Skype toolbar causing headaches for Firefox users
Skype and Firefox haven't really been on the same page lately. The Skype toolbar that was developed for Mozilla's popular browser has been causing a ton of problems for users with a reported 40,000 browser crashes in the last week alone. This has caused Mozilla to put a blok on the Skype toolbar while they figure out what the problem is.
The toolbar mostly allows easier Skype usage by identifying phone numbers on web pages and pushing them straight to Skype for easier call making. This is being referred to as a "soft block," which means Firefox is disabling the toolbar by default unless you go it and turn it back on; putting you at risk of the headaches a ton of other users are having. Just one more reason to avoid toolbars altogether.

Facebook IPO could hit the market next year
Facebook's worth a ton of loot; we all know that. The latest reports estimate Zuckerberg's empire at around $50 billion. The new piece of news that was unleashed today is that Facebook has a timeline for going public: April 2012.
While the idea of owning Facebook stock sounds a little odd when you first think about it, the company is big business and is expecting to pass 500 shareholders at some time this year, which will require the company to start filing public financial reports. This will most likely result in a Facebook IPO hitting, which makes sense for the company if it continues growing at this staggering rate. Imagine; hitting the Like button to keep your investments profitable!

Smartphones still in the minority among U.S. cellphone users
Look around you; it seems like almost everyone you know is sporting a smartphone these days, doesn't it? I know I love mine. This isn't quite as true as it looks, according to research done by CTIA and Comscore. While in the U.S. the iPhone and Android are running neck and neck in users among the big four carriers, the percentage of total phones being used is still fairly small.
Another thing to take away from the graph is that only iPhone and Android devices are separated from the pack, which leaves Blackberry users in the big blue percentage as well. While Verizon has nearly half of Android's userbase among the big four, it will be interesting to see what the iPhone does to those numbers once it hits Verizon's network. Also, how many iPhone lovers will jump ship to Verizon for pure network purposes? We'll have to wait and see.

Toshiba's new tablet gets Flashy new site; takes a crack at Apple in the process
Yes, Toshiba is a huge fan of their recently announced 10.1" tablet, although they've skipped a few important things like naming it. That hasn't stopped Toshiba from releasing a site with an extended Flash teaser of the device, and this site has a few choice words for Apple users.
It has been found that if you check out the site on an iOS device, you are greeted with the following message: "Such a shame... if you had a Toshiba Tablet you would enjoy the entire internet. Yep, Flash sites too." Oh snap! The upcoming tablet, which will be running Android 3.0 and have a Tegra 2 processor under the hood, looks like it will be a real powerhouse when it is released this Spring.

Beyond Black Mesa - a short independent film based in the Half Life universe
Beyond Black Mesa is a short indie fan film based in the Half Life universe. It's quite action packed and centers around a few resistance fighters struggling to get out a warning about the impending invasion.
The short film had 2 years in the making and was done for $1200, the results are absolutely incredible. I was wishing for more. Even Valve "favorited" the film on YouTube - check it out, it's well worth the bandwidth!

Asetek and Antec team for Kuhler H2O 620 CPU cooler
When it comes to self-contained and no maintenance liquid cooling system Asetek is one of the biggest names out there. Anyone that has installed or messed with a custom liquid cooling system know that it can be a pain to get all the hoses into the chassis to the point that they are not crimped and you have to keep an eye on the system for leaks and to keep coolant inside the reservoir. You don't have to do any of that with the Asetek line of coolers. The trade off is they don't cool as well as the larger and more complex custom systems.
Asetek and Antec have teamed up to bring a new no maintenance liquid cooling system for the CPU to market. The system is called the Kuhler H2O 620, uses a low profile pump, and preserves airflow inside your chassis. The system is pre-connected with tubes that bend easily to prevent kinks.
The cooling plate is made from copper and the fans the system use have Antec Quiet Computing technology and come on depending on the temperature of the liquid inside the cooler. The goal is to keep the CPU up to 20% cooler than an air-cooled machine and still keep the noise under control. The 620 will ship at the end of the month and will sell for $69.95.

