CISPA returns, could see President Obama issue an executive order on cybersecurity According to Bloomberg's latest report, the White House could slap down an executive order on cybersecurity sometime next week, just after the State of the Union address.
cispa_returns_could_see_president_obama_issue_an_executive_order_on_cybersecurity
This new order has been slowly building up over the last few months, and arrives in perfect timing to address some of the high-profile attacks that we've seen lately, including the hack on the Federal Reserve. The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times have both been attacked, where they're accusing the hackers are coming from China. We've seen Twitter hacked, too. The new executive order signed by President Obama would set up a bunch of voluntary cybersecurity standards that companies operating important US infrastructure will be able to participate in. This will push for a more open government, which would share information about potential threats to companies in the private sector.

Google reportedly paying Apple $1 billion a year to be the default search engine on iOS Over the years, Google has forged their way into the english language, thanks to people saying "Google it" when asked a question. Well, it helps that iOS' default search engine is Google, but just how much does Google pay for this privilege?
google_reportedly_paying_apple_1_billion_a_year_to_be_the_default_search_engine_on_ios
Well, it looks like it could be as much as $1 billion per year. Scott Devitt from Morgan Stanley in a recent note to investors said "the next Google is Google", believing that the search giant's business has much more room to grow in expanding markets and subsidiaries such as YouTube could see as much as $20 billion generated by 2020. Devitt estimated during the note that the Mountain View-based company could be paying Apple up to $1 billion per year to be their default search engine, with that figure set to expand over the coming years. Previous reports pegged the companies to be in a revenue sharing deal, but Devitt doesn't think this makes sense. He says that Apple would instead be much better off to do a fee per device agreement for the benefits of upfront payments and easier accounting.

For instance, several of Sony's gaming partners are starting to schedule press conferences shortly after the expected release of the PlayStation 4. This indicates that we could see launch titles from the developers behind LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, and Killzone. On Media Molecule's website, a new "?" page has popped up. Killzone 2 launched alongside of the PS3 in 2005 and now Video Gamer is claiming that Killzone 4 will launch alongside the PS4. MotorStorm RC's director Paul Rustchnsky is counting down the days to Sony's event on Twitter. Other titles are sure to debut next to the PlayStation 4. What would you like to see day one?

Alicia Keys' Twitter account tweets from an iPhone, Keys says she was hacked As we thought might happen, Alicia Keys, BlackBerry's new Global Creative Director, has seemingly tweeted from an iPhone. She had previously stated that she was strictly exclusive to BlackBerry now that she is apparently on their payroll. She isn't the first, nor will she be the last, to accidentally tweet from a competitor's product.

The tweet has since been deleted and Keys has subsequently said that she was hacked. "What the h*ll?!!!! Looks like I've been hacked... I like @Drake but that wasn't my tweet :-(" reads the tweet. What do you think? Did she accidentally tweet from her iPhone or was she legitimately hacked?

Windows Live Mesh closes down Wednesday, better hurry up and switch Just a friendly reminder, Windows Live Mesh will be shutting down on Wednesday. Current users will be left in the dark, so you should start changing over to a new service. Of course, Microsoft would like you to switch over to SkyDrive, but there are other options out there if you aren't keen on going with Microsoft.

Nokia is the top Windows Phone manufacturer, usage data says they have 75% of the market Numbers from AdDuplex show that Nokia has roughly 75 percent of the Windows Phone market. AdDuplex's numbers are usage numbers from the company's ad network. While the numbers only come from 294 applications, which creates a fairly small and unreliable sample size, general questions, such as the top manufacturer, can be asked fairly reliably.

As you can see, Nokia holds just over 75 percent of the Windows Phone market. HTC comes in second with just over 10 percent. From there, the numbers drop off pretty significantly. It's no surprise that Nokia is leading the market; it's Lumia line of devices are solid and Nokia has worked closely with Microsoft. We're always on the lookout for data and trends. We'll keep looking to see if we can come up with some interesting trends in the Windows Phone market.

Twitter increased price of Promoted Treds, will set you back $200k per day If you're looking to advertise on Twitter with a Promoted Trends tweet, it's going to cost you a bit more than it used to. Twitter has raised the price of the Promoted Trend advertising option to $200,000 per day. This is up 33 percent from its previous price of $150,000 and up 150 percent from the $80,000 price it launched at in 2010.

Clearly, Twitter is having no issue selling these spots as the price has continually increased from the start of the service. Doing a bit of math, we arrive at the fact that Twitter could bring in $73 million a year if they sell one advertising slot each day, which might not be that hard to do. This is ahead of rumors that Twitter could be planning to go public next year. Estimates place the company at being worth $11 billion in a year.

Microsoft Surface Pro ad shows the device being used to beatbox in a corporate environment It what might be called one of the most ridiculous ads ever, Microsoft advertises the Surface Pro tablet with beatboxing in a corporate environment. Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself:
What they're obviously trying to get at is that it is a cool device that can be used in the workplace. I'm just not sure that this advertisement gets that message across as clearly as they could have. The ad is also very similar to the first Surface ad that depicted the Surface RT and how easy it was to attach a keyboard. That advertisement hasn't worked very well--seemingly, anyway--so it's not clear why they'd attempt the same type of ad again. Enough of my thoughts on the ad. What do you think of it? Have a strange urge to go out and buy one now? Let us know in the comments!

