RumorTT: Offical Kinect SDK for PC in the works from Microsoft
While all kinds of neat PC-born hacks for the Kinect are all over the place, Microsoft has kept fairly quiet on official PC support for the device with CEO Steve Ballmer only stating that PC compatibility will come "at the right time." Reports are now stirring that the time may be soon upon us as WinRumors is stating that Microsoft currently has a Kinect SDK and driver set in the works.

RumorTT: Offical Kinect SDK for PC in the works from Microsoft

The SDK, or software development kit, would give developers the tools they need to bring Kinect-based software to the PC platform. Details past this are pretty sketchy, with only a vague "in the coming months" as a possible release time and another rumbling of Kinect support in Windows 8. With the current popularity of the Kinect, as shown by Microsoft outselling their projected figures by 3 million units, it would make sense to strike while the iron is hot.

Nintendo 3DS gets U.S. launch date and price
The long awaited launch info for the Nintendo 3DS has finally been made official by Nintendo of America's COO and President Reggie Fils-Aime. At an event in New York, the handheld gaming console was announced to be hitting U.S. shores on March 27th at a price of $249.99.

Nintendo 3DS gets U.S. launch date and price

This is quite a chunk of change for the new glasses free 3D handheld gamer, only a mere $50 less than it costs to get into a PS3 and more than the entry level Xbox 360. Around 30 games are expected to be released before E3 in June, with seven titles officially slated for launch day. Nintendo DSi games will be compatible with the 3DS as well so you can play your older titles as well.

RumorTT: iPad 2 to include a proximity sensor?
The iPad 2 rumors are running rampant, and the latest to hit the waves is the possibility of a proximity sensor being included. Those who are poking around in the recently released developer version of the iOS 4.3 beta have found a string that allows for the iPad to be locked and unlocked when the cover on the iPad is opened and closed.

RumorTT: iPad 2 to include a proximity sensor?

The ambient light sensor of the current-gen iPad could possibly do this as well, but the functionality wouldn't be as simple to produce. This would be an interesting feature to include to help with battery life and such. Just one more piece of chum in the shark infested waters of the iPad 2 rumor mill.

Number porting coming to Google Voice
One of the few gripes that many otherwise happy Google Voice customers have had is that you have to get yourself a new phone number if you want to use it. This is old news now, as number porting has now been enabled for Google Voice to a limited number of users. If your number is portable, the service will cost you $20.

Number porting coming to Google Voice

The service doesn't come without a slew of warnings, though: early termination fees from your current cell provider could make this an expensive process. Android phones should play fairly nicely with this due to Google Voice's deep integration with Android, but this may be more of a decision for iPhone fans. But hey, cutting ties from your carrier may just be worth it as aside from some occasional downtime issues experienced a few months back, Google Voice's user experience has generally been a positive one.

AroundThe.Net launches - whips their hair back and forth
People of the world are you ready for a change? AroundThe.Net is a female driven website and video blog about all sorts of tech related content. The ladies started off as a blog post and have exploded into a full-blown website.

AroundThe.Net launches - whips their hair back and forth

And as all start-ups do, they start off with a bang with a interview done by porn star Raven Alexis who interviews Gigabyte's very own Colin. Now, I know that you're probably thinking "well, get to it, link us already" so here we go. TweakTown introduce, AroundThe.Net:
The idea of AroundThe.Net (ATN) was born from a blog post. Not an impressive blog post by any stretch of the imagination and indeed, it was its sheer banality which galvanized us to action.
One of the few high ranking female execs at a certain chip company had decided to blog about what she believed girls wanted from life, taking it upon herself to explain to the world that what women world over craved the most was the love of a geeky man. A geeky man with no dress sense, no social skills, but who could help us imbecile women fix a computer or mow the lawn.
For those of us "tech girls" who have been gainfully employed in the industry for years, this was a shocking blow and an affront not only to our (not-so-delicate) sensibilities but to our common sense. Why should a woman, a high ranking tech exec at that, presume to speak on behalf of all women or pretend we are all one homogeneously tech-retarded group of blathering bimbos. It's offensive.
Women, just like their male counterparts, fall into a vast variety of categories and - oddly enough - have very different opinions from one another on most things. Yes, even in tech. And no, we're not raging feminists, and we'd never dare to burn our expensive Victoria Secrets bras, thank you very much.
So, how best to showcase the fun, geeky, random side of the business we love than to take four of the most opinionated, passionate, intelligent, well spoken and socially adjusted (perhaps not!) girls in tech and put them together to make videos to entertain, engage or enrage you?
To battle it out with each other and our unsuspecting victims (guests) in a war of wits, to eloquently and elegantly go where no tech show has gone before: to a non cheesy, no nonsense tech show by women, but not for women. But not for men either. But for everyone. A show where pink gets checked at the door and where fluff has no place. A tasteful yet brash, belligerently funny, realistically refreshing approach to covering tech news and the digital toys we care about.
Think, G4TV meets Engadget meets Top Gear, meets TMZ, meets the View....on acid!
You can catch the girls - Sylvie Barak, Raven Alexis, Lydia Leavitt and Nicole Scott - from AroundThe.Net on their site or on their Facebook page, Twitter, YouTube or any number of other places Around the dot net...