MacPhun will give the 10 billionth app downloader more loot, with a catch
Unless you live under a rock, you have heard that the Apple App Store is set to hit its 10 billionth download soon. The person who ends up downloading the 10 billionth app will get a seriously nice gift. That gift will be a $10,000 gift card that will keep the user in music and apps for a long time.
The MacPhun company has announced that it will give the person who downloads the 10 billionth app an extra $5,000 iTunes gift card if the 10 billionth app is its own FX Photo Studio. That's a blatant attempt to get folks to download its apps for sure and I would say the chance of that app being the big 10B is scant.
MacPhun did say that it would give the 10 billionth downloader a $1,000 gift card if the app is anything from the photo category. I wonder how long it will be before the magic download is made.

NVIDIA manager hints Tegra 3 might surface at MWC next month
This rumor is very lean on anything resembling hard facts, but it bears repeating considering the source of the rumor was NVIDIA's own Tegra manager. It's been a bit more than a year now since NVIDIA outted Tegra 2 at CES 2010.
NVIDIA's GM for Tegra has stated that he plans to stick to a yearly refresh schedule. The manager has said in an interview, "I'm going to come pretty close to my cadence of a launch every year. It will be in production around the same time as my competitors' first dual-cores will."
That's certainly not a hard admission by NVIDIA that Tegra 3 will land at MWC, but considering CES came and went with no mention and Rayfield stating he wants to keep to a yearly update, a Tegra 3 debut in February sounds possible. Rumors claim that Tegra 3 will be a quad-core processor using the Cortex A9 architecture and mated to a GeForce 8 or 9 GPU. That will make for some impressive performance if accurate.

Razer Onza Xbox 360 controllers hit pre-order
Razer has been one of the biggest names in mice and keyboards for PC gamers for a long time. I would bet that most gamers are aware of the brand and a bunch of you might be using Razer mice and keyboards right now. At CES 2011 earlier this month Razer unveiled its first Xbox 360 controller and the thing was really cool.
The controller is called the Onza and it comes in tournament and normal versions. The difference is that the tournament version has a rubberized non-slip covering, backlit buttons, and more adjustability for controls than the standard version. Both of the controllers share the same major features.
They both have two programmable buttons, a precision D-pad, hyperesonse buttons and enhanced ergonomics. The standard controller has a textured surface for better grip and both have a 15-foot long braided cable. The standard Onza is on pre-order for $39.99. The tournament edition is $49.99 and pre-orders on it are sold out right now.

RumorTT: Could serial keys be coming for the PS3?
Cue all the DRM haters: there's a nasty little rumor floating around that Sony is considering implementing serial keys and requiring activation of games and Blu-ray movies. While it's all speculation at this point, it's quite a blow for those of us that like to trade games with friends or even sell used copies.
The recent unveiling of a root-key hack that completely shuts down PS3 security measures could be the reasoning behind Sony considering such actions on future releases. According to a "very reliable source" at the Dutch site PS3-Sense, the new serial key process would pair software with specific Playstation 3 consoles and authenticate them with Sony's servers. Games and such would be able to be activated on up to five different machines before becoming useless. This would not only put a huge dent in the resale of used games, but could also make having an offline PS3 almost impossible. Here's hoping the rumor mill churns this one into a deep hole where it belongs.

HD5770 and HD5750 get rebranded for OEM implementation
Look out everyone, the rebranding fairy is at it again. The HD5750 and HD5770 are being magically poofed by AMD into the HD6770 and HD6750 and being aimed at the OEM market for prebuilt computer integration.
The Juniper based cards will mostly keep their familiar 5 series specs: 128-bit memory interface, 720/800 stream processors, and 1GB GDDR5 memory onboard. OpenGL 4.1 support as well as HDMI 1.4a connectivity have been added to the "new" cards. Keep an eye out for them in Dell and HP machines soon.

Jawbone ERA includes accelerometer to make buttons unnecessary
The Jawbone line of Bluetooth headsets have long been known both for their high end features as well as high end prices. The new Jawbone ERA continues both trends by adding a few new features including an accelerometer as well as Motion-X technology and multi-processor architecture.
The ERA makes use of the accelerometer with the "TapTap" function, which allows you to tap the headset twice to answer or end a call, as well as the "ShakeShake" function that lets you shake the headset four times for automatic pairing mode. This pretty much does away with any need for buttons on the Jawbone ERA, which is fine by me as long as it's built to last. Updates to features like Noise Assassin technology along with "HD Audio" for improved call volume and clarity are also included. All of this for a hefty $129.99 price tag.