Most of Europe will get access to the new native YouTube app, along with Australia, New Zealand, and others. Considering YouTube is already native on the competing consoles, it's a wonder that it took so long to get it onto the PS3. The PS3 is the most used device in the living room for streaming Netflix, so you'd think Google would have wanted in on that. The complete list of countries: Australia, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Russia and the United Kingdom.

ReportTT: iOS 6.1.1 being rushed out by Apple to fix 3G issues, other bugs A German blog is reporting that Apple is rushing out the iOS 6.1.1 update to address issues with 3G connectivity and other bugs. iOS 6.1 has seemingly come with its fair share of issues, including a 3G data issue that has prompted carriers in Europe to suggest users not upgrade until it is fixed.
reporttt_ios_6_1_1_being_rushed_out_by_apple_to_fix_3g_issues_other_bugs
Other issues include people reporting a decrease in battery life. A beta version of iOS 6.1.1 has already been pushed out to carriers and developers to test and it looks like Apple is working diligently to push out this 23MB update in a final version. The reason for this is that major companies are encouraging users not to upgrade and this makes Apple look bad. Yahoo has had to disable the ability to manage meetings in iOS due to a possible Exchange bug present in iOS 6.1. It's also possible that Apple will push out a fix to the vulnerabilities used by the Evasi0n jailbreak tool, though they could be so focused on fixing bugs that they don't find time to patch the vulnerability. When Apple pushes out iOS 6.1.1, it's recommended not to upgrade if you have a jailbroken device until the developers confirm it won't break the jailbreak.

As such, the price might not be the same in the United States, but it should give us a starting point. Furthermore, some of the specifications were listed in the title bar. The card listed is an ASUS that features a PCI-E 3.0 interface, 6GB of RAM, and a 512-bit RAM interface. Previous rumors had placed the RAM at 6GB on a 384-bit memory bus. Clocks are said to be 915MHz with a boost to 1019. There isn't a picture of the product, so take this with some reservations. This posting could be wrong.

UK satellite TV service Freesat to get new YouTube app Google has reportedly signed a deal with the free-to-air UK satellite service Freesat that will bring a dedicated YouTube app to the service. It is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV that offers users more than 60 channels at no cost to its users.

Freesat has said that the app will be built using HTML5 and will "optimize" the videos for TV viewing, offering a "visually stunning" experience. This is a good thing because anyone who has ever watched YouTube videos on their large HDTV will be able to relate to the poor quality on larger screens. Freesat has a reported three million+ in sales of its set top boxes, and gains a great deal of free content through this deal. Google will be the major benefactor here, as the addition to the service will most certainly see an increase in UK based viewers, giving it more people to display targeted ads to.

Mega sees more invalid DMCA take-down notices, this time Warner Bros. is the culprit The hits keep coming for Kim Dotcom's brain child, Mega. Fortunately most of them never make contact with the file locker giant. Warner Bros. was caught red-handed sending phony DMCA take-down request to Google over files said to be hosted on Mega.
mega_sees_more_invalid_dmca_take_down_notices_this_time_warner_bros_is_the_culprit
There are two problems with the notices, though. First, Google does not index links to files hosted on Mega, and second, the URL's that were listed, were invalid in the first place. The request listed over 900 links to illegal digital copies of its movie Gangster, Squad, with 16 of them pointing to Mega. Warner Bros. uses an automated tool that searches indexes looking for pirated titles; the problem is that the software has switched around some of the URL information. Since its launch, Mega has seen more than its fair share of false DMCA claims, which it has for the most part dodged without consequence.

