Samsung, Motorola Android tablets get Skype video
Skype has released version 2.5 of its application for Android, which allows Android-based tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom to use its video calling feature, it said in a blog post on Wednesday. The two tablets are among 14 Android-based devices that now can make video calls; other additions include Motorola Droid 3, LG Optimus Black and Acer Iconia. This brings the total number of video-compatible devices to 41, according to Skype.

Cisco to launch free iPad/iPhone video app
Cisco announced improvements to its video product line Thursday to make it easier for businesses to capture and share video, including a free app coming soon for iPad and iPhone. The free app will make Cisco's existing Show and Share software available for iPad and iPhone in late October through the Apple App Store, Cisco officials said via a Webcast this week.

Nokia lays off 3,500 employees
Nokia is planning to lay off an additional 3,500 employees, as the company continues to restructure after announcing its decision to focus on Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. The affected employees work in manufacturing, location and commerce, and supporting functions, Nokia said on Thursday.

Russian security company adds BlackBerry password cracker
A Russian security company has upgraded a phone-password cracking suite with the ability to figure out the master device password for Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices. Elcomsoft said on Thursday that before it developed the product, it was believed that there was no way to figure out a device password on a BlackBerry smartphone. BlackBerry smartphones are configured to wipe all data on the phone if a password is typed incorrectly 10 times in a row, the company said.

Motorola begins Xoom LTE upgrades Thursday
Motorola Xoom users on Thursday will finally get a promised free hardware upgrade so they can use Verizon's 4G LTE network. When Motorola introduced the tablet in January it said users would be able to upgrade to the faster network, and shortly after it said the upgrades would happen in the second quarter. Motorola has since admitted that it has struggled to develop equipment for LTE networks.

QLogic unveils upgrades to converged network products
In an effort to address the industry trend of consolidating data center networks, QLogic today unveiled a network adapter and switch that allow users to send 16Gbps Fibre Channel and 10GbE traffic over the same wire, while offloading protocol traffic from servers. Craig Alesso, director product marketing at QLogic, said most of the new offerings are slated to ship in 2012. One, a new intelligent Storage Router, will ship in about 18 months, according to Alesso.

SPEC tool to improve server-efficiency ratings
SPEC, the standards body for performance benchmarks, has developed a tool-kit to help more accurately measure the energy efficiency of servers. The Server Efficiency Rating Tool, released in beta on Thursday, will be used for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star for Servers program, which is supposed to help companies identify the most efficient servers when making purchase decisions.
