TweakTown Crytek at it again, say that it is "impossible" for next-gen consoles to compete with PCs The flip-flopping developers of Crysis are at it again, with Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli under an NDA from both Microsoft and Sony, where he can't reveal the details of next-gen consoles from the respective companies.
crytek_at_it_again_say_that_it_is_impossible_for_next_gen_consoles_to_compete_with_pcs
Yerli has still come out and spilled at least a couple of beans on the next-gen gaming powerhouses, saying that the hardware gap between PCs and next-gen consoles makes it "impossible" for the next-gen consoles to match, or beat current-gen PCs. Yerli says:
It's impossible to package $2,000-$3,000 worth of hardware into a mainstream-let's say $500-console. I'm not saying they are $500 consoles. They may launch a console at $2,000, but the consumer pricing is usually much lower than that. So, given consumer pricing, and given the cost of production of a gamer PC and the amount of wattage and power it needs, which is like a fridge, it's impossible.
Yerli believes the customizability that comes with PCs is what gives it a very large competitive edge against consoles, where he continues with "The whole modular way you can design a PC today with two, three, or four graphics cards in them, and you can water-cool them and overclock to infinity, that didn't exist even six or seven years ago." You can read more on his talk here, but I still don't understand - sure, the beta looked alright, but I think Battlefield 3 still out does it in terms of graphics. Maybe they're seriously holding back with graphics for the full release, but I just personally doubt it.

Apple hacked by same people who hacked Facebook, issues Mac software update Reports surfaced today stating that a small number of Apple's systems were hacked through the same zero-day Java exploit that Facebook's systems fell victim to in January. The source of the exploit is said to be the same as the one that managed to infect some of Facebook's systems. In the case of Apple, there is no evidence that any data was transmitted from Apple's systems.
apple_hacked_by_same_people_who_hacked_facebook_issues_mac_software_update
"Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers," the company said in a statement. "The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers. We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network." Apple has released an update to Mac OS X that will help protect customers from the malware. The update can be installed from the Software Update panel in the Mac App Store or downloaded directly from Apple's website. The source of the Facebook and Apple hacks is said to be a mobile development website known as iPhoneDevSDK. It's likely that the site didn't know that they were infected as it is a fairly reputable site when it comes to mobile development. This is reportedly not the first time the site has had issues with malware.

Samsung planning Wi-Fi only Galaxy Camera Many of us have probably heard of the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Camera that comes on Verizon's and AT&T's LTE networks, and numerous others around the world. A subset of us probably thought, "Why does my camera need LTE?" Apparently Samsung was listening, because they have just announced the aptly named Galaxy Camera (Wi-Fi).
samsung_planning_wi_fi_only_galaxy_camera
The new model will be identical to the currently available Galaxy Camera, save for the fact it won't come with an LTE modem. Samsung hasn't spilled all of the details, so we can't tell you when it will be released or how much it will cost, though the tech giant has promised it will come with a smaller price tag.

Survey says 10% of Netflix subscribers have watched House of Cards, average 6 episodes watched It looks like House of Cards has been a success with Netflix, at least according to data from Cowen and Company. According to their survey of 1,200 people, 28 percent were paying Netflix customers with an additional 18 percent having access to a Netflix account. Their data shows that 10 percent of those users have watched at least one episode of House of Cards during its first week.
survey_says_10_of_netflix_subscribers_have_watched_house_of_cards_average_6_episodes_watched
On average, six episodes were watched by a user. Most people--80 percent--responded that the series was "good" or "exceptional." Netflix releasing all 13 episodes at once was also received positively, with 90 percent watching more than one episode per sitting. The data suggests that Arrested Development could be even better for the company, with the largest group of users being aware Netflix is bringing the show back. 19 percent of the 1,200 surveyed were aware of House of Cards. 34 percent were aware of Netflix's original content plans. Here's the good news for Netflix: 86 percent surveyed said they would be less likely to cancel after watching House of Cards. It looks like original programming might just pay off. Have you seen House of Cards? Are you more likely to keep your Netflix subscription because of it? Let us know!

RumorTT: Apple to debut MacBook Air with Retina display in Q3 One of the latest rumors out of the Apple rumor mill is that Apple is planning to release a MacBook Air that is equipped with a Retina display. The rumor says that Apple is planning on releasing this new MacBook Air sometime in the third quarter of this year. Previous rumors have said that the Air would get the Retina treatment in June.
rumortt_apple_to_debut_macbook_air_with_retina_display_in_q3
Of course, if the Air gets a Retina display, it's going to need more horsepower to drive those pixels and a bigger battery to power the display. It's not clear if Apple will be able to pack all of the extras required into the Air's tiny chassis, though Apple has done other engineering marvels before. EMSOne says that the update will be arriving in the coming months, so it may be worth holding off if you were thinking of getting a new MacBook Air.