Intel DC S3700 800GB Enterprise SSD Review

Introduction

intel_dc_s3700_800gb_enterprise_ssd_review
Intel has introduced the Intel DC S3700 SSD (DC denotes 'data center' and S 'SATA) into the enterprise with the intentions of revolutionizing the way that end-users evaluate storage performance. With a new proprietary controller at the helm and optimized firmware, Intel has promised to deliver an unrivaled level of performance consistency. The focus on the latency of the SSD, and not maximum speed, promises to provide more predictable and reliable performance over the long term. Performance variability can rob applications of performance. Individual 'hangs' and lags from outlying I/O can significantly affect application performance simply because applications are forced into waiting for the next I/O to complete. High-end enterprise storage solutions have a reputation for delivering predictable performance, and Intel looks to extend this to the world of enterprise SSDs. Intel has set forth in their specifications that a QD32 4K random write workload will result in 99.9% of write requests requiring less than 10ms. For a QD1 4k random write workload, Intel also claims that 99.9999% percent of commands will be at, or under, 0.5ms. While the QD1 statistic is not relevant in many enterprise applications, it speaks volumes to the emphasis that Intel placed on ensuring the most efficient data delivery. Intel also notes that IOPS will not vary by more than 10-15% during the life of the SSD. Intel sacrifices some of the overall speed in order to deliver this consistency, yet still manages to double the read speed and deliver a 15x random write performance increase over the previous generation Intel 710. The 710 also featured the same 25nm HET (High-Endurance Technology) NAND as the DC S3700, so the enhancements in speed and consistency are provided by the new controller and firmware. This lack of significant performance variability makes this SSD uniquely well suited for RAID arrays, where the RAID controller is constrained to the speed of the slowest I/O. HET-MLC is a key component in the architecture, delivering 10 DWPD (Drive Writes per Day) of endurance for five years. This doubling of endurance from the previous generation SSD equates to 14.6 Petabytes of endurance for the 800GB model and 7.3PB at the 400GB capacity point. This endurance is backed up by a five year warranty.
intel_dc_s3700_800gb_enterprise_ssd_review
Dynamically adjusting the NAND over the course of its life and enhanced NAND management techniques help to reduce the wear on the SSD. The DC S3700's endurance rating of 10 DWPD is for worst-case scenarios that consist of full span random writes. In applications with only pseudo-random or sequential data writes, this number can be much higher. The increase in endurance is a critical improvement that will help low-cost SSDs gain wider acceptance among the enterprise crowd. Prohibitive pricing of SSDs in the past has hampered their mass deployment into datacenters. With each successive SSD generation we have experienced cost reductions, and part of Intel's goal with the DC S3700 to bring the price of datacenter SSDs down to an acceptable price point. As a byproduct, SSDs are getting closer to a level playing field with high-performance HDDs. The winning recipe for price reduction comes in the form of the IMFT (Intel/Micron Flash Technologies) joint venture with Micron. Leveraging the lower price points that come with physically creating the NAND allows Intel to undercut competitors that lack foundries on the price front. Intel took a similar path with the Intel 910, which helped to drastically alter the price structure of PCIe application accelerators. The MSRP of the Intel DC S3700 SSDs is a mere $2.35 per GB. This is going to put a squeeze on margins for competitors and spur wider adoption of SSDs into the enterprise. ... Read the rest in your browser!

GX Gaming Gila MMO/RTS Professional Gaming Mouse Review

Introduction

gx_gaming_gila_mmo_rts_professional_gaming_mouse_review
Not too long ago I took my first look at a GX Gaming product with the Death Taker MMO/RTS mouse. That mouse offered quite a bit in its feature set like nine buttons, add in weights, 5700 DPI, customizable colors, and a software package that would allow you to set many Macros and customize almost every aspect of the mouse's functionality. I think the idea with the newest release was to improve on this concept and while loosely based off the Death Taker and what it offered, this new mouse has a shape and design all its own. As I just reread my Death Taker conclusion, there were no issues that I remember from either the device or the software. In reality, the only thing I could complain about was that it was a bit small for my hand. I know all mice aren't made to fit my hand exclusively, so really that issue may not affect some of my readers. This time I plan to be as objective with this new release from GX Gaming as well. If their past is any insight to what I should expect from this latest sample that hit my desktop, I think that there shouldn't be anything major to discuss as faults, but who knows, maybe things have changed since then. I don't want to give too much away this early in the review of the GX Gaming Gila MMO/RTS Professional Gaming mouse that we are about to delve deeper into on the next page, but things have improved in the feature set. There is an increase in the button count, almost an ambidextrous design, much more aggressive styling, lights to play with and customize, and the list keeps going. If this short list of improvements doesn't already have you wanting to continue, I strongly urge you do so anyways, as this new mouse may be just what you are looking for. ... Certified through the Windows 8 Hardware certification kit, Super Talent's RC4 is one of the world's top USB 3.0 drives with SSD technology; it provides high random read/write speed capabilities and reports itself as fixed media. Super Talent's RC4 meets and surpasses many of the performance requirements of Windows To Go certified drives. "We are pleased to announce SuperTalent's second Windows To Go certified drive, the RC4. We are committed to providing our customers with a rich, consistent, and personalized Windows 8 experience even when they run Windows 8 from a USB drive. Super Talent continues to offer drives specifically optimized for Windows To Go to help us fulfill this vision" - Stella Chernyak; Senior Enterprise, Microsoft.

The integration of SSD technology enables the RC4 to deliver exceptional real world performance with outstanding reliability. Using the SSD firmware, the RC4 is over-provisioned at an enterprise level of 10 percent. This change significantly elevates the drive's performance and increases the product's longevity and reliability. The RC4 includes four channels of NAND flash with a high performance, low power consuming-JMicron SSD/bridge controller. Above this, it is the enterprise level provisioning that allows for incredible 4K random sequential read/write scores-making the RC4 ideal for loading applications. With STT's drive it is just as quick and easy to run a program on the RC4 as it would be to run it on your own SSD. "We are pleased to announce the certification of our second USB 3.0 drive with Windows To Go. Microsoft Corp. is a valued partner of SuperTalent Technology. Our R&D team has been devoted to a successful launch for both partners." - Abraham Ma, CEO, Super Talent Technology For more information please visit our website http://www.supertalent.com/WTG/ to learn more about Windows To Go and the RC4, or email us (at) WTG.sales@supertalent.com.
