AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile form Isis joint venture
When it comes to the mobile industry the major players like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are at each other's throats in a fight for subscribers and dominance in the market. The three have managed to find common ground in the potential to make huge sums of money by revamping the way consumers pay for goods and services at the register. The joint venture is called Isis.
The goal of Isis will be to work with the Discover Financial Services payment network to allow consumers to pay for products using their mobile devices and NFC tech inside the handsets. The user would present the mobile device at checkout rather than cash or credit card to pay. Isis plans to roll its tech out to select markets in the next 18 months. The tech uses "strong" encryption and privacy protection according to Isis.
The first card issuer to use the Isis system will be Barclaycard US. The CEO of Isis is Michael Abbott who was with GE Capital before, said, "Our mobile commerce network, through relationships with merchants, will provide an enhanced, more convenient, more personalized shopping experience for consumers," said Michael Abbott, Chief Executive Officer of Isis. "While mobile payments will be at the core of our offering, it is only the start. We plan to create a mobile wallet that ultimately eliminates the need for consumers to carry cash, credit and debit cards, reward cards, coupons, tickets and transit passes."

Samsung to support Google TV
Google TV is cool and when it was first announced I was really looking forward to getting it on my set with the Logitech Revue box so I could watching Hulu and online shows from networks. After the device launched, all of the major networks and Hulu blocked users of Google TV from being able to access any of their online content making the Google TV service much less appealing. At launch, the only TVs to support Google TV were from Sony.
Sometime next year that will change. Samsung will be making an announcement in January that it will support Google TV. The specifics of their plans are unknown, but with January being CES time, we will most likely hear then what will happen with Samsung and Google TV. I would be surprised if there arenÂ’t some Samsung TVs supporting the service on hand at CES.
Samsung says that it is open to using Intel chips inside the sets. I am sure Intel will land the deal. Google TV and online access on TVs is the way many TV makers are combating falling prices in the market and trying to woo users to their sets. Price competition in the market is very competitive with many consumers viewing TVs as a commodity and buying on price more than brand. If Google TV is blocked by more major services, it will be useless to many.

The holiday season is upon us for sure and shopping for gifts is at the top of to-do lists for tons of people all around the world. Odds are you have a gadget hound on your list that would love a new eReader like the Nook color. Barnes & Noble has announced that it is now starting to ship the Nook color eReader, which is the latest in the Nook line up. If you have already pre-ordered the device, and put in your order early, you may be one of the select groups that get the new reader first.
Barnes & Noble states that the Nook color will start arriving at the door of those that pre-ordered today and will continue to ship throughout the week to pre-order customers. The pre-orders are being filled for those that ordered online and those that ordered in stores as well. B&N says that a "very limited" number of the Nook color devices will land in Barnes & Noble stores, Walmart, and Books-A-Million stores this week as well.
If you didnÂ’t pre-order and really want one of these things, you had better start looking at these stores daily. I suspect this will be one of the more popular eReaders this Christmas. The Nook color has a 7-inch VividView color touchscreen and delivers books, magazines and more content to readers. If you order the reader online today, you can expect to receiver your device around November 26. However, B&N says it will "adjust" that date as needed due to demand. That means there is no way of knowing exactly when the device will turn up for buyers. The Nook color sells for $249.

Android Gingerbread to support Near Field Communication
Google CEO Eric Schmidt has teased the world with an unreleased Android Phone and showed off a cool new feature - Near Field Communication.
If you have not heard of this before, it does sound a bit weird - but, new Android fans will have a chip inside of them which will allow you to tap your phone against special sensors to complete a specific action.
This may sound weird - but it has plenty of applications for use, such as credit cards. You'll be able to simply tap your phone against a sensor - finalizing the transaction. Tap your phone against a location-aware sensor and it will check you into whatever venue you're standing in - without having to open up an App on your phone.
It's rumored that the next-gen iPhone will have this feature... I wonder if that'll also be a day we'll never forget, until then Google has it's day in the sun.

Latest PS3 firmware hacked by PSJailbreak
We all knew it was a matter of time before the latest update to the Playstation 3 firmware fell to the hacking community. The modders at PSJailbreak claim to have a break for the latest 3.50 firmware for the PS3 and are also claiming it will be good for any future versions as well.
The jailbreak is USB drive based and allows unapproved software, games, and even Linux installs on your PS3. PSJailbreak is also opening a sister site that will allow firmware downgrades for the PS3 at PSDowngrade.com. WeÂ’ll see if their claims of future firmware breaking are true, but for now modders have a fun new toy for their kit.

