Apple demands more than $2 billion from Samsung for patent infringement
Samsung should pay more than $2 billion for repeated infringement of Apple patents in more than 37 million smartphones sold in the U.S., a Silicon Valley jury was told Tuesday as a trial between the two companies got underway after more than two years of preparation. Apple opened its case by declaring, "the reason the damages are high is because the scope of Samsung's infringement is massive," but Samsung hit back soon after, telling the jury that the Apple figure was "a gross, gross exaggeration and an insult to your intelligence."

Google trumpets extra encryption for Gmail, but stays mum on other apps
Google recently trumpeted that it now encrypts Gmail messages while shuffling them among its data centers, an extra security layer aimed at thwarting government and criminal snoops, but didn't say if it applies this protection to its other applications. Asked for clarification, the company declined to comment. "We don't have more details to share beyond the Gmail news, but we're always working in strengthening and encrypting across more services and links," a spokeswoman said via email.

Mozilla, the maker of Firefox, went into damage control mode over the weekend in response to criticism that its new CEO had donated to a California anti-gay marriage ballot proposition in 2008.