THQ boss says next-gen consoles would be "horrible"
THQ boss Danny Bilson has come out swinging when talking about next-gen consoles, saying "It would be horrible," following this with "It still costs us a fortune to make games on this platform. If they're going to up the scale, up the art, up the content, I don't know how to make that and sell it to anybody for under $US100 a game."

THQ boss says next-gen consoles would be

But, in some countries games are already at or above $100 per game. Consoles used to have 4 - 6 year cycles where the next-gen would replace the previous generation and in todays world of mainstream gaming, you would've thought this would have happened by now?
"We're not going to get beat by another hardware upgrade like every five years like it was before," says Bilson. "It's up to us to compete in graphics and creativity. Sometimes I hope good creativity and style will be able to be more important. It is more important."
What were developers excuses 10 - 15 years ago when SNES games were $130 - $199? The scale, art and content has gotten much, much larger (100 - 1000X easily) yet, the cost of games has come down? We didn't hear about any billion dollar sales back in the days without Call of Duty, but now it seems every developer needs to sell 10 million copies or they go bust.

AMD release Catalyst 11.1a drivers
NVIDIA were up first yesterday and now AMD are serving up a new revision of drivers today in the form of Catalyst 11.1a hotfix. The drivers give speed increases for Radeon HD 6800 and 6900 series of GPU's.

AMD release Catalyst 11.1a drivers

The hotfix (as usual) is not officially supported, so install at your own risk. There will be an official Catalyst update on January 26th. Both series of GPU's will get a performance increase of roughly 7% in 3DMark Vantage, 3% increase in 3DMark 06, Call of Duty: Black Ops should get around 20% when playing with 4xMSAA and then pumps up to a 35% increase at 8xMSAA.
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena grabs an extra 20% while Unigine Heaven OpenGL performance improves 10%, 30% or 100% when running at moderate, normal and extreme tessellation levels.
AMD also says there are series-specific improvements, HD6800 series should get a 9% increase in Aliens vs. Predator when running 2xMSAA with an increase of 20% if you're using 4xMSAA. Metro 2033 enjoys a nice 28% increase at 4xMSAA, Batman Arkham Asylum and Crysis Warhead should get a ~4% boost. Battleforge's DirectX 11 performance should increase 6% for HD6900 series owners.
Speed gains aside, AMD has added prototype tessellation controls to the Catalyst Control Center. "Our goal is to give users full control over the tessellation levels used in applications," the company said. "The default selection "AMD Optimized" setting allows AMD, on a per application basis, to set the best level of tessellation. No applications have been profiled yet, so this feature is currently non-operational.

GeoHot to pimp out Windows Phone 7?
GeoHot is getting around lately, not only has he helped in the cracking of the iPhone but he released the PlayStation 3 root key and custom firmware. He has been pretty mad at both Apple and Sony about their stances on jailbreaking, but has said on his website he likes Microsoft's approach to homebrew and wants to try Windows Phone 7.

GeoHot to pimp out Windows Phone 7?

GeoHot said "perhaps a more appropriate way to deal with jailbreakers, I'm going out to buy a Windows 7 phone". After hearing GeoHot say this, Brandon Watson, Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7 posted the following on his Twitter account: "#geohot if you want to build cool stuff on #wp7, send me email and the team will give you a phone - let dev creativity flourish #wp7dev."
GeoHot could be just the thing Microsoft need to really push them up the mountain of mobile phone glory against Apple and Google. With a much more easy going attitude Microsoft could really swing things around from here on out.

Verizon offers some customers $200 to upgrade to iPhone 4
I would bet that with the holidays just getting over that there are bunches of folks out there that took advantage of deals at Verizon and upgraded to a new smartphone over the holidays. The problem is with the new iPhone 4 heading to Verizon you might be having some serious buyer's remorse right now and wishing you waited for the iPhone. If you are one of these remorseful buyers, Verizon has a deal that might be perfect for you.

