The Windows 8 development team updated its blog today to explain how the company has optimized the way Windows 8 uses memory.
As Windows executes applications and performs its own system housekeeping, program files and data are loaded off the disk into main memory. During Windows 7 and Windows 8 development to date, we've analyzed the pieces (pages) of memory during normal execution and how often they were referenced. The idea here is that if you're going to pay the price for allocating a piece of memory, you'd better be using it (referencing it) often. If you're not referencing that memory often but need it, consolidate it with something else.

The Wall Street Journal says that the government has obtained a controversial type of secret court order forcing Google to turn over information from the email accounts of a WikiLeaks volunteer.
The court clashes in the WikiLeaks case provide a rare public window into the growing debate over a federal law that lets the government secretly obtain information from people\'s email and cellphones without a search warrant. Several court decisions have questioned whether the law, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, violates the U.S. Constitution\'s Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Qwikster is Dead, DVDs Staying at Netflix
Netflix has scrapped the Qwikster idea and will keep DVDs and digital downloads on the same site. I would credit Hastings with making a smart move but, the truth be told, all he did was bow to public pressure (again).
It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs. This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

Bing Survey Shows People Favor DIY This Halloween
It's looking like a do-it-yourself (DIY) kind of Halloween this year, based on findings from a recent Bing-commissioned survey of Americans. According to the survey, nearly 40 percent of respondents indicated they are abandoning store-bought outfits for a DIY costume, with 43 percent of survey respondents believing that purchasing a Halloween costume you'll wear for one night is too expensive (nearly a fourfold increase over last year's 12 percent). In fact, many people are ditching intricate costumes and embracing more "everyman" costumes this year, with Kate Middleton topping the list of celebrity costume picks for women at 47 percent and Edward Cullen topping the list for men at 35 percent. Although designing a costume yourself certainly may have its allure, it can also be an overwhelming task without the right tools to help you conceive of and create the masterpiece.

TDK Fires Up Lasers to Double Hard Drive Capacity
TDK has developed a procedure to double disk drive capacity by adding a laser heater through a process called heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). No word yet on when this may be available or what the cost of a HAMR HDD would be.
Current perpendicular magnetic recording technology will hit a brick wall in a generation or two: as the size of each stored bit shrinks, the disk capacity increases, but the platters lose their ability to hold the magnetic direction for each bit in a stable manner

Apple Has 1,000 Engineers Working On Chips

Apple devotes 5% of its total workforce worldwide to develop smaller and more powerful chips.

Microsoft Skype Buy Approved by EU
Another major hurdle has been cleared in the acquisition of Skype by Microsoft. The European Union gave their blessing on Friday for the deal to be completed while the Federal Trade Commission cleared the merger back in June. Several smaller issued have to be cleared prior to the closing of the $8.5 Billion deal.

Springer Media to Digitize 65K Tech Books from 1840 to 2005
Springer Science and Business Media is undertaking a project that will digitalize the company's entire catalogue of books going back to 1840, including the writings of the like of Albert Einstein, Rudolph Diesel, at al. When completed sometime toward the end of next year, the library will consist of 65K new digital offerings.
The "Springer Book Archive" of historical books will be available on the company's Springerlink site, where its contemporary digital offerings currently reside, and will bring the total number of e-titles up to 100,000.