Apple's iPad mini supply catches up to demand, device now 'In Stock' in most countries It looks like the iPad mini's constrained supply has finally caught up to the high demand. The device is now showing as "In Stock" in most countries around the world, showing that Apple's supply has either increased to meet the high demand, or the high demand has dropped off slightly.
apple_s_ipad_mini_supply_catches_up_to_demand_device_now_in_stock_in_most_countries
In all reality, it's probably the latter option. People are probably seeing the rumors of a new iPhone 5S and are starting to think that an updated iPad mini could also be just around the corner. There have also been rumors of an iPad mini with Retina display coming soon and this could be contributing to a decrease in demand. European customers are still seeing 1-3 days as the quoted shipping time, but those should soon change to "In Stock." If you want to pick up a new iPad mini, now is definitely a good time as you shouldn't have to wait for them to ship out.

Google's stock hits record high of $800 Google's stock continues to perform incredibly well, even while Apple's stock falters. Google's stock increased over 1 percent earlier this morning, topping out at $804.00. This is the first time the stock price has been over $800 and it shows no signs of stopping growing.
google_s_stock_hits_record_high_of_800
The boost has come from renewed investor confidence that Google can continue to increase revenue and profit, even as cost-per-click continues to decline. What's really funny about this whole thing is that Google would actually like the stock price to be lower. They attempted to split the stock last year, but have been unable to due to a lawsuit alleging that a split unfairly gives too much power to co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Canonical announces Ubuntu for tablets, developer preview available Thursday Canonical has shared a busy press day with NVIDIA and HTC to announce that they are bringing a version of Ubuntu to tablets near you. The operating system is very similar to that of the recently announced Ubuntu Phone OS, but is also very similar to the desktop version of Ubuntu.
The new operating system joins the fray of available tablet operating systems. However, Canonical is doing something different with the Ubuntu stack of mobile operating systems: the OS will be the same across all platforms. This means that apps written for Ubuntu Desktop will run fine on tablets and smartphones. It also will allow you to plug in a mouse and keyboard into your tablet and interact with it in a traditional desktop manner with multiple windows and a cursor. Unplug the mouse and you're back to working with the touch controls and interface. Here's the awesome part of the announcement: developer preview code is coming Thursday. That's right, developers will be able to get a copy of the source code on Thursday and install it on the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. I can't wait to put it on my Nexus 7.

ORIGIN worked closely with EK Water Blocks in order to be able to offer a liquid cooled system right at launch. It's important to keep such a large card cool and there is not many better ways than water to do it. The system, named the CRYOGENIC liquid cooling solution, keeps the GPU cool, even when overclocked. "When NVIDIA first showed us TITAN, we were simply blown away by its single GPU performance on even the most demanding games and applications." said Kevin Wasielewski ORIGIN PC CEO and cofounder. "Just wait until you see it running on an ORIGIN PC. With support of our CRYOGENIC Liquid Cooling Solution, Professional Overclocking and up to 4-WAY SLI, TITAN brings us the first true gaming supercomputer."

No word has been given about whether or not the update patches the exploits used by the Evasi0n jailbreak tool, so you probably shouldn't try updating until an official word has been given by the developers. We'll be sure to let you know as soon as we hear something. Another question is whether or not this update fixes the lock screen bug that would allow people to bypass a password lock with a couple of simple steps. An announcement saying that it is fixed is curiously absent from the release notes, though that doesn't mean it hasn't been patched.

HTC One smartphone hardware specs released - this isn't your old HTC phone During this morning's press conference, HTC didn't really touch on the hardware specifications of its new flagship the HTC One, and that lead some of us to believe that it may not pack the punch we were hoping for. The HTC One's webpage just went live and "wow" did they deliver on performance.
The HTC One features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor running at 1.7GHz, 2GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage and built-in NFC capabilities. The display is a 4.7-inch Full HD 1080p, 468 PPI density LCD that is the company's brightest, sharpest and most vibrant display to date.

Other notable features include GPS, Digital Compass, Gyro, Accelerometer, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, DLNA and an IR blaster that lets your phone function as a remote control for all your home theater devices. It also features a completely redesigned camera that is built on HTC's exclusive Ultrapixel technology. The camera is set at f/2.0 with a 28mm lens, is capable of full HD 1080p video capture as well. A front facing 2MP camera with an 88 degree field of view is also placed on the phone.