Verizon offers some customers $200 to upgrade to iPhone 4

Verizon Wireless has announced that any customer that bought a new smartphone, feature phone, or refurbished phone between 11/26/2010 and 01/10/2011 are eligible to get a special deal good for $200 off the purchase price of the iPhone 4 at full retail. There are a few points you need to be aware of though.
To take advantage of the deal you have to give back your current phone. That's not such a sticking point for most users. The real catch is that you will have to pay full retail price for the iPhone and then Verizon will send you back a $200 Visa gift card. That phone will not be cheap at full sticker price. It would be a better deal if they just offered the upgrade up front at $200 off MSRP.

Sony picks Opera browser for LCD TVs and Blu-ray players
The market for connected TVs and other devices like game consoles, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players is booming. The ability to surf the web and stream content online from connected home theater gear is become common on many high-end and mid-range offerings. Not all of the devices will let the user actually explore the full internet though. Sony has announced that it has chosen Opera as the browser for its LCD TVs and connected Blu-ray players.

Sony picks Opera browser for LCD TVs and Blu-ray players

The browser for the Sony hardware uses the Opera Devices Software Development kit as a framework for web-standards based solutions and web surfing on the connected devices. The browser will be able to deliver web apps, widgets, full web browsing, and supports standards like HTML5, HbbTV, and OIPF.
With the addition of the browser to the Sony TVs and Blu-ray players users will need one less device to access the web when watching TV on a big screen. Opera offers no exact date on when we will see the browser surface on Sony hardware.
"The Web as we know it is evolving, and we are committed to making it more accessible across diverse devices," said Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer, Opera Software. "Our ability to address key hybrid broadcast-broadband initiatives in numerous markets makes us a natural fit with Sony. By delivering both a global viewpoint and the necessary technology, we are able to stay on the cutting edge of the industry."

GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6950 2GB Video Card Overclocked
Introduction

GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6950 2GB Video Card Overclocked

I'm feeling a little bad at the moment. I've had the GIGABYTE HD 6950 2GB for a while now, but because we had already looked at the model in single and Crossfire form, I figured I would use this card to do an overclocking article.
Instead of just doing a standard OC article with no voltage adjustment and then doing another one later, I figured I'd just wait 'till we had Voltage adjustment on the HD 6900 series. Unfortunately that took a little longer than normal.
Still, the good news is we've got it now and we can really put the GIGABYTE HD 6950 2GB through its paces. Of course, we haven't looked at the GIGABYTE version of the HD 6950 either, so we'll check out the package first and then have a closer look at the card itself before looking at the specifications, and more importantly the overclock we managed to achieve.

The Package

The overall design of the box doesn't hold any real surprises, but it's nice to go back to the more traditional box shape. Inside there's not much going on with the manual, driver CD, Crossfire cable and two dual Molex to 6-Pin PCI-E power connectors.

Seagate Constellation.2 1TB 2.5-inch SATA Hard Drive

Seagate Constellation.2 1TB 2.5-inch SATA Hard Drive

Introduction
When it comes to traditional platter drives, the most innovative company on the block is Seagate. Seagate has many firsts under their belt, more than what I could possibly go into in an article about a single drive. Adding to the long string of innovative products is the new Seagate Constellation.2 Series of products.
With a maximum capacity of 1TB and a small 2.5" form factor, the Constellation.2 is already breaking new ground. On top of that, Seagate wasn't content with just a SATA or SAS interface, the Constellation.2 is available in both SATA 6G and SAS 6G. As you might have guessed, the new 2.5" Constellation.2 is a nearline enterprise drive, but unlike the norm in this field the new SATA and SAS Constellation.2 is optimized to be power efficient, using only 3.9 watts at idle.
Before I get too far ahead of myself, let's take a look at the Seagate Constellation.2's specifications and then get to the looking at the performance numbers of the SATA 6G version.