Apple says "tomorrow is just another day, that you'll never forget"
With news circling of an event from Apple's iTunes - the marketing machine that is Apple has gone into overdrive.
Talking up big and not delivering is much easier than talking up big and actually delivering something that has people talking - after all, saying it's a day you'll never forget is pretty big, but it IS Apple we're talking about.
Could it be the cloud-based service we've been waiting for?
Could it be an iOS world without syncing to the bloated iTunes software?
Could it be the lacklustre addition of the Beatles catalogue?
Whatever it is - Apple have promised us we'll never forget it.

Asus Sandy Bridge motherboard line up
This is the working of Intel's "tick, tock" method - the Sandy Bridge being the "tock" and bringing a 32nm fabrication process. Arriving on the same train will be the 6-series core-logic chipsets. These new chipsets will be on a slew of updated LGA1155 socket motherboards.
Sandy Bridge's arrival is quite close - so motherboard makers are tent-poling to show their line ups. Today, we have the Asus 6-series motherboards to have a quick look through. As with other quite long articles, I'll post a quick speel and the pictures for you to tent-pole over yourself, there's a few surprises throughout!
First up, I will note Asus are readying 17... yes, seventeen! different 6-series motherboards for Sandy Bridge. But, even that number is lower than Intel's last CPU platform launch. 10 will be based on P67 - which won't use Sandy Bridges integrated graphics, 6 boards will use the graphics ready H67 chipset while the final board is looking to incorporate the business-focused twin Q67 chipset.
The first board to look at is the Maximus IV Extreme, the top end LGA1155 Republic of Gamers (ROG) board. Along with other goodies, it comes with a new temperature sensor tucked int
In addition to lavishing users with overclocking extras, this ROG board taps the Gigabit Ethernet networking Intel builds into its core-logic chipsets. Most motherboard makers ignore this "free" GigE controller in favor of standalone Realtek chips, which we've long suspected are cheaper to implement. Asus confirmed that to be true, but it's nonetheless committed to using Intel networking solutions on more of its motherboards.o the CPU socket. This sensor measures CPU pin temps - which is not available on any other board.
Secondly, we have an absolutely amazing looking board - which is being touted as a "TUF" line. Enter, Sabertooth P67:
It is supposedly catered to those who want higher reliability. The Sabertooth P67 includes five-year warranty and "military-grade" electrical components. According to Asus these higher end components help TUF boards survive rigorous "server grade" testing. These tests involve higher temperature and humidity levels than are used to stress Asus' standard fare, and they also include sub-zero scenarios that aren't applied to other boards. On top of that, TUF boards are put through a "thermal shock" test that oscillates the temperature between extremes of -40 and 85°C.
In keeping with the military theme, Asus drapes the Sabertooth P67 with a layer of bulletproof Kevlar dubbed the Tactical Jacket. While not actually consisting of kevlar, it is not just for looks... The Tactical Jacket is a plastic piece designed to direct airflow over various onboard components. Beneath its flat exterior lies a network of channels that pipes airflow generated by a CPU cooler to auxiliary peripheral chips that would otherwise have to rely on ambient convection.
Now that we have the special boards out of the way, a quick look at the other offerings.
There will be eight different P8P67 boards released - including Deluxe models, microATX and even workstation-oriented WS models. USB3.0 is on all boards, some feature four SuperSpeed ports, which the P8P67 Deluxe shows in the below picture:
Here we have a shot of the P8P67 Pro:
And lastly, we have a shot of the P8P67-I - it's the microATX offering, which may look small but includes a tonne and a half of features. PCI Express x16 slot? Check. USB 3.0, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity? Check. 6Gbps SATA ports and dual digital video outputs? Check. Heck, the board even has a PS/2 port, eSATA, and a digital S/PDIF audio out. The only compromise seems to be the use of laptop-style SO-DIMM slots, a necessary evil to save board real estate for all those integrated peripherals.

Facebook introducing new messaging service
Mark Zuckerberg calls the new messaging system a "modern messaging system" - I call it "about damn time".
Mark says it's not a new email system, email is "too formal" - the new system is designed to be seamless, simple and short when compared to email. Mark adds "We think we should take features away from messaging -- it should be simple."
The new Facebook messaging system will handle email and users can have an @facebook.com email address - it also integrates SMS, IM and Facebook messages. All flavors of communication roll into one including history between them all into threads.
Facebook is also introducing something it calls "social inbox" - it uses your Facebook contact list to automatically built whitelists for important messages. At the moment, there's no IMAP support - but it's coming. The new messaging system will be rolled out slowly over the next few months.