Finally the whole thing is housed in an aluminum uni-body frame and powered by a 2300 mAh battery that should get you several hours of use on a single charge. We have thoroughly covered the new HTC One today and we want to hear your thoughts on the new flagship smartphone. Do you think HTC hit a home run with the One, or is the company doomed to stay in the shadows of Samsung and Apple? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC One features and specs unveiled, gets all aluminum unibody and new technology camera During this morning's launch event, HTC design lead Jonah Becker, walked us through the new and exciting design specifications of the new HTC One. It appears that HTC has beaten Apple to the punch when it comes to an all-aluminum uni-body smartphone.

Before we get into the body though, let's talk about some exciting new hardware featured in the HTC One. First off, the new flagship phone was given an entirely new design with front facing speakers, which HTC is calling BoomSound. The speakers are said to offer a much more rich and vibrant sound than previously seen on other HTC devices. HTC has also included an IR blaster into the phone for full home media control.
htc_one_features_and_specs_unveiled_gets_all_aluminum_unibody_and_new_technology_camera
Up next is a completely re-imagined camera, that bucks the trend of packing more pixels into a smaller package. "The new HTC One makes the camera experience better", Becker said. "I saw an opportunity to shake things up with the camera experience. It starts with a new approach about camera technology, it's not about megapixel count, but pixel size." he continued. HTC is calling the new exclusive technology "Ultrapixel" and from my understanding, HTC focused on pixel quality, light sensitivity and pixel size, to create a new image sensor that performs better than any smartphone camera previously seen. Becker then introduced the HTC One's new image and video capture software dubbed HTC Zoe, which will be able to simultaneously capture HD video and still images at the same time. Finally Becker introduced us to something that I feel makes the HTC One stand out from the crowd, an all-aluminum uni-body chassis. "The HTC One has a true purity of design, HTC has always been bold," Becker said. The all new aluminum uni-body fully incorporates the antenna into the chassis and through new technology, is able to avoid the issues seen on the iPhone 5's aluminum band. The new body appears to be machined from a single block of aluminum and features what HTC is labeling as "Zero Gap Construction". The event ended with HTC president Jason MacKenzie saying that the HTC One will go on sale in the US in March at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Best Buy, and will be available in black or silver. He did not mention pricing, but we should see some numbers in the coming days.

HTC unveils long anticipated One (formerly M7) smartphone, also introduces new feature 'BlinkFeed' At this morning's launch event, HTC president Jason MacKenzie, said the company has been on an "amazing ride" over the last few years. He said that smartphone users "snack" on information from their phones in 10, 20 and 30 second intervals.
htc_unveils_long_anticipated_one_formerly_m7_smartphone_also_introduces_new_feature_blinkfeed
MacKenzie said that HTC "saw a massive opportunity to bring some excitement back to phones" and that "this isn't a set of incremental improvements I'm talking about a bold step forward for something new and fresh". MacKenzie then introduced the HTC One, the company's latest flagship smartphone. "The HTC One improves every part of the smartphone experience," he said. "It has a complete visual redesign so it looks cleaner and more modern. No matter your age, we all rely on our smartphones, and rely on the constant flow of content".
htc_unveils_long_anticipated_one_formerly_m7_smartphone_also_introduces_new_feature_blinkfeed
He then went into talking about the exclusive new feature that makes the HTC One unique, BlinkFeed. BlinkFeed is a constantly updating stream of info with news, images and updates from friends. BlinkFeed delivers with the biggest brands like AP, MTV and many more. ESPN has teamed up with HTC to tailor their content to fit BlinkFeed perfectly. ESPN President of Global Customer Marketing, Ed Erhardt, took the stage and said, "ESPN tries to serve audience wherever they get it. The relationship we developed with HTC speaks to that. ESPN sees tech as an advancer, not a disrupter, I think we are seeing the tabletization of smartphones here, and where HTC is going next is exactly in line with where ESPN is going". HTC said that BlinkFeed turns the home-screen into an integrated live feed. "When you're in an elevator, waiting in line, or waiting for a friend, it's something you can look at. You can choose the type of content you get."

