 by a CMS security team after an anomaly was detected in the security logs of one of the servers on the compromised system.

AT&T and Box to pave secure path to cloud content via VPN
Box and AT&T plan to lock down cloud file-sharing with a service that places enterprise content behind an AT&T VPN. The service, announced at the BoxWorks conference on Thursday and coming in the first half of next year, extends AT&T's NetBond technology to Box. It will be able to work in conjunction with the carrier's Toggle software, which separates business from personal content on mobile devices. Toggle with Box is scheduled to ship early next year.

Dell brings Google's Chrome OS to desktops
Dell will ship its first desktops with Google's Chrome operating system this month. The company's two Chromebox desktops are small, almost identical in features and can be easily held in one hand.