Larry Page to take CEO role for Google, Eric Schmidt will remain as Executive Chairman
Google had their quarterly earnings release today and along with it they've announced their top-level management structure, with co-founder Larry Page replacing Eric Schmidt as CEO as of April 4th.
Page will handle the day-to-day operations while Schmidt will become Executive Chairman and focus on business deals, partnerships and outreach. Co-founder Sergey Brin will use his power for new and strategic product efforts.
- Starting from April 4, Larry Page, Google Co-Founder, will take charge of Google's day-to-day operations as Chief Executive Officer.
- Sergey Brin, Google Co-Founder, will devote his energy to strategic projects, in particular working on new products.
- Eric Schmidt will assume the role of Executive Chairman, focusing externally on deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership--all of which are increasingly important given Google's global reach. Internally, he will continue to act as an advisor to Larry and Sergey.
Commenting on these changes, Eric said: "We've been talking about how best to simplify our management structure and speed up decision making for a long time. By clarifying our individual roles we'll create clearer responsibility and accountability at the top of the company. In my clear opinion, Larry is ready to lead and I'm excited about working with both him and Sergey for a long time to come."

Concept tablet with integrated projector demoed by MSI
Tablets have been all the rage lately, and it's becoming more and more difficult to stand out from the crowd. MSI may have managed to do just that with their 10", Atom powered Windows 7 slate that includes an extra treat: a built in projector.
Obviously pointed towards the business sector to avoid having to drag around laptops and projectors and spend a ton of time with setup, this tablet would streamline the whole process and the swiveling projector would allow you to use it nearly anywhere. There's no specific details on the projector like lumens or resolution, but an MSI rep also hinted at the ability to use a laser projected keyboard with this projector as well. This would definitely save a lot of time and hauling for those who do a lot of presentations.

Apple change iPhone screws to stop DIY repairs or mods
Apple are at it again stopping DIYers and modders from messing with their handsets. According to iFixit, Apple has started using propietary tamper-resistant "Pentalobe" screws that resemble familiar Torx screws except they have five rounded points instead of Torx's six.
"This screw head is new to us. In fact, there isn't a single reputable supplier that sells exactly the same screwdrivers Apple's technicians use -- which is Apple's point. They picked an obscure head that no one would have," iFixit said. "Apple chose this fastener specifically because it was new, guaranteeing repair tools would be both rare and expensive."
Apple reportedly started using Pentalobe screws to secure the mid-2009 MacBook Pro's battery and they're also used on the lower case of the latest MacBook Air models to prevent users from accessing the system's internals.
Most non-US iPhone 4's shipped Pentalobe screws from day one and the new US versions now use the Pentalobe screws. iFixit also notes that any service done to your iPhone by Apple will include the removal of the Phillips screws and the installation of the Pentalobe screws is done.
iFixit however sell an "iPhone 4 Liberation Kit" with everything you'll need to get inside.

HIS Radeon HD 6970 2GB Video Card Overclocked
Introduction
We've just had a look at the HIS HD 6970 Turbo and I then realized that we hadn't even had a look at the reference HD 6970 2GB from HIS. It's not that we had forgotten about it, but we wanted to give the card the same treatment as the GIGABYTE HD 6950 2GB we have just looked at.
Since we had looked at the HD 6970 by itself as well as in Crossfire, the next thing to do was see what happens when we overclock them. With the holidays it seemed that MSI were a little slower than normal when it came to updating Afterburner with voltage support, so unfortunately we're looking at the HIS HD 6970 in this regard a little later than we would normally.
The HIS HD 6970 2GB is in our test system now, though; Afterburner is fired up and we've pumped the voltage up and began to overclock. Because we haven't looked at the card, though, we'll quickly look at the package HIS has put together here before taking a closer look at the card. We'll then get into the fun stuff - Overclocking!
The Package
Inside there's nothing that you wouldn't have seen before with the package being fairly standard and following the same setup as we saw in the Turbo package. Of course, the main difference is the lack of Turbo labeling.

Galaxis ARES Mid Tower Chassis
Introduction
A few weeks ago I received a random e-mail from a company I haven't heard from before, but I am always eager to look at what new companies can bring to the market. I was informed of this company named Coonix who has been, for a while now, building OEM components for well known manufacturers. They are based out of City of Industry, California. After a fair bit of time with the OEM business, Coonix developed their own branding. So let me cordially introduce them to the US market.
Galaxis plans to be a leading name in power supplies as well as many other facets of the PC building experience. The name Galaxis isn't all together new, as they already have parts on six continents and the company boasts employment of over 2000 people currently. With aspirations to bring customers affordable, quality products full of innovation and creativity, at least they are on the right path to success. They are more known for their power supplies, but they are now taking steps to bring us some new chassis designs to ponder on our next purchase.
With the mid tower segment of chassis' already inundated with a ton, literally, of choices, if you plan to jump in with both feet you need to bring something good. Either you need to bring a chassis chocked full of features like a CM 690II, or just offer absolutely rock bottom pricing. I say we just take a look at what Galaxis has to introduce and give the ARES ARE-001BL mid tower chassis a good going over.