Xigmatek Aegir SD128264 Double Layer HDT CPU Cooler
Introduction
Looking back through my past reviews, I came to realize that it has been almost a year since I have seen anything from Xigmatek. Somehow I missed out on the release of the Utgard, and before that, we last looked at the Bifrost VGA cooler, and the Balder CPU cooler just before that. So what has Xigmatek been up to these days? The simple answer is expansion. Not only has Xigmatek made it to the US and opened a New York office to better supply the needs of the US market, during all of that stress, behind the scenes they were developing new toys for me to look at. Along with a surprise or two coming down the line from Xigmatek, they have released a new CPU cooler for us to have a look at.
As the title leads, Xigmatek is keeping with the naming scheme that we are getting used to, and this new cooler also takes a mythological Norse Gods namesake. Doing a bit of digging on the name I found that Aegir refers to the god of the sea and all its creatures. For those not too hip to Norse legend, it echoes to legends of Poseidon from Greek lore. Either way, I get the reference to bring in the power of the vast oceans and seas to try to tame the latest processors. If history isnÂ’t your thing, donÂ’t worry; let me break the cooler down a bit to help explain what it is all about.
The Aegir SD128264 dual layer HDT cooler takes a few attributes from the mighty ThorÂ’s Hammer we tested last year after CES. Most obvious is the dual layer HDT. As the SD128264 name denotes, this is a 12cm CPU cooler with two 8mm diameter heatpipes, and four 6mm heat pipes. The base uses two of each 6mm and 8mm pipes to make HDT contact to the CPU. Then backing those up in a second, top layer is another pair of 6mm pipes to help remove the heat. That is where the similarities stop for the Aegir. The rest of the cooler has a design more reminiscent of the Balder crossed with a standard SD1283 cooler. I say we run through the specifications and get a good look at the Aegir and see if the Norse God has what it takes to stand up against the mighty fierce heat of todayÂ’s processors.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 TOXIC Video Card
Introduction
WeÂ’ve already seen HIS bring us the HD 6870 Turbo which was quite fast, so it comes as no surprise that Sapphire has come out with a TOXIC version of the HD 6850. Considering AMD left it up to the AIB to handle the HD 6850, it really doesnÂ’t come as a surprise since theyÂ’ve probably been working on the model for a while.
So whatÂ’s the TOXIC have in store for us? Well, usually itÂ’s an upgraded cooler along with a bump in clocks. The questions we have to ask ourselves is how the new cooler goes and whether or not the clocks are something that we should be getting a little excited about.
The HD 6800 series is looking the goods at the moment and it seems with the slight delay in the HD 6900 series till December, companies are going to have a little more time than they actually thought with the HD 6800 series for the aforementioned reason.
We all know about the HD 6800 series at this stage, so thereÂ’s not point getting into it much more; instead letÂ’s see the package that Sapphire is giving us with its new TOXIC variant of the HD 6850.
The Package
Sapphire got us this product nice and early and after they had the boxes done they decided to change the packing and bring the model into the TOXIC series. While the box and the card artwork might change a little, the box content wonÂ’t. Speaking of which, weÂ’ve got a few things with the more stand out options being a mini DP to DP convertor along with a HDMI cable.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Xbox 360 Review
With 5.6 million copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops sold within 24 hours of its launch, you have to think that most people had already made up their mind about the game and whether or not they were going to buy it. The seventh instalment of the popular franchise sees Treyarch in the development chair again who no doubt hope to bring us the best Call of Duty yet.
From the moment you start you find yourself literally and figuratively strapped into a chair as youÂ’re being interrogated by an unknown source about a number of missions that have been done over the years.
The main story consists of you taking control of a few characters during a number of flashbacks based around 1961 to 1968 during the Cold War. As you find yourself being interrogated by a mystery man, the answer to his questions come from previous missions that you flashback to and complete.
During the flashbacks youÂ’ll hear the voice of the mystery man asking questions and youÂ’ll hear Alex Mason, the man strapped to the chair and a Special Forces Operative who you will be playing at times answer the questions as you go along. You really get this feeling of two levels happening and it adds something new to the mix with you playing almost two stories; the one based in 1968 with Alex Mason in the chair being interrogated and the other completing missions over the Cold War period.
From the moment you start itÂ’s all action; the gun fire is fast and furious, the explosions are plenty and the desire to hunt down the enemy is there from the second you get into the first mission.
Throughout the game youÂ’re going to see familiar names and faces like Fidel Castro and John F. Kennedy, while seeing others like Viktor Reznov who was seen in Call of Duty: World at War.
The story is very strong, if not the strongest of the franchise to date which is made only better with some fantastic voice acting and motion capture. And while you feel the game is sometimes turned up to 11 when it comes to the ‘in your face’ action, it’s not at the point where you should find yourself having any issue with it.
Outside of the normal running youÂ’ll find yourself in the odd vehicle here and there which accelerates the game to an even higher pace. With that said, on a whole it adds little to the game and the vehicle mechanics at times when youÂ’re driving are quite poor.
You would feel that slow down and frame drops would be an issue, but the game ran very smooth with no noticeable issues that caused the game to be harder due to dropped frames........ Read the full content here in your browser!

