Google launches Dart as a JavaScript killer
Google has launched a preview version of a new Web programming language, called Dart, which the company's engineers hope will address some of the shortcomings of the widely used JavaScript language. Google's goals for Dart are to create "a structured yet flexible language for Web programming," wrote Lars Bak, who is a software engineer for Google's Dart team, in a blog post officially announcing the language Monday.

Stratosphere to ship a day before iPhone 4S
The Galaxy S Stratosphere smartphone goes on sale Thursday as the first device with a physical Qwerty keyboard to run on Verizon's Wireless 4G LTE network. The Samsung Galaxy S-class device runs Android 2.3 and will sell for $149.99 after rebate and a two-year agreement with Verizon, both companies announced. A minimum $40 monthly voice plan plus a $30 monthly 2GB data plan are also required.

Acer's S3 ultrabook cracks $1,000 barrier
Acer on Monday shipped its Aspire S3 ultrabook starting at $899, becoming the first to crack the $1,000 price barrier in Intel's new category of thin and light laptops. The S3 has a 13.3-inch screen, is 0.51 inches (1.30 centimeters) thick and weighs 2.98 pounds (1.35 kilograms). It has an Intel Core i5 processor, a 20GB solid-state drive and a 320GB hard drive.

T-Mobile USA unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to U.S. buyers on Monday, just days ahead of a court hearing at which Apple will seek a preliminary injunction to prevent sales of the device in the U.S. T-Mobile didn't say how much the tablet will cost, nor when it will go on sale, but did say the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and another tablet, the 7-inch T-Mobile Springboard with Google, will be available "in time for the holidays" at T-Mobile retail stores and through its web store.

Fire at NYSE data center causes temporary disruption
An electrical fire on Sunday at a data center of the New York Stock Exchange in Mahwah, New Jersey, affected communications connectivity to 58 trading firms, but the exchange expects "completely normal operations" for Monday's market open. The electrical fire was in a single computer cabinet at the Mahwah data center, and was quickly extinguished, said Ray Pellecchia, a spokesman for NYSE Euronext, which owns the exchange.