LG releases video teasing four new smartphones it will release next week at the MWC LG is up to its clever marketing schemes again. In an attempt to build hype about its upcoming smartphones, the company has released a video that gives us a few glimpses of four of its newest smartphones that will be released at next week's Mobile World Congress.
The video above teases us with four new phones, each assigned a letter. The letters each appear to stand for a name or style: L - Style, G - Greatness, V - Vu and F - Freedom. If this is any indication, we should see a good showing from LG next week.
htc_releases_video_teasing_4_new_smartphones_it_will_release_next_week_at_the_mwc
You might have noticed that "Tags" was referenced quite a bit in the video. Our best bet is that LG is vaguely referring to the "Tag On" stickers that were shown off at last month's CES show, and each of the new phones will include some form of NFC. As a smartphone junkie, I am quite excited about the next several days and what we will see unveiled.

Yesterday's Burger King Twitter hack gained the company 30,000 additional followers Most of you will be familiar with Burger King's Twitter account being hacked yesterday, our own Trace Hagan covered it here. While funny and serious at the same time, the hack may have actually helped the company more than it hurt it.

Burger King officials once again have control of the hacked account and it seems that everything is back to normal for the most part, but one major change has taken place, BK's followers are up by more than 30,000 than it had this time yesterday. The account now sits with over 100,000 followers. Upon regaining control of the account the company acknowledged the event by tweeting: "Interesting day here at Burger King, but we're back! Welcome to our new followers. Hope you all stick around!" With an increase in marketable audience this big, I really hope we do not see companies begin to "fake" hacks just to gain larger followings.

NASA says that the Russian meteor last week was the biggest in over 100 years The highly destructive meteorite that blasted into Earth's atmosphere last week, exploding near Chelyabinsk, Russia is quite the event according to NASA. The US space agency have said that it is one of the biggest to strike in over 100 years.
nasa_says_that_the_russian_meteor_last_week_was_the_biggest_in_over_100_years
The actual size of the object was 10,000 tons with the energy released from the event hovering at around 500 kilotons - nearly 30 times the size of the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima. The meteor impact that previously wielded this type of power, was in 1908 in Tunguska, Siberia. The Voice of Russia has reported that over 1200 people have been injured, and 3724 buildings damaged by the impact. On top of this, a combined 200,000 square meters (2.15 million square feet) of shattered glass is the result from the intense shockwave. Damage is pegged at an estimated $33 million. Paul Chodas of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office has stated that "we would expect an event of this magnitude to occur once every 100 years on average." What I don't understand, is that with all of the technology we've got - why we didn't see it coming? Are you telling me that if this asteroid was poised as a direct strike on the White House, that the President and hundreds of people would perish because NASA, or any other space agency for that matter didn't see it coming? I find it hard to believe, but we're now seeing billions more dollars and man hours pumped into preemptive programs for asteroid strikes now.

Security firm releases evidence of alleged military-backed Chinese hacking group at work Security firm Mandiant has come out with quite the startling report titled "APT1: Exposing One of China's Cyber Espionage Units", which has tracked the alleged military-backed Chinese hacking group dubbed as Advanced Persistent Threat 1 all the way back to 2006.
Mandiant have written "Our analysis has led us to conclude that APT1 is likely government-sponsored and one of the most persistent of China's cyber threat actors." The group is also believed to be the 2nd Bureau of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff Department's (GSD) 3rd Department, otherwise known as Unit 61398. The New York Times have written about it, where they worked off an advance copy of the report, which led them to buildings in Shanghai which they believe is where the unit is based. The Times then encountered persistent attacks from Chinese hackers last year, where they worked with Mandiant to monitor and block the intrusions into their network.

US scientists working on way to turn plastic bags into batteries Scientists from the Argonne National Laboratory are working on something truly incredible, where they are converting plastic bags into batteries - yes, you read that right. Vilas Pol, a Chemist with the laboratory was interviewed by Al Jazeera, where he cut a plastic bag and eventually turned it into a battery.
us_scientists_working_on_way_to_turn_plastic_bags_into_batteries
Pol did this by cutting plastic bags into bits, puts the pieces of plastic bag into a metal tube, adds a 'catalyst', and heats it to 700C. In three hours, a fine black-colored powder - carbon. This carbon sells for $150 per gram, making it worth more than gold. Within a few minutes, the carbon can be converted into a watch battery. Scientists are now working on making this technology cheaper. The more energy pushed into the battery, the cheaper the battery can get - which is the main driving force of storing more energy into the battery itself. The US government is set to invest $120 million into the project, to create smaller batteries that would eventually be used in smartphones, right up to electric cars. The technology that is baked into the Chevy Volt, was made at the Argonne National Laboratory. The lab's goal is to see battery life extend from the current 2-5 years to 10-15 years, within the next decade.