Synology® Unveils DiskStation Manager 3.1 Beta
Synology® Unveils DiskStation Manager 3.1 Beta
Advanced NAS Server OS brings versatile features and is available for free download
Taipei, Taiwan—January 20, 2011—Synology® Inc. today announced the beginning of DiskStation Manager 3.1 (DSM 3.1) beta program. This new NAS server OS brings a collection of new features that boost:
• Management efficiency with multiple volumes on a single RAID, sharing of print/fax/scan on multifunction printers, and enhanced Synology File Browser
• Data availability with shared folder synchronization and dual disks redundancy
• Mobile devices enrichment with AirPrint® support and native apps for iPad®
• Multimedia enjoyment with advanced Download, Audio, and Photo Station
• Surveillance solution with smart search and video analysis in Surveillance Station

Synology® Unveils DiskStation Manager 3.1 Beta

"We recognize the ever increasing volume of digital assets is challenging enterprises. IT managers are struggling to feed the expanding capacity and manage enormous storage pools," said Rosiel Lee, product manager of Synology Inc. "The new Storage Manager precludes the challenges with the flexibility of creating multiple volumes on a single RAID. IT managers can now expand volume size dynamically and set a shared folder's quota by leveraging this unique technology."
DSM 3.1 evaluates the efficiency of various operations. Synology DiskStation is the very first to support the sharing of print, fax and scan on a multifunction printer. Multiple administrators can now log on the same Synology DiskStation. In addition, File Browser supports preview of photos, videos, PDF, and Office documents, along with various searching criteria, making searches more precise and quickly. Getting the results has become timelier by performing database index to file names.
Enterprises call for data availability and reliability. The DSM 3.1 provides a workaround by allowing users to schedule synchronization of specific shared folders from one Synology DiskStation to another, providing an immediate recovery solution and allowing documents to be shared seamlessly. In addition, the Synology Hybrid RAID technology now supports two disks fault tolerance. Furthermore, users can choose multiple destinations in network backup for stacked layers of protection while the Windows ACL support allows data to be restored along with its complex access permission settings.
Synology is gearing up to meet the ever increasing demand for mobile device support. The industry's first AirPrint support allows users wirelessly print documents from iPhone and iPad to any AirPrint-enabled printer connected to DiskStation. Additionally, the iPad-native DS photo+ and DS audio applications are now available. Their tailor-made UIs bring intuitive hands-on experience. By shaking iPad gently, the playing song will immediately jump to the next. Furthermore, the new DS file application allows the users of iPhone download and upload documents from and to Synology NAS server.
The DSM 3.1 extends users' multimedia experience by offering several overhauled applications. The Download Station automates every process, from searching downloadable files on the Internet to aggregating the latest available torrent through the RSS feeds. The Audio Station 3 features an equalizer to facilitate hearing sensation, a mini player to contribute to multitasking, personal playlists and editable ID3 Tags. The Personalized Photo Station allows every account user to host his or her own photo album and blog. Users can easily share the link of a photo album on facebook, twitter, and Plurk™.
Surveillance Station 5 now runs on Internet Explorer®, Firefox®, and Chrome®, and allows users to detect any motions, missing and foreign objects, camera occlusion and focus lost, and adjust image quality for detailed viewing. The Mail Station 2 supports multiple email domain fetching and multiple SMTP servers to offer centralized management of all emails and protect users' privacy. Additionally, selected Synology DiskStations are VMware® vSphere™and Citrix® XenServer™certified, and compatible with Microsoft Hyper-V™, providing a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers.

2010: Mobile shopping on the rise
2010: Mobile shopping on the rise
Oslo, Norway - January 20, 2011
With all the world's e-commerce in their hands, mobile shoppers truly know how to use it from their phones.
According to Opera's State of the Mobile Web Report, there was a clear increase in the number of visits to Amazon.com towards the end of the year, compared to earlier in 2010.
The countries showing the clearest trend among the Opera Mini users were United States and Germany. Shoppers in these countries doubled their number of page views to Amazon.com towards the end of the year, as compared to the start of 2010. This Christmas was truly the season of the mobile shopper.
The sharp increase of shopping over the last year increased even more at the end of the year, towards the traditional holiday shopping frenzy. This is especially visible in the daily number of visits to Amazon.com during the U.S. shopping weekend starting with "Black Friday" and ending with "Cyber Monday". In both monthly and daily numbers, the increase is significant and shows the willingness to shop and browse online stores even on the go.

2010: Mobile shopping on the rise

What we say: "It is not hard to imagine the benefits of the full Web right at your fingertips when shopping in a crowded store," said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software "'Is this TV on sale really a good offer, or can I get a better deal online? What are people saying on the Web about the advantages of this computer model compared to the more expensive one?' Full access to the Web via Opera Mini--even under difficult conditions such as crowded cellular networks--puts power back in the hands of the consumers."
Global trends:
-In December 2010, Opera Mini had over 85.5 million users, a 6.8% increase from November 2010. Since December 2009, the number of unique users has increased 84.7%.
-Opera Mini users viewed over 46.7 billion pages in December 2010. Since November, page views have gone up 4.6%.
-Since December 2009, page views have increased 125.5%. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed over 6.5 petabytes of data in December.