Drobo Introduces Expandable USB 3.0 System and Easiest-to-Use Remote Backup Solution
Drobo Introduces Expandable USB 3.0 System and Easiest-to-Use Remote Backup Solution
Data Robotics, Inc. ("Drobo"), the company that delivers the best storage experience ever, today announced a major new product and breakthrough data protection capabilities. These announcements come on the heels of record sales of the Drobo product family to small and medium-sized organizations worldwide.
"Today's announcements will serve to further accelerate what our customers and partners fondly call the 'Drobo invasion,'" said Tom Buiocchi, chief executive officer, Drobo. "Our quest to provide the best storage experience for small and medium-sized organizations just progressed significantly with today's new product advancements."
Drobo has unveiled its new Drobo S system to provide a number of industry firsts and breakthroughs by leveraging USB 3.0 technology. The company is also announcing the immediate availability of Drobo Sync, the world's easiest-to-use remote backup for small and medium-sized businesses, which is available with the company's new DroboPro FS system. All Drobo systems feature patented BeyondRAID technology, which enables greater ease-of-use, data safety, affordability, and expandability for organizations who rely on digital storage but who do not have deep storage expertise.
Breakthrough Features and Benefits Delivered by New Drobo S
• The Drobo S is currently the most expandable USB 3.0 product in the market, with "industry first" support for multiple storage volumes and capacity of up to 32TB and beyond
• The accelerated performance of the Drobo S is up to 10X faster than existing USB 2.0 solutions
• The new Drobo S also features enhanced backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 systems (laptops, PCs and servers) to provide further investment protection and "future-proofing"
"When USB 3.0 was released, many storage vendors simply added a basic connector to their systems, but that precluded small and medium-sized businesses from taking full advantage of its promise," said Mark Peters, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "In contrast, by specifically engineering the Drobo S to incorporate USB 3.0, Data Robotics has been able to optimize performance and ease-of-use, both of which being characteristics that such businesses will appreciate."

Intel Teams Up with Leading Researchers to Make Football Helmets Safer
Intel Teams Up with Leading Researchers to Make Football Helmets Safer
HIGHLIGHTS
- Intel collaborated with several industry experts to improve football helmet safety by using Intel technology-based supercomputers and workstations to simulate a human brainÂ’s reaction to collisions.
- Intel worked with Mayo Clinic on faster diagnostics of medical scans using upcoming supercomputing chip design called “Intel MIC” (“Mike”) so players spend less time on the bench and more time on the field.
- Future technologies could include helmets with built-in Intel® Atom™ chips that measure and feed real-time data to medical personnel
NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 15, 2010 – Intel Corporation today announced that it is collaborating with industry experts and several universities to tackle the issue of football-related head injuries.
Using supercomputers and workstations based on present and future Intel processor technology, researchers are simulating collisions to study the impact on the brain, and use that information to design new football helmets that reduce the risk of short- and long-term injuries.
Kirk Skaugen, Intel vice-president and general manager of the Data Center Group poses with a New Orleans Saints football helmet.
Intel, working with Riddell, the premier designer and developer of helmets and protective equipment, and researchers from the Thayer School of Engineering (Dartmouth), Wayne State University, University of Northern Colorado and Texas State University-San Marcos, demonstrated simulations during an event at the SC10 conference in New Orleans.
In this demonstration, simulated impacts are processed on Intel® Xeon® Processor-based Workstations and Clusters, or a group of linked computers, to rapidly compute, visualize and assess the risk of injury in an impact event. The simulations are based on computer models from partner universities, some of which include actual data from on-field impacts using the Riddell HITS (Head Impact Telemetry System), a proprietary in-helmet technology that provides real-time data regarding head impacts. These models show visualization of the stresses on the brain and can allow for comparisons between impacts that are found to result in a concussion and similar impacts that cause no injury.
"Computer simulations have been instrumental in designing improved brain injury criteria,” said Dr. Igor Szczyrba with the University of Northern Colorado. “In the near future, they can also help doctors diagnose actual brain injuries.”
Separately, attending the event and discussing the importance of using safe equipment to prevent injuries, was Drew Brees, quarterback of the New Orleans Saints and Super Bowl XLIV MVP.
While no equipment can prevent 100 percent of injuries, Intel is also working with Mayo Clinic to accelerate the ability to process medical scans. In this application, cranial scans running on Intel® Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture co-processors were accelerated by up to 18 times.
During the event, Intel also discussed future technologies, based on its Intel® Atom™ processors, which could be embedded in helmets and wirelessly feed data into servers and cloud networks that measure injury risk and impact in real-time. When combined with impact simulation, this could better safeguard players by identifying potential injuries quickly so that medical personnel can respond faster and have information as soon as they reach the player on the field.
Intel, with its top-ranked Intel® Xeon® chip-based supercomputers, has been a leader in using parallel processing to solve complex problems. Some of this urgent and groundbreaking research is made possible by Intel® MIC architecture, which could run up to trillions of calculations per second, and includes in its targets high-performance computing segments such as scientific research, exploration and climate modeling. The first Intel MIC product, codenamed “Knights Corner,” will be made on Intel’s 22-nanometer (nm) manufacturing process – transistor structures packed as small as 22 billionths of a meter -- and will use Moore’s Law to scale tens of Intel processing cores on a single chip. While the vast majority of workloads will still run best on award-winning Intel Xeon processors, Intel MIC architecture will add more business opportunities for highly parallel applications.