Seasonic Platinum 520 Fanless 520-Watt 80 PLUS Platinum Power Supply Review
seasonic_platinum_520_fanless_520_watt_80_plus_platinum_power_supply_review

Introduction

We really do hope that our readers are familiar with Seasonic by now. Over the last 35 years, they have become synonymous for high quality and efficient power supplies. Seasonic not only produces power supplies under their own name, but also acts as an OEM for a very large number of different manufacturers. Chances are that if you've had five or more power supplies throughout the years, one of them was built by Seasonic. On top of all this, we've covered several of their units and they really are top notch. Our last review of a Seasonic unit was the Platinum 1000W and it was superb. It did leave us wanting more though and Seasonic has expanded their Platinum lineup with more units. Not only that, but their sub-600W units are available as fanless units. We have one such unit on the bench today and it is the 520W model. Keep reading as we go over the new Platinum Fanless 520W and see what it has to offer.

Specifications, Availability and Pricing

seasonic_platinum_520_fanless_520_watt_80_plus_platinum_power_supply_review
As you would expect from a lower wattage power supply, 12V power is delivered via a single 12V rail. In the case of the Platinum 520 Fanless, it is a 43A rail capable of 516W of power. Both the 3.3V and 5V rails are rated for 20A each with a combined maximum output of 100W. The 5VSB rail is rated for 2.5A or 12.5W. Maximum combined output for the power supply is 520W.
seasonic_platinum_520_fanless_520_watt_80_plus_platinum_power_supply_review
I'll be the first to admit that I was surprised when we weren't able to fill our feature summary full of green checks since this is a Seasonic unit. It is understandable though, since the power supply is fanless and it isn't intended to be in very hot environments. All protections are present including Over Temperature Protection. All cables for the Platinum 520 Fanless are both modular and fully sleeved. The power supply is 80 PLUS Platinum rated for efficiency and while it is not rated for 100% continuous output at 50C, it is rated for it at 40C. Seasonic has an MSRP of $149.99 on the Platinum 520 Fanless power supply. A quick search will yield a much lower price of $134.56 from Provantage. This may seem like quite a bit for a 520W power supply, but let's not forget that it is fanless... and actually comes in cheaper than the competition by at least $10. Seasonic backs the Platinum 520 Fanless by a seven year warranty. ... Read the rest in your browser!

Building a DIY All-in-One PC with GIGABYTE's H77TN Thin Mini-ITX Motherboard

Introduction

building_a_diy_all_in_one_pc_with_gigabyte_s_h77tn_thin_mini_itx_motherboard
At the beginning what we were going to do with our first DIY AIO PC was a little unknown. GIGABYTE has introduced a new motherboard for the latest PC category in the form of the H77TN - a Thin Mini-ITX motherboard designed for All-in-One systems. With this being new to us we're just kind of going with the flow today. The board itself doesn't have a full package and the manual hasn't even been completed yet by GIGABYTE at the time of writing. The AIO segment is going to become bigger and bigger as time goes on and the DIY aspect of it is going to be interesting as we see some companies offer motherboards for the platform and others offer chassis. Alongside the H77TN motherboard from GIGABYTE, we've also got a MiTAC Maestro 770 chassis. What we're going to do today is have a look at both items, but more so cover the experience on a whole. There seems to be plenty to focus on with the first part of the whole process being the build. It's the first time we've built an AIO PC and with no manual, we're kind of just winging it. With a few years of PC building experience under the belt, though, I should be fine. But what is the process like? There tends to be nothing worse than working in a small system and you really can't get much smaller than an AIO PC. The other big thing we need to cover is the user experience. I've had a play here and there with Windows 8 and continued to find myself disappointed with it. This time around, though, we've got a multi-touch screen. Will I finally get myself a decent Windows 8 experience? We'll do a little bit of benchmarking to give you a bit of an idea of what kind of performance you can expect. Most of the focus in this area, though, will be on the CPU side of things, as we expect little to happen when it comes to the gaming side of things. The first thing we're going to do is take a closer look at the motherboard GIGABYTE has given us. We'll cover some of the main features and some of the components you'll need to get up and running. Once we've done that we'll take a closer look at the MiTAC Maestro 770 chassis. Once we've covered both those items we'll then move onto the build process, and cover how easy or hard it was, and any problems we ran into. You know, all that kind of fun stuff before we finally get around to installing both Windows 7 and Windows 7 on the device. Then we'll cover the touch aspect of the unit, and run a few benchmarks before finally wrapping up our experience. ... Read the rest in your browser!