With its hand-detection sensor, the Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 is active only when you're gripping it - the mouse is only active when you want it to be, and it stays asleep when you don't. A sealed bottom - so fabric fuzz won't collect in the sensor opening - gives you cursor control no matter what surface you're using your mouse on. And the easy-gliding base makes mousing around on couches (and blankets, cushions, clothing, carpets, even desks) easy.
Also featuring effortless Logitech Hyper-Fast Scrolling, the M515 mouse lets you coast smoothly through long blogs or social networking feeds. And you can switch to click-to-click mode when you need more control.
Logitech's newest mouse also offers up to two years of battery life, helping you save time and money by eliminating the need to change batteries frequently. And, you'll enjoy plug-and-forget wireless connectivity thanks to the tiny Logitech Unifying receiver. The receiver stays in your laptop so it's less likely to be lost, and gives you a reliable connection with virtually no delays or dropouts. Plus, you can easily add other Unifying-compatible mice and keyboards to the same receiver.
Pricing and Availability
The Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 is expected to be available in Europe beginning in April for a suggested retail price of £49.99.

AVADirect Introduces Desktops and Notebooks Featuring Intel's Sandy Bridge Processors
AVADirect Introduces Desktops and Notebooks Featuring Intel's Sandy Bridge Processors
Twinsburg, OH - January 20th
AVADirect, a leading custom computer manufacturer, announces newly added desktops and notebooks featuring the new Sandy Bridge architecture by Intel. These 2nd generation "i" series processors are built on the same 32nm die size as their antecedent Westmere, making the technology very familiar for AVADirect to easily integrate into their product lines. Some of the key features include Hyper-Threading, ensuring each core is used efficiently while utilizing multiple tasks at once, and Turbo Boost which will respectively overclock the processor when it is deemed necessary based on the current process.
What Sandy Bridge means to gaming desktops is more affordable configurations with increased performance, easily achievable overclock speeds, and improved physics performance. Custom non-gaming desktops provide more multi-tasking and efficiency than ever before and lower costs due to the integrated HD graphics, removing the need for dedicated graphics card to drive the display(s). Notebook end-users will enjoy improved battery life due to mobile Sandy Bridge processors lesser power consumption and heat. HTPC users can take advantage of the slim-streamed integrated HD graphics engine for viewing HD movies, digital TV, and streaming video making HTPCs built from Sandy Bridge the ideal solution for any media center requirements.
Sandy Bridge will keep the performance aspect at par with the rest of any configuration leaving all other components at question of upgrade after years of use. The profound methodology AVADirect maintains to incorporate previous CPU technology is well documented throughout the IT market. Sandy Bridge opens up the new plethora of directions the world-renowned manufacturer can take satisfying many vertical markets and PC extremists alike.
Misha Troshin, CMO and co-owner of AVADirect speaks on what Sandy Bridge will do for their product development. "We always knew the day would come when hybrid solutions were much more affordable within the boundaries of bleeding-edge performance. We offer products that catch the interest of any consumer: desktops, notebooks, workstations, servers, all-in-one and small form factors that already have numerous prestige characteristics that cannot be found anywhere else; Sandy Bridge is simply the "icing on the cake". You can expect us, as a major player in the computer business, and fellow enthusiast, to approach this current day and age with an aggressive appetite to constantly offer better and more exciting products. To be a true custom computer manufacturer means to expect technology to advance quickly and incorporate it into solutions all end-users can take advantage of. Since the company was founded, we have structured it to effectively accomplish just that." says Troshin
AVADirect will continuously update their website with new products featuring the Sandy Bridge architecture beyond what is currently listed. More importantly, their mission directly correlates to offering the most extensive configuration options while incorporating advanced technologies currently available. This philosophy is what sets them apart from competitors. AVADirect increasingly raises the bar for performance at an affordable price; thus making AVADirect solutions using Sandy Bridge a great match.