Kinect for Xbox 360 Hits Million Mark in Just 10 Days
Kinect for Xbox 360 Hits Million Mark in Just 10 Days
Early customer demand for controller-free entertainment solidifies biggest year in Xbox history.
REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 15, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it has sold 1 million Kinect for Xbox 360 units worldwide in 10 days and is on pace to hit 5 million by the end of the year. The announcement comes a week before the biggest selling day of the year, Black Friday, and in the wake of increasing momentum for Xbox 360, which led U.S. video game console sales for the past four months.1
“We are appreciative of the response we have seen from consumers that has culminated in sales of more than 1 million units in the first 10 days on the market for Kinect for Xbox 360,” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “This is a great start to the holiday season, and we will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5 million Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year.”
Before the Kinect launch, Microsoft raised its worldwide sales forecast from 3 million to 5 million sensors sold by year-end. Kinect launched in North America on Nov. 4, followed by Europe on Nov. 10, and will land next in Asia (Nov. 18) and Japan (Nov. 20). By this holiday, controller-free games and entertainment will reach more than 60,000 retailers in 38 countries with up to 17 Kinect games available.

Three of the World's Top Five Supercomputers Powered by NVIDIA Tesla GPUs
Three of the World's Top Five Supercomputers Powered by NVIDIA Tesla GPUs
GPU Supercomputers Make Their Mark in Supercomputer World Rankings
NEW ORLEANS, LA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/15/2010 -- SC10 -- The November 2010 list of the "Top500" fastest supercomputers in the world was released today on www.top500.org and it revealed that NVIDIA® Tesla™ GPUs are now powering three of the top five systems.
Tesla GPUs were featured in the number one, three and four slots with the recently announced Tianhe-1A system taking the top spot with a performance record of 2.507 petaflops. The five highest-ranked systems were as follows (GPU-enabled systems in green):
The top three GPU supercomputers deliver more performance than the rest of the Top 10 systems combined. The most notable new entry to the Top500 is Tsubame 2.0, the new supercomputer from Tokyo Institute of Technology. The system delivers petaflop-class performance while remaining extremely efficient, consuming just 1.340 megawatts, dramatically less power than any other system on the top five.
"Tsubame 2.0 is an impressive achievement, balancing performance and power to deliver the most energy efficient petaflop-class supercomputer ever built," said Bill Dally, chief scientist at NVIDIA. "The path to exascale computing will be forged by groundbreaking systems like Tsubame 2.0."
GPUs have quickly become the enabling technology behind the world's top supercomputers. They contain hundreds of parallel processor cores capable of dividing up large computational workloads and processing them simultaneously, significantly increasing system performance. Heterogeneous systems, built with GPUs and CPUs, require less space and consume less power, making supercomputing more affordable and more accessible than ever before.
Dally is the Plenary speaker at this week's SC'10 supercomputing conference in New Orleans and will present on Wednesday, Nov. 17 on the subject of "GPU Computing: To Exascale and Beyond." For more information on NVIDIA Tesla high performance GPU computing products, go here.
